Advantages: smells lovely, leaves skin feeling gorgeous
Disadvantages: didn't get much lather from it, doesn't look very interesting
I was trying to make room in my freezer for my shopping the other day, when lurking beneath the frozen peas, I found a box of this, Lush's Skinny Dip Butter Cream! I bought it ages ago, and as I had a lot of other shower gels on the go at the time, I put this in the freezer to keep it fresh and then forgot it was there. As I'm trying to use all my products up before buying any more, it was nice to have something 'new' to use, so I promptly defrosted this for use in the bath later that night!
So what is a butter cream anyway? Well it's basically like a soap, but Lush use 20% soap and 80% 'butters, oils and infusions' to make it really moisturising and luxurious.
I had actually used this product once before - a good few years ago now - and loved the scent, but remember my boyfriend at the time hated it. Even Lush admit on their website it's not to everyone's tastes. I have also used Lush's Lemslip butter cream, so I had a fair idea of what to expect from the product.
The butter cream is sliced from a large block in store, and my piece came packaged in a small cardboard box with a clear window on the side. The actual product is a creamy/off-white colour and to be honest, it looks a bit like a slice of cheese! On the photo above, it has a layer of coconut over the top, but it's unlikely that the slice you receive will have this layer - I know mine didn't. Like I said, I put mine in the freezer, but you don't have to do that, I only did so to keep it fresh, keeping it at room temperature won't do it any harm.
Usually the butter creams have a very soft and slimy sort of texture, however I found that this was a little solider, but perhaps that is because I'd had it in the freezer so long - I don't really think you're supposed to keep it in there for months on end!
Even so, the butter cream had a malleable texture, and you could easily tear a piece off to wash with. Like many Lush products there was very little lather with this, but still it felt like it was getting my skin nice and clean.
I mentioned the love/hate smell before, so I suppose I had better describe it. The butter cream contains creamed coconut infusion, aloe vera gel, almond oil, cocoa butter, clove bud oil, cedar wood oil, clary sage oil, ylang ylang oil, vetivert oil and palmarosa oil amongst other things. To me, the main scent of the finished product is the clove, with perhaps a hint of the cedar wood and clary sage coming through. It's quite a herbal, woody scent, and fairly strong too, so I could understand that not everyone would like it, but I really do, it's a real 'Lush' scent, the sort of scent you would struggle to find elsewhere.
After using the butter cream, I find that it leaves my skin feeling very soft and smooth, and its also quite moisturising, so all those luxury butters are obviously doing their job well. The scent of the product does linger on the skin, however I can only smell it close up, it's not the sort of scent I notice on me after I get out of the bath unless, I actually put my arm to my nose.
A 100g slice of this butter cream costs just £2.10, making it one of Lush's cheapest products. Buy from Lush stores or online at www.lush.co.uk
So in conclusion, I think this is a great product. I love the smell, the way it makes my skin feel, and the unusual texture. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it!
Summary: Go for a skinny dip!

- 13/04/09 I love the buttercreams but I must say I don't like the smell of Skinny Dip. To me it smells of a wierd mix of cloves and violets. |
