Advantages: Smells wonderful, sends you off into a sleep, lasts for a long time

Disadvantages: Some mght say the price

Does anyone like me suffer from bouts of insomnia where no matter how tired you are or how late you go to bed to try and tire yourself out, you end up waking up at the crack of dawn feeling awful with a fuzzy head unable to sleep?

Having a stressful job means you can pretty much guarantee that when I come home from work I often find it hard to wind down and relax, even alcohol is often a waste of time. However, the one thing that does relax me is being massaged, it does help of course if you have a stunningly gorgeous partner to massage you (like I have) and help you to relax and unwind.

Okay so I am a huge fan of Lush, everyone knows it and I cant help it, having extremely sensitive skin that for years has been exposed to hypoallergenic products only, having a little whiff of something slightly fragrant that isn’t going to bring me out in a rash is exciting, well for me it is anyway and I adore the massage bars, every time there is a new one, I go and buy it to try it out and this one couldn’t be more apt if it tried.

Let me introduce ‘Sleepy Head’… and Lush sell it with the following statement “Being tired and unable to sleep is a horrid feeling. Tired, sleepless and knowing that tomorrow you’re going to have to stay awake all day at work is even worse. The frustration at not sleeping keeps you awake too.” Yes that’s me and guess what… I bought it.

So the aptly named ‘Sleepy Head’ massage bar retails at £4.50 for a 90 gram bar, again it is slightly more expensive than some of the other products in this range but it was new, it smelt nice and if it helped me sleep I wanted to try it. Prices do vary for each massage bar depending on which ingredients are used to make it but on the plus side they do last a very long time, so for me they are definitely worth their money. As always the Massage bar comes wrapped within a clear cellophane wrapper clearly displaying the Lush logo to keep it in one piece.

The Sleepy Head massage bar to me looks like an ordinary piece of nice soap (see picture) which could be sat on any bathroom shelf and for a Lush product it is a little disappointing without having the bizarre shape and multitude of colour but if you do look closely to me it resembles a moon with a planet high in the sky which could be a symbol for sleep and night time.

Okay now to the fun but which is actually using a massage bar. For anyone who has ever used one of these then they are all used in the same way and for anyone who hasn’t well it is really simple because you pretty much mimic the actions of washing your hands using a bar of soap. To melt the bar you simply rub it between your (preferably warm) hands which will then loosen some of those calming essential oils and butters (if you look at your hands they will appear to be slightly greasy) to enable you to massage much easier so that your fingers glide over the skin. Now your hands are not greasy at all, what you will find is that those essential oils are lubricating your hands to allow massaging much easier and you simply being to massage your partner into a world of pleasure. You can pretty much massage most parts of the body but depending on the ingredients do be careful with ‘your bits’ and always check to see if it would be okay and would not cause irritations.

After using this massage bar you may need to towel off any excess oils because as good as it is at disappearing totally into your skin I have always found there to be parts that have been missed and unless you want to leave any stains around your home, always double check that it has all been massaged completely into your skin or that you do towel yourself off afterwards for double checking.

Now having said that this massage bar does look quite plain and simple it does smell absolutely amazing and for anyone who is an avid fan of Cocoa butter and Lavender then you will certainly enjoy the smell of this.

Firstly there is a combination of both Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter both of which are known to moisturise the skin thoroughly and help smooth out any blemishes on your skin. Then we have Lavender Oil whose scent has a calming effect which may aid in relaxation and the reduction of anxiety. Closely following we have Ylang Ylang Oil which is said to have a euphoric and sedative effect on the nervous system helping to ease stress and anxiety and then we have Fennel Oil which is extremely versatile and is known to ease anxiety and tension by arousing calmness and relaxation and it also helps to reduce cellulite! Now within every Lush product there is an odd component which stands out, I have found one in every product so far, the reason being is that I always check the ingredient list as you can do yourself at www.lush.co.uk or when you are in any Lush shop any assistant can tell you what the ingredients are.

Anyway, within Sleepy Head the odd component for me is ‘Horsetail Herb Extract’… who and what? Well upon further investigations it appears that it is a natural antioxidant and when used upon your skin it helps heal and ease any skin complaints such as eczema and inflammation but it has a whole host of properties and is used much in many other ways. For anyone who is unsure they should look into each ingredient to ensure it will not irritate them or cause further problems.

As for the smell, well it does remind me of Palmers Cocoa butter with a strong hint of Lavender which together do make a wonderful aroma once even before the oils are released onto your hands and body when you start to massage. I personally love the smell and it will be the first thing you notice when you remove it from the packaging and it does linger on your body for a good few hours after using. If you are not a fan of Lavender than you probably won’t like this product very much at all.

To get a good use of this bar it is suggested that you should be massaging your body (or should I say, get a loved one to massage it for you) for a minimum of 30 minutes a few times a week so that you can ensure your whole body has been thoroughly covered and also that you have been given a good massage! After using this product I did find that my skin was feeling really soft and totally moisturised and had a healthy glowing effect and it did help to induce sleep and when I use this product I sleep like a baby with no problems, it doesn’t take long for the Lavender to take effect at all.

So do I recommend this product? Well you won’t be surprised to learn that I would recommend Sleepy Head massage bar to anyone who loves a good Lush product and even one that is quite ordinary looking. It does exactly what it claims to do, in that it will induce sleep and give you give a peaceful nights rest and it is cheap for the length of time it seems to last, in my case a good few months and I use it a few times a week if I can get my own way.

**Extra Information**

If anyone wants to investigate Lush further to see what ingredients are used for this or any other products then you simply go to www.lush.co.uk which will give you the UK version of their website.

Lush products are not tested on animals, in fact they are vehemently against products being tested on animals and to test their own products they do tests on humans to ensure they are safe for general sale to the public and they will not buy ingredients from companies who use testing on animals as one of their protocols.

Lush first officially launched their products in 1995, although they had been around for many years previous and their name was decided upon in a competition after many years of working under the name 'Cosmetics to go' as a mail order company and so to Poole in Dorset the firm grew and became globally known.

Can you get your boyfriend to have a word with mine because if I moan for about three hours that I need a massage the best I can get is a 30 second prod in the shoulder. I don't think I could ever get a proper massage out of him :(

I don't like their massage bars as a rule but you might just have tempted me to try again with this one.
