Advantages: Beautiful fragrance & silky smooth skin
Disadvantages: Shrapnel type glitter!
Recently I have had a few Lush items from EBay, generally items that you can't obtain in store or online anymore and one of these was Snowcake soap. This has been a limited edition Christmas soap in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008 - Snowcake manages to make a comeback by popular demand every Christmas, though in 2001 it was sold as "Big Ed Soap" in the shape of a snowman's "big head." This wonderful soap keeps making an appearance every year just because it is so fabulous, so why doesn't Lush make it a permanent fixture?! But anyway as soon as I saw it on EBay I had to have it as it has been a good few months since not smelling that sweet, smooth almond scent!
Fragranced with the delicious aroma of almond and sugar paste, considering I'm a marzipan junkie, it should come as no surprise that Snowcake gets five enthusiastically stars from me. (Note: if you like this soap's scent, you'll love Lush's Smitten Hand Cream which is to die for!)
Flawlessly creamy, smooth, and giving you mounds of snow-white lather, Snowcake also works a treat at keeping your sweet tooth at bay throughout the holiday season. (My doctoral orders: anytime you're feeling weak around the Christmas chocolate tin immediately run into the bathroom and wash your hands with Snowcake. I'm giving you dietary pearls here, and when you still fit into that skimpy party dress come New Year's Eve, you'll want to keep in mind that I readily accept all manner of thank you gifts. Except for firstborn children. The gesture is appreciated, but the required routine maintenance work is not.)
There is a catch to my shared wisdom, though: as Christmases passed and Snowcake became a staple in almost every Lushette's stash, Lush decided that no amount of freshly-driven snow is without twinkly bits that glisten in the sun. So, in 2004, they briefly added a thin layer of iridescent sparkly bits along the top of their scrumptiously snowy cake. Which when you think about it, this glittery fairy dust is by all means "christmasey" so you would think!
Again, pearls of wisdom: if you get a Snowcake slice containing this shrapnel-like confetti, you should feel free to subtract a star from my review. This shrapnel confetti is not the soft glittering dust you are led to expect and it can be quite sharp, so you have been warned, Christmas is not all about fun! However, to my wisdom I have noticed that the pre-bagged pieces (which are perfectly rectangular) do not seem to contain so much shrapnel in, however if you get a piece cut from a block in store it seems to contain the lethal glitter which will leave you quite unhappy!
I've been a fan of Snowcake for years and even though I have come across the shrapnel (albeit only a few times) it leaves my skin silky smooth and the lovely almond fragrance will stay with you all day, whilst the oils in the soap keep my skin moisturised, even in the harsh cold winter weather! I prefer to use this in the bath as its far more relaxing and you get to enjoy the scent far more whilst sitting in a bath tub! Only thing is, it can melt quite quickly so try not to leave it too near water or else you could get a pile of white mush in your soap dish!
But basically the fact that Snowcake makes a comeback year after year must mean that this is a highly popular soap which is always a staple in my stash! Unfortunately as Lush only bring this out at Christmas I cannot give the price or blurb on it. However, this soap for 100g is generally around the £3.00 mark and always comes in Christmas gift boxes so keep your eyes on the look out for this come Christmas!
Summary: Needs to be available all year round!
