Advantages: Lovely smell, nice idea in theory

Disadvantages: Sadly, a bit pointless

Back when ballistics (fizzing, foaming balls to throw into the bath to scent and soften the water) were Lush's mainstay, I remember them saying in their publicity that Baths were for those who appreciate luxury, and showers for the spartans amongst us. Since then Lush have broadened their market and produce a huge range of toiletries. I think Emotibombs are Lush's attempt to draw in the confirmed shower-ers amongst us. There is nothing quite like a Lush bath (don't even get me started on some of their poor imitators...), but there are plenty of decent shower gels on the market to compete with the lovely ones produced by Lush, so they've had to try to replicate the 'Lush experience' for those who prefer to shower.

I like both, but convenience before work in the morning, as well as saving water (and therefore money, and the world) has led me to take more showers than baths in recent times and this is why my lovely daughter included a couple of Emotibombs in the hand picked gift box of Lush stuff she bought me for Christmas.

The 'Emoti' part of the name comes from the idea that this range of products are mood enhancing. As the name suggest, this one is designed to be in invigorating morning shower - it gives off citrus scents of lemon, lime and grapefruit as it fizzes in your shower. I never find it easy to get up and these dark mornings are a killer, so anything that promises to help is worth a try!

The instructions are to place it on the floor of your shower, my shower is over my bath and I didn't trust the Emotibomb not to disappear down the plug hole, so I put the plug in, placed it on top of the plug, and delighted as it began to fizz! It smelt lovely and cheerful, but then the increasing pool water meant that I felt it was getting swamped in the water more like a bath bomb, so I picked it up, and inhaled the scents as it continued to fizz. I didn't really know what to do with it, it doesn't claim to clean you, or to do anything but smell nice. With hindsight I should maybe have put it on the soap shelf, closer to nose level, but anyway as it was I let it disintegrate in my hands and then got on with my shower. This meant using shampoo, and shower gel, both of which smelt stronger than the Emotibomb and meant that the lemon lime scent was soon forgotten.

There are several flaws with the Emotibomb, one is that it will tend to disappear, and unless you have a sit down shower your nose is a fair way away from the scent - which seems like a waste. Secondly it is an extra, it doesn't replace anything you are originally buying, you need your shampoo and gel or soap as well, so it is an additional expense, and to be honest an additional faff, which is difficult to justify. Thirdly, because of needing to use other products, your shower is likely to already be scented, especially if you are a big fan of Lush products in general! The only exception to this latter perhaps being those who can't use perfumed products on their skin, so may benefit from the Emotibomb's scent, but only in the same way as having a scented candle in the bathroom really.

It is not often that I criticise Lush, and I really did want to try this, as it is a nice idea in theory, but it doesn't work. The problems with it are easy to see a mile off, which makes it surprising to me that the range ever got into production. The current Lush price for these is £1.91, which is comparable with a bath bomb but no where near the same value. I suspect that they will be retired soon, nice try, but really not worth the bother.

Summary: Keep buying the bath bombs instead!
