Advantages: moisturises skin, makes your bath bubbly

Disadvantages: expensive for one use, doesn't smell of mango, leaves residue in bath

I’m definitely a shower person rather than a bath person simply because I always seem to be pushed for time and showers are always a faster option. So I don’t really have baths very often but when I do I like to make the most of my time by relaxing and there’s nothing like a treat from Lush to turn the tub into a mini spa in which I can unwind and just spend some time pampering myself. My friend first recommended the bath melts to me one of our usual shopping trips where we inevitably end up buying something from Lush. In the past I’ve tended to buy liquid bubble baths or the bath ballistics and don’t think I’ve ever tried anything similar to a bath melt before but it was worth a go and at £2.10 for a 30g bar they’re one of the cheaper products that Lush has available. I decided to go for ‘You’ve been Mangoed’ mainly because they had a promotional stand of it in store describing it as ‘bright and breezy’. This is a new product so Lush was probably trying to push sales; well it worked on me!

The bath melt is brightly coloured as you can see from the photo which in my opinion makes it looks more synthetic compared to the earthy colours that I’m used to seeing in lush. But rest assured it, one quick inspection of the ingredients list confirms that it contains all the natural ingredients we’re used to from Lush. The bath melt also has ‘Mango’ engraved on the top of the bar. As with all lush bath melts they have a Cocoa butter base and then add to this essential oils and other natural butters to create the bath melt. This means that they melt even from the heat of your hand so beware when you go to pick one up otherwise you’re hand will be layered with grease!

The name of the product is in one sense slightly misleading seeing as though the smell of mango is completely indistinguishable. To me this bath melt smells of lemons and limes, even oranges perhaps, in fact in all its fruitiness there’s not a whiff of mango to be detected. However, despite this the bath melt does have a pleasant fruity aroma.

Upon putting the melt under running water it melts within seconds and all £2.10 worth dissolves to leave a layer of foam. Beneath this you see that the water has turned a, well, interesting colour, it reminded me of carrot soup only slightly brighter but don’t let this put you off getting in! The smell seems to intensify upon melting as all those lovely essential oils are released. I like the smell it’s pleasantly fruity but I still don’t think the product name is justified because I can’t detect mango at all. When I got out of the bath I was impressed with the softness of my skin, it felt incredibly moisturised, probably due to the various natural butters that the product contains such as avocado butter. Even once I’d dried myself off my skin was really soft and I didn’t feel I needed moisturiser at all, the smell remains faintly on the skin and even seems linger until the next day.

All of Lush’s bath melts have a typical moisturising quality due to all the natural butters and oils but unfortunately they do seem to leave a layer of scum on the bath so you have to clean it out straight after using otherwise it will be left slippery and a peachy colour.

Overall I’m really not that impressed by this product. At £2.10 for only one usage I think it’s quite an expensive product. Its moisturising quality is impressive but it only lasts for one usage so frankly I think I’d rather just buy a bottle of moisturiser. The foam isn’t anything remarkable and a dollop of Radox would produce a greater lather and wouldn’t leave the residue in the bath afterwards either. It’s a nice enough product but personally I don’t think it’s worth the price (or the cleaning up afterwards!)

Thanks for reading!

I *deserve* a Lush bath tonight, the day I've been having! But I'd still only ever use half a one of these at a time.
