Advantages: A decent, reasonably priced shower gel
Disadvantages: Don't use it on your hair despite what it says on the bottle
When it comes to shower gels for us men there is only a limited choice of brands about and perhaps the most prominent of those would be Lynx. I've been using Lynx products for as long as I can remember and while I have tried other shower gels every now and then I always seem to navigate back to my original Lynx. I think it must be a good 15 years since I first tried one of their shower gels and chances are that first flirtation was with this one, Lynx Africa.
It's fair to say that Lynx have cornered the Male shower gel market in recent years and I think you'd struggle to find a man in his 20's who doesn't have at least one bottle of this shower gel that he's been given as a present. There are numerous other fragrances in the Lynx range but over the years Africa has been one of the most popular. The bottle is fairly standard Lynx fair, with easy grip edges down both sides and the Lynx logo on the front of the bottle and all the important science information on the back. With the Africa it comes in a simple black design, however other variations of Lynx come in a variety of different colours.
One of the most important aspects of a shower gel has to be its scent and I've certainly found Lynx Africa to be amongst the best on the market. When you pop the top off the shower gel bottle you get a very strong scent that doesn't overwhelm you. There is a fruity smell there that certainly contain some spicy notes. Pouring it out of the bottle the green/blue liquid lathers up with relative ease. This also helps to extract a bit of the scent and starts to tone down the smell as it starts to lather up on your body.
The bottle states that you can also use Lynx Africa shower gel as a hair shampoo, but from personal experience I certainly wouldn't recommend it. While the gel itself left my skin feeling quite smooth, with a very subtle and spicy scent I found that the results on my hair were quite different. Having rinsed the lather out of my hair and dried it, I found my hair becoming very hard, itchy and sticking together in lumps. It was almost like I'd tipped a pot of styling gel onto it. For that very reason I would stick to using Africa as a body lotion and nothing else.
With a lot of shower gels you need a lot of gel to actually get a decent lather but I've found with Lynx that they have found the knack of making a little go a long way. This means that while the scent is a little strong from the bottle it leaves you with a very subtle and refreshed feeling all over. This feeling tends to last for a good few hours and with the addition of some Lynx Dry deodorant I do find that the combination leaves me feeling far fresher than a lot of the alternatives.
Overall whilst I've tried numerous different types and brands of shower gel I do seem to always find myself coming back to Lynx Africa. It helps of course that it's available from just about every store that sells shower gel and that whilst the retail price is £2.19, it's very rare you'll ever pay that. I've always picked up Lynx products in special offers like buy one get one free or at 99p a bottle, which makes it extraordinary value. This is a very good product that does exactly what it says on the bottle and I find it to be far better quality than a lot of the competition and as competitively priced as any Supermarket own brand.
Summary: The best selling Lynx brand
