Advantages: Smells good, moisturises well, cruelty free
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest
As I browsed the toiletries section in my local Marks & Spencer one cold winter day, I spotted this body butter. The words 'Inspired by nature's goodness' jumped out at me and the mention of Sicilian limes immediately made me think of summer skies, the Mediterranean and long, cool drinks on the patio. It seemed to be the perfect antidote to a grey day in Sheffield. I took the lid off and had a sniff. The voluptuous looking pale green cream had a definite citrus aroma combined with a subtle flowery fragrance, which I assumed came from the bergamot. In fact, it reminded me a little of Earl Grey tea. The sweet scent of cocoa butter counteracted the sharpness of the citrus and overall it had a refreshing yet soothing smell. To be honest, if I hadn't known it contained lime, I would have guessed that this product contained grapefruit, but this wasn't a problem for me as I adore the scent of grapefruit.
The product claims to "leave your skin and senses awakened." It contains African cocoa butter to condition the skin. I am often drawn to products which contain cocoa butter, as I have always been impressed by its ability to soothe, hydrate and balance my skin. Cocoa butter contains a lot of antioxidants, the most powerful of which is vitamin E. Antioxidants are crucial to wellbeing of the skin as they help to destroy free radicals (the small molecules that are formed as a result of the skin's exposure to pollutants, sunrays, etc., which can damage the skin prematurely.) By regularly rubbing an antioxidant-rich cream into your skin, you can destroy these free radicals before they can do any harm. In addition to its antioxidant properties, cocoa butter also contains a substance called tryptophan, which plays a key role in the formation of serotonin, the 'feel good' chemical that is also produced when we eat chocolate or take exercise. So there are lots of reasons to use a cocoa-butter based product as part of your skin care routine.
The information on the pot tells us that Sicilian limes have been used for centuries to invigorate the skin. Lime oil has astringent properties, which improve the skin tone and also help to detoxify the skin, boosting circulation and fighting cellulite. Bergamot fruit oil has antiseptic properties, making it suitable to sooth problem skin.
I couldn't wait to try this body butter. When I did, I was delighted to find that it felt pleasantly cool against my skin as I applied it after a bath. It spread very easily over my skin. I hate time-consuming creams that take ages to rub in. Sometimes I neither have the time nor the energy to spend ages rubbing creams into my skin, so it is always good to find something that is so quickly absorbed, yet leaves your skin feeling well-moisturised. The texture was lighter than many body butters I have used. I don't have particularly dry skin, so this was fine for my needs, leaving my skin feeling hydrated with no greasy, sticky sensation after application, which I have sometimes found with thicker, richer body butters. The fresh, summery scent lingered on my skin for a couple of hours afterwards and I found it a really uplifting scent. Whether that was anything to do with the serotonin 'feel good' factor or whether it was just that the summery scent reminded me of wide-skied, bright, warm summer days, I don't know. All I can say is that I love the scent and texture of this body butter and it gives a luxurious, pampered feel to my skin. I think, because of its invigorating properties, this body butter would be best suited to daytime use. It left my skin feeling refreshed, clean and I am sure that I observed a slight toning effect even on the first application to my cellulite-prone areas.
I would enthusiastically recommend this body butter. It is one of my favourites. Although I could happily use it all year round, I think it is particularly summery and its light texture and fragrance would make it ideal for warmer days. I understand that bergamot oil is an insect repellent, so perhaps if I used this on summer evenings, it would stop me being bitten to glory by the midges.
This cost me £6 for a 200ml pot. I know there are cheaper body butters out there, but there are also more expensive ones. The product did last me a while as a little goes a long way. The product bears the jumping rabbit symbol, which tells us that it is BUAV approved, always a crucial factor for me as I disagree with animal testing. The vibrant green packaging, bearing a photo of juicy limes, is attractive enough for it to make a nice present, either on its own or with another product from the Ingredients range, which includes matching bath creams and scrubs. If you thought M&S was a bit old-fashioned and not particularly exciting, you may be pleasantly surprised by this sensuous, revitalising body butter.
