I have to say at the beginning that Colgate is always my toothpaste of first choice. However, my dentist always used to advise me to switch toothpaste occasionally so as to give the bacteria that causes plaque and tartar something else to think about. Following his advice, I therefore recently gave Mentadent P in its 100 ml tube a go.

Now, I'm not sure whether the P in the title stands for plaque or for protection or maybe even both, but anyway this toothpaste claims to strengthen your teeth, remove existing plaque, protect your teeth from plaque and freshen your breath. In fact, everything that you'd want it to do.

Obviously, the last claim is the easiest to prove and the toothpaste certainly has a very pleasant taste and gives a nice freshness to your breath. The other claims are harder to substantiate, particularly if you are only using the stuff as an occasional substitute for your regular brand. However, this is a proper fluoride toothpaste that's been around for a while and I certainly haven't had any tooth problems whilst using it.

I dislike trips to the dentist as much as anyone and don't like to mess around with false economies as far as my teeth are concerned. I'm very happy and satisfed with this stuff, which you can buy from Boots the Chemist costing a couple of pounds.

Summary: A toothpaste advertised to target and give protection from plaque
