Advantages: Effective protection from perspiration, smells good
Disadvantages: More expensive than its rivals
Mitchum Smart Solid anti-perspirant and deoderant is one of the few vaguely effective anti-perspirant sticks out there that:
a) Actually helps keep your pits dry
b) Doesn't smell like a tart's handbag
I first tried this product this summer after wrestling with fairly active sweating since hitting puberty and to date I've been very pleased with the results. After coming to London from Edinburgh (there's a slight temperature difference in August!) I was feeling at my wit's end - nobody likes looking like they've just stepped out of the sauna on the way home from the office.. Nastier, over the counter anti-perspirants had been a complete failure, with some of them causing actual burns and scabbing to my delicate areas.
The Mitchum product doesn't stop sweating in the affected areas entirely (no cosmetic product can), but it does keep me dry unless I rush about a lot or otherwise exert myself physically - for example, the ten flights of stairs on the way to the office. For weekends, socialising and daily use it does the job well.
It dries reasonably quickly once applied and has a mild scent that I'd put half way between herbal and medical. Either way, it's far from unpleasant. The Smart Solid lasts relatively well (about a month per stick) and while you can lose the bit at the end to the floor (see the previous three star review), I feel it's relatively good value for money. It's definitely pricier than other anti-perspirant (maybe add 25% onto what you normally pay?) but it can often be found in special offers in Boots and other high street chemists.
One small thing I should note is that prolonged use can lead to white residue on your clothes. Its claim that it doesn't stain is true enough, but six months or more of wearing it with regularly worn dark t-shirts and the like will lead to some marking on the interior of the affected garments. It's not nearly significant to be seen through the fabric and I only mention it for the sake of completeness.
The best anti-perspirant you can buy without prescription(significantly better than the spray anti-perspirant from Mitchum) and considerably kinder to your skin.
Summary: Great anti-perspirant for those who need a little help staying dry!
