Advantages: Does exactly what it claims

Disadvantages: A bit expensive

To my embarrassment I have to admit that the first time I received a bottle of Molton Brown body wash was as a Christmas present a few years ago and the first thought which went through my head was “what a cheap skate, getting me a yucky brown shower gel”. It wasn’t till a little while later that I learnt that this stuff is not actually that cheap and that rather than being yucky it is really nice. So when Mrs CFC treated me to some for my birthday a few weeks back, I couldn’t wait to start using it.

>>>> What Do Molton Brown say about their own product

“Get ready for a deeply aromatic adventure. This spicy infusion heightens your senses and reawakens your energy banks when you most need it. Steeped in detoxifying black pepper oil, the gel formulation helps to boost circulation and leaves the skin feeling deeply cleansed, warmed up and ready for action.” - taken from the Molton Brown website

>>>> Look and Smell

To be honest it does look rather yucky, as it is brown in colour, something similar to tea and has the consistency of runny honey. The fact that it comes in a clear plastic bottle, doesn’t really improve its visual appeal, and until you start to use it is really quite off putting. When you open the bottle, there is a slight smell to it but not one that fills the room; in fact you have to get very close to the bottle before you really get a proper whiff of the contents. Surprisingly for a product that has black pepper in its name, it doesn’t really smell of pepper but more of a mixture of spices that tickle your nostrils and wakes you up.

>>>> Using it

The most appropriate way to use it is of course is in a shower as a body wash/ shower gel, but it can also be added to a bath and it is this way which I prefer. When using it as a body wash, you really do not need to use much and a small drop, about the size of 2 50p coins will lather up nicely in your hands before applying to the rest of your body. But when using it in the bath you only need a small amount, personally I fill the bottles lid with some and pour that in, and this provides a nice layer of cleansing bubbles across the surface. What you will notice whether you use it in the shower or in the bath, is that when it reacts with hot water it seems to increase the products smell and it is at this point that the whole room fills with a wonderful aroma filled with spices and so do any adjacent rooms.

>>>> Does it work?

I would have to say yes, to all of Molton Brown’s claims. The aroma that exudes from this body wash really does wake you up, but more surprising is that it also has a very relaxing aspect to it, especially when soaking in a bath, so much so, that I always have trouble leaving the confines of the bath, it is that nice. The actual smell also lingers on your skin for a good hour after finishing your bath as it also does in the bathroom. It also does a great job on the washing front, leaving your skin feeling very clean and fresh, although not overly moisturised. Plus it definitely does make you feel very warm which is down to the black pepper oil, which aids in stimulating blood flow. All in all it is one of a very small number of bath products that I have come across which does everything it promises to.

>>>> Packaging

As is the case with the majority of Molton Brown products, the packaging is quite understated but also quite classy. The body wash comes in a transparent PET bottle with a silver screw top lid, with the Molton Brown logo embossed around the side. The bottle itself has the Molton Brown logo printed on it, along with both its claims and a list of ingredients. The bottle does not have any special sort of dispensing method and is not squeezable, as the body wash quite happily slides out of the open neck.

>>>> Price and Availability

Molton Brown Re-charge Black Pepper body Wash can be widely brought from leading high street chains such as John Lewis and can also be purchased directly from the Molton Brown website, the usual price for the body wash is £15 for 300ml.

>>>> Recommendation

Even though at £15 this body wash is quite expensive, and I am sure you could get cheaper brands that near enough do the same thing, I would definitely recommend it as it really does achieve everything it claims to do. What is particularly good about it is that even though it may feel rather like runny honey, this consistency means you do not need to use that much and a bottle does last for quite a while.
