"Horses sweat, gentlemen perspire and ladies glow. " This slightly pretentious expression was used to describe the delicate matter of underarm perspiration. There was nothing delicate about the pongs which rose on a summer day from the gentlemen who considered it sissy to use deodorants until the early 60's or thereabouts. I know, because I was there. Could this be why it was considered discourteous for said gentlemen to remove their jackets in polite company? Prior to 1888, what with Friday night baths, no showers and several layers of clothes, I wonder if the present day citizen could have stood the natural essences which would have been evident to the fastidious nose midway through a coming out ball. It was during 1888 that an unknown inventor produced the very first deodorant in the form of a cream and called it Mum. It was not until the 1940's that, on the principle of the newly invented ball-point pen, the first roll-on anti-perspirant was developed, and later in 1952 marketed under the name Ban roll-on. Later, during the 60's and 70's a newly affluent society offered a ready customer base for a plethora of anti-sweat products glammed up with perfume. Impulse remains one of the most successful ever. However, through all the years of innovation, including sprays, creams and heady new perfumes, Mum has stood the test of time. It just goes on and on and still has it's place prominently on supermarket and chemist shelves. I know this because I have used it for over 40 years, only breaking the pattern when the shelf was empty. I also know that it still sells well, as there are often few left to choose from. I have heard that one's body can become used to a product such this but mine hasn't. From the early days Mum has given 24 hour protection, doesn't sting after shaving and contains no alcohol. When new antiperspirants hit advertising space heralding a non-sting version, t
hey were not to admit that we had used one for yonks with this property. Then yet another company stated that their's was safely unperfumed either for sensitive skin or so that there would be no clash with other scents; without of course letting on that Mum had an unperfumed roll-on among it's 7 fragrances. Whatever emphasis on a product was used in advertising, good old Mum had got there first without the fanfare. Mum comes in an unfussy plastic bottle 5" tall and 1 1/2" wide, with the back and front inset for grip. The shape is quite stylishly unassuming and the cap fits flush to the body. I suppose the word phallic comes to mind to describe it, if only at a quick glance. Keep your comments clean please! Mine, the unperfumed version, is white with a grey cap. Others are coloured according to the scent within. These include Sunburst with a a citrusy fragrance and another is Peach. Among other light fragrances are Pink, Blue and Aqua. Mum also produces a Cool and a Classic range for men. So why have I stayed loyal to Mum all these years? Simply because I like it and it has never let me down. I buy the 50ml size for £1.19, although prices can vary a little and offers are available fairly often The water-clear liquid, which is picked up easily by the ball set in the top, is free-flowing without being runny and leaves no marks to be transferred to clothes. It rolls on easily with a pleasant cool feeling, and a momentary slight stickiness dissipates so quickly that I have forgotten that I have applied it by the time I dress. Above all, I can forget that I am wearing it. However hot the day or strenuous the exercise, I may have sweat running into my eyes, but my underarms are dry and comfortable and my clothes unstained. Mum is an old friend that doesn't mind being taken for granted. It has seen me safely through the frenetic years of all-night rock and roll parties, the early discos and mad
dashes across country on horseback - when a sudden loss of nerve brought sweat to my brow. Added to it's reliability, my Mum has never at any time been the cause of a rash or dryness of my skin. So eat your hearts out you ever - new and sexily scented underarm pamperers. Long after you are gone, my Mum will be sitting beside my toothpaste.
