Advantages: peach smell, cheap, effective
Disadvantages: sticky, subtle smell
Mum has been a familiar and trusted name on the chemist shelves for many years. It seems a safe brand name, it sounds reliable. Let’s face it, Bristol-Myers Co. Ltd. had a pretty safe bet calling a deodorant Mum. This is a word, which brings a smile to most women’s faces as they think of their own mother or the name their own kids call them. Well, it does to me anyway, which is why it is a brand I often return to, when I am looking for something to buy. Admittedly, I can’t see hardened macho tattooed bikers buying this stuff – or indeed any blokes – but it sounds like a shrewd business decision to me and one that has presumably made the company a lot of money over the years. So when I was looking for a deodorant to buy at my local chemists a couple of months ago, Mum was a name that I noticed straight away. It was also cheap, selling for around 60p, which is always an essential component in deciding whether I buy it. Shop around though, as it can cost up to £1.10! The final selling point, which got me hooked completely, was the fragrance – fresh peach. I love fruity smells and this one sounded gorgeous. The cap was a rather attractive shade of orange too. It had to be mine. I must have had this bottle a good two or three months now and it’s only just running out, which is why I thought I’d better write about it. I use it twice daily most of the time, so you certainly get your money’s worth with a 50ml bottle. The packaging offers 24-hour protection, but personally, I like to ensure I don’t smell sweaty at all, so I haven’t tried the full day’s test. However, I have been happy with its longevity and effectiveness and thankfully, I haven’t noticed any pongy whiffs emanating from my armpits. This particular Mum is an anti-perspirant roll on. Whether you choose anti-perspirants or not and whether you prefer a roll on, spray or stick is an individual choice.
I tend to avoid aerosols in case they bring on an asthma attack, but otherwise I chop and change. This Mum contains no alcohol, if you are allergic to that too. The writing on the back warns you not to use it on sore or broken skin, but also boasts of its ‘gentle, non-sting formulation’. These two statements sound rather contradictory to me, but from my experience, the deodorant has never stung, although I am very careful if I have to apply it after shaving. It didn’t seem as gentle on shaved armpits as the Avon On Duty cream stick I use sometimes, but the Mum was certainly bearable. I do find roll ons can be a bit sticky when you use them, so your armpits feel a bit wet for a few seconds after applying. This is the same, but it is only a minor inconvenience, not a big problem. The peach fragrance is subtle, although recognisable. If you know what it is, you can smell it, but you’re not going to walk into a room and find everyone turns towards you sniffing loudly and asking ‘Peaches?!’ Personally, I would prefer something slightly stronger (such as the Original Source lemon deodorant, where the smell is quite obvious), but this certainly won’t have any conflicts with your perfume, the peach will happily blend into the background like the traditional wallflower at the office party. You can buy Mum deodorant in several different fragrances including the usual floral versions, sporty ones and unscented. So to sum up… ADVANTAGES Nice smell, with other fragrances available Cheap Lasts well Attractive packaging Small, light, handbag-friendly sized bottle Reliable brand name Easily available Roller ball moves easily DISADVANTAGES Slightly sticky after applying Peach smell could be stronger Not quite as gentle on shaved armpits as Avon’s version OVERALL I will be buying this again, but will sti
ll try out other brands. It is a good product and very good value for money, but not perfect enough for me to pledge my exclusive loyalty to.
