Advantages: Removes hair easily, effectively, efficiently and quickly and quite cheap

Disadvantages: None other than it being slightly uncomfortable the first time of using

When it comes to hair removal the one thing I hate is shaving, to me it isn't a very feminine process and is something I will only do if I have no other option. In the past I have tried an array of products from wax strips, hair removing cream and mousse to going to a salon to have my hair professionally ripped out of my legs and it was so painful I never went back.

Recently, a friend of mine who is by trade a beautician told me I should use Nads because it is really easy to use. Now being a Northern Lass myself the word Nads beings something entirely different and probably quite inappropriate, so with a stifled giggle I decided to use my old trusted friend Google to see exactly what Nads was.

Nads is an Australian company which is owned by the Ismiel family and it was founded back in 1992 when Sue Ismiel the Mother of the family used ingredients from within her own kitchen to create a hair removing product for her daughter but it wasn't until 1998 that the product become successful within the USA which then led to further successes across the world including the products being sold here in the UK. It wont surprise you to read that Nads uses ingredients from sources as close to nature as possible in their products and nor are they tested on animals.

The product range from Nads is quite extensive for both men and women and you can buy anything from wax strips, facial hair removal wands, hair removal gels, ingrown hair solutions and soothing body balms. So I opted for the original product which is the no heat hair removal gel which I bought from Boots for £14.91 which does sound like a lot of money, however within the package it comes in there was also 5 cotton strips, an orange stick, a spatula, some wipes and most importantly the instructions which told you what to do and how to use it.

When it comes to using the gel it sounds very similar to using wax because the gel removes the hair from the root and in doing this it makes the growing back time of those hairs a lot longer than it would do if you shaved your legs on a weekly basis. By waxing or in this case gelling your legs you should find that it will take between 3-6 weeks for those removed hairs to grow back. In my case if I use this gel it is a 5 week period before I need to use it again. However, using this gel is really easy, a lot easier than I thought although it can be quite messy the first time round.

Nads hair removal gel does not need to be heated, that is probably the most important part of the process to remember and I have to admit that was the part I was most pleased about because I didn't cherish the thought of giving myself third degree burns at home using a home hair removal process. Instead the gel melts naturally using your body's own heat and instead of being a sticky mess like wax can be where you can spend a good 20 minutes or so trying to remove the excess wax from yourself, Nads washes away with warm water. So, so far it is sounding a lot better than wax which hopefully means it is less painful!

I am no expert when it comes to removing hair in this way at all but I did find the instruction leaflet to be really helpful and to make the most effective use of this product the hair you are removing does need to be between 3-5mm long!. There are a few simple steps to follow to complete the process of removing your unwanted leg hair and they are as follows:

Firstly before you begin spreading the gel onto your legs, you are advised to clean the area of your skin using the cleansing wipes which are provided within the extras that come with the package. Once you have done that simply dry the area completely before using the gel. These wipes are to me a little similar to baby wipes but more moist and they simply remove any dirt and grime which is clinging to your skin. As a smell they are quite floral and they do really wet your skin hence the need to dry them completely before applying the gel.

Next step is to apply the gel. Once the lid from the pot has been removed with a simple twist, inside is a green looking gel which is quite thick in texture and reminds me of the hair gel my younger brother used to use in his hair spiking days as a teen. Using the spatula to apply the gel to your legs is a little bit messy if you have too much of it on the spatula at any one time, so I would advise placing a towel under yourself and your legs (I sit on the edge of the bed to apply mine) to catch any spillage and then you spread the gel slowly in the direction in which the hair grows, which in most cases would be downwards and the gel itself is really sticky, so if you apply it too quickly the hairs on your legs will be ripped out as you move the spatula with the gel on it down your legs and if I am totally truthful it is really painful.

The third and final step of this process if using the cotton strips which once again come within your package and you need to smooth them onto your skin and you may need to repeat this process 3 or 4 times to ensure it is as close to the skin as possible and then holding the skin on your leg so that it is taut, pull the strip quite hard in the opposite direction to the way you spread the leg, so in most cases this will be in an upward movement. The first time you do this, it is a bit hit and miss, the most important thing is to ensure the cotton strip is smoothed onto the skin as much as possible to avoid leaving stray hairs behind and thus having to repeat the process over the same area. Is it painful? Well I won't lie and say it isn't at all but it wasn't as painful as I was expecting it to be, it was slightly uncomfortable but manageable.

Once you have finished removing the hair from both legs and you are happy with the results, you can wash away any excess gel from your legs using warm water and then once you have dried your legs, I would suggest adding some form of moisturising cream, if your legs are quite sore, which they shouldn't be, something with Aloe Vera as an ingredient in it works wonders with soothing the skin. There was a slight redness to skin after this process as I expected there would be, but it did settle down after a few hours and is much less painful than cutting yourself shaving that is for sure and you do have super soft smooth legs.

When it comes to the smell of this gel, I assumed it would smell as awful as hair removing creams which linger for hours after you have used them. Thankfully I was proven wrong because it contains lemon and honey it smells really citrusy although the aroma doesn't linger on the skin after using it.

I have been using Nads now for 3 months, I am still using the same tub that I bought which has more than half of the gel left inside and it is used every 5 weeks. You may find that if you don't use this gel on a regular basis it becomes quite runny and water like but that doesn't mean it becomes unusable, instead all you need to do is pop it into the microwave and wait for the gel to begin to boil and then remove it carefully from the microwave and leave it to cool to room temperature where it turns back into its original consistency. For me, this is a product I will continue to use, mainly because the hair which does grow back on my legs has become much easier to remove as time has progressed and it isn't as uncomfortable as it once was so in that respect I am thankful and it has made the whole process of shaving a thing of the past.

Summary: A non-heating gel to remove hair

mmm...ripping out your hair is going to be painful whatever product you put on it - unless it has an anaethetising quality of course. I still think I'll stick to shaving. Nice review :-)

sounds great I'm not very good at inflicting pain on myself in that way though, might get a friend to do it for me :)
