Advantages: Well priced, does the job - at last!! Hours of softness, not greasy, nice scent, all over body
Disadvantages: Contains alcohol and lanolin; not for everyone. Availability.
Nivea and I go back a long way, from the small blue tins of moisturiser to its Nivea Visage for Men products; there's either been a right or a wrong product where Nivea as a brand name is concerned. Firstly although I am a fan of E45 and Sudocreme, I was initially beginning to tire of the "paper" or "clinical" scent I associate E45 and Sudocreme with; its not for the faint hearted although for those consumers who don't like perfumed body lotions and may well have dry skin, those formulas shouldn't go wrong. The problem is with either brand I find both E45 and Sudocreme to be quite thick even when it gets into my skin and makes me feel very oily. If it is used sparingly however E45 or Sudocreme as products are very good but they don't make me feel moisturised with soft or smooth skin but rather sticky, which isn't good news if you are working.
Caught in Savers one day on special offer and priced at £2-37 I picked up Nivea Lotion "Enriched for Dry Skin," and led perhaps by the special offer of the standard 250ml bottle and a smaller travel size bottle free as an incentive, I was more or less falling for the price rather than the brand; in the past although Nivea has always worked for me, it has either been a case of too greasy or too milky with no real substance to it. Although familiar with the brand name, this bottle is white (unlike the beige/corn yellow shown here); it has a blue label matched with a blue top and is usually only available in 250 ml sizing. Unlike most of Nivea products of late, this product seems to have lost the attention of Nivea as they seem to dress everything up in different colours of bottles and labelling for their current range of lotions and creams.
The body lotion is claimed to have a special formula in it to smooth out dry skin areas. Although I had an appointment to see my doctor recently for the plea of Hydrocortisone leading to a lot of dry skin patches appearing on my legs no doubt due to recent stress of no full time employment and getting on with legalities since the death of my dad, the appointment was pushed to the back of my mind when I went for Nivea although even as I admit the price was one of the most leading factors for this purchase, it wasn't just the sole factor for considering. Unlike E45 or Sudocreme, this "enriched" dry skin formula has a light and airy flowery scent to it just like the standard and original Nivea cream. For some buyers already used to the original Nivea scent, that may well put them off, but frankly over a clinical "paper" smell like the type you get with reams of paper, I prefer the flower over the hospital smell of both E45 or the pallid smell associated with Sudocreme!
The lotion however isn't just suitable for the body since it is a gentle formula and claims to further add to its value of being applied to the face. It was my forehead - one of the worst areas on my face that suffers the most the moment I finish showering. Red dry patches form instantly after the water has rinsed away and I was interested as to what this cream could do at best, even at the worst its not always a good idea to wholeheartedly trust putting body lotion on your face without spots appearing due to its rich content.
After showering and towelling down, the first time I used this cream I decided to place my trust in Nivea Lotion Enriched for Dry Skin everywhere. So I applied it liberally all over my body including the tops of my arms, neck and shoulders - the shoulder area being the worst for dry patches whilst scarred red patches of stress related dry skin just above my knees and on my legs further down got the Nivea treatment. In most cases on the red, stress patches of skin the cream seared and soothed through the layers well and I notice how easy this cream dissipates into the skin whilst feeling as if I've been suitably anointed unlike other body lotions that feel as if they just vanish on skin and then leave a greasy film. Not here however!
As the cream settles into the skin and unlike standard Nivea, this lotion is very light even though I clumped it on quite heavily and felt initially quite greasy when walking out of the shower room. Apply it lightly however and still doesn't leave a greasy, oily feeling on skin. At the same time I also applied the cream to my forehead and hoped on a prayer that the skin wouldn't be red come the time to look in the mirror.
After all this time, after all the years of failing products: Nivea Body Enriched for Dry Skin body lotion is a miracle cure! For hours I had soft and smooth skin, no red patches on the face and a great feeling of softness and supple skin. The appointment to my doctor was cancelled. The beauty of this body lotion however is that it doesn't have to be applied straight after showering; even when I've been out in the garden or sitting watching TV, I find myself walking to the bathroom picking up the bottle and applying the cream to my arms and shoulders - the worst parts of my body that seem to get overly dry and itchy at the end of the day. The flowery scent stays for a few hours but it soon dies down leaving smooth and soft skin; absolutely perfect!
It may not be for everyone but Nivea have got a good one here and for those who have combination skin, this product is a rare treat. Although not Ph friendly, this product does contain Lanolin, Alcohol and according to Nivea's claims and wording, appears to be dermatologically approved. I can imagine there will be many consumers who won't be able to use this - but for years waiting for a cream like this, from me it deserves 5 stars. Thanks for reading. İNar2 2009
