Advantages: It works, smells nice.
Disadvantages: Expensive, makes water greasy and bath slippy
Oilatum make a range of bath and body products for 'problem skin' I bought this for my winter skin! For the first time in my life I have eczema, on the backs of my knees, my upper arms and my poor chest :(
* I would like to point out i'm not a scaly monster, my boyfriend reckons he can't even see my dry horrible skin, maybe I am slightly over reacting but i don't like how it feels!
I have no idea where its come from or what has started it but I want rid of it asap so am trying every possible treatment!
I bought the bath emollient from Boots, the bottles on the shelves are either 300ml for £8.80 or 200ml for £7.50, a quick tip though; if you ask behind the chemist counter in Boots though they have the same Oilatum emollient but a 500ml bottle for £8.50! So I of course bought this one, its the same strength as the on-shelf one so you don't lose anything.
You can get this on prescription from your doctors but it won't work out much cheaper as a prescription now costs a ludicrous £7.10!
I'd rather pay a pound more and not have to go to the doctors as i'm petrified of them lol.
The bottle is bright sky blue, it has a white cap (also the measuring device) and on the front it says "Oilatum Emolient, light liquid paraffin, bath emolient for the treatment of dry and itchy skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis"
Perfect, thought me.
You measure the mixture out with the cap as I mentioned, you add 1-3 capfuls to a bath of warm water. Its strange as the liquid is clear but when added to water it turns milky so your bath water will look a bit murky.
The product smells nice though, fresh and kind of creamy.
It will make your water greasy and therefore your bath slippy so be careful!
You then lay in the water submerging as much of your poorly skin as possible, don't laugh but this isn't easy seen as I have eczema on my chest and obviously (cos i'm a girl) if i'm laid on my back this bit sticks out further than the rest of my body so I need my water as deep as poss so all parts are under water!lol.
The instructions on the back of the bottle suggest bathing for at least 10-20 minutes so the product can get to work.
If you prefer a shower you can apply this directly to your skin, rub in and then rinse off.
I feel it probably works better if you're laid in it for longer though in a bath.
When you get out of the bath (taking care not to slip on the now greasy plastic) you have to pat your skin dry rather than rub it as some of the product stays on your skin and keeps working, you'll be able to feel it at first but its not too greasy after a while. I've never got dressed after using this as I bathe on a night so am just wearing a dressing gown but I guess it might be a bit greasy on your clothes and rub off a bit.
The product seems to last a long time as the bottle cap is only small and like I say you only need to use 3 capfuls at most, this is a good thing at this price and it is working well, my skin feels smoother and less sore so its all good :)
For the first week of use, I used it daily as recommended by the lady in Boots but now I only use it twice a week.
Ooh nearly forgot to mention, you don't need to use soap when bathing in this as it contains cleansers.
The bottle will get greasy so is best kept on the side of the bath rather than in your bathroom cabinet where it will make a mess!
You can also buy childrens versions (these cost even more money though) there are instructions for use on children on the back of this bottle; you just put less in the bath, so I guess its suitable for them anyway so you don't need the specialised one.
Despite the greasy bath and skin, this really works and comes highly recommended by me!
Summary: Sorts out my skin :)
