Advantages: Little Miss loves it
Disadvantages: None
At the age of almost 6, my daughter has always been very very good at cleaning her teeth, which led me to believe I had "trained" her well and was a great mum. Not so; I now know the reason. It's to do with marketing and getting her own way.
My almost daily trip to the supermarket led me briefly away from the cleaning products and to the toothpast shelves-she did need some new toothpaste. Her preferred brand wasn't available, so I chose some child's minty toothpaste- that's fine, no problem.
Not so. Picture the scene that night when it came to teeth cleaning time. "I can't use it, it's fizzy". Now, being used to minty toothpaste, I have never been able to describe it as "fizzy" but daughter remained firm. It was fizzy and tingling in her mouth and she could NOT use it. Spoilt! declared hubby with a look of disdain at me. No, not spoilt, I realised (well, maybe a tad), but a product of today's marketing ploys and my willingness to succumb to them for a peaceful life. I looked at the toothpaste I had bought, and realised the problem-no princesses on the front and no bubble gum/tutti frutti taste. Oh dear! So why does she love this toothpaste?
THE PACKAGING
This comes in a squeezy bottle (which little hands can actually hold and squeeze), which stands upright, all the better to see the princesses as you stand and clean your teeth and dream of that handsome prince. Yes, on the front, which is mainly pink, there are pictures of Belle, Cinderella and Jasmine (I think I have got them right). There is the usual Oral B logo but face it, the main thing is that the cap is pink and the princesses are there on the front.
THE BIT FOR ADULTS
I can't be all bad. It is produced by Oral B which I know is an established toothpaste provider and it contains sodium fluoride (0.248%) and an anti cavity product so it has to be ok for those little gnashers.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Watch out when using this because the instructions for use tell you that children under 7 shoud use a pea size amount, that means a tiny amount, and try explaining that to a child when it is tutti frutti flavour and pink. Now, I don't really know what tutti frutti flavour should taste of, but when I tried it, I had to agree with her. It tastes lovely, like the bubble gum I used to have when I was younger. It even smells like bubble gum, so yes, I think I would prefer it to the minty stuff.
INGREDIENTS
Sorbitol, Aqua, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Aroma, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer Sodium Saccharin, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Fluoride.
I don't know what most of them are but if it works, I'm all for a peaceful household!
RECOMMEND?
Yes, for a peaceful household. I can't say whether they keep them there teeth pearly white because they are and unless I did a fair tewst, it's impossible to say whether it's the toothpaste or not. However, the pluspoints are that she has white teeth, and each dental visit, has been told there is no decay ( I must be doing something right). The greatest thing of all is that now it's been reinstated on the sink unit, I have smiles at teeth cleaning time. The downside is my own guilt at the fact that I am a slave to marketing- I don't let this bother me too much, just the odd twinge!
OTHER PRODUCTS
Younger children can have Mickey Mouse and Friends or Pooh and friends in bubblegum flavour.
For the "oldies" there is either Buzz Lightyear in Fruit Blast or The Disney Princesses in tutti frutti flavour.
Great...something for the most discerning child!
WHERE TO BUY
Most supermarkets and chemists. Price I don't like to state as price tends to change
WEBSITE
www.oral-bkids.com. It's actually quite good, with tips for cleaning teeth, flossing etc, instant competitions and the bit I like best is where they can make a note of teeth they lose and keep it as a diary
www.disney.com. Yes, it IS linked to Disney (hence the marketing

- 30/03/07 I know exactly how she feels! I used a different toothpaste once and could say it was fizzy, it left my mouth very sore! She'll grow up when she is ready! and will have lovely teeth! |

- 29/03/07 I could bore you rigid with an explanation of each of those ingredients (nothing bad, don't worry) but I think you've got the right attitude - if it works and keeps her happy then it's perfect. |
