Advantages: Very gentle, even after shaving!, Smells lovely, Lasts well
Disadvantages: None
No one wants to stink. Well, I hope not anyway. Even after I’ve had a shower, I don’t feel ready to go out unless I’ve put deodorant on too. I usually carry some in my bag as well, in case I feel smelly or sweaty at all over the day. Over the years, I have tried various brands including Lush, Original Source and most recently Dove. But one of my favourites is the Avon On Duty range. I own the sheer stick anti-perspirant deodorant in floral, which has a pink cap and pink logo to match. I have found this product to work really well and as I love the smell too, I have bought it twice now, instead of just trying it once and changing to something else, as I often do. The sheer stick version is in one of those rectangular shaped containers with a rounded top which slides off, leaving you with the deodorant stick needing to be pushed upwards by turning a white dial. This means you can turn it so the stick is below the level of the top when not in use, which means you’re less likely to damage it. I like the packaging as it’s simple but nice enough and I love the pink colour, it’s very pretty. Admittedly, this isn’t one you’d buy your brother/husband/father for Christmas because it’s far too girlie. But what do you expect for a variety called ‘floral’? I think it smells lovely though. It’s quite a subtle fragrance, pink and flowery but certainly not an overpowering one. The Avon catalogue describes the scent as ‘fresh and feminine’ which is a fair assessment. It apparently smells of green gardenia, freesia and honey. I can’t say I recognised any of those while sniffing, but I’ll take their word for it. The stick itself is white and quite hard, but it does soften if you press it. This means that it is gentle on your underarms and doesn’t scratch, but it is hard enough not to crumble into little pieces when you use i
t. It is also one of the few deodorants that passes the notorious shaving test! I have used this just minutes after shaving my armpits and it doesn’t hurt or sting at all, which is a rare bonus! Now for those of you thinking this sounds nice, but you don’t like the sheer stick variety, fear not! Avon also do these On Duty deodorants in three other formats – an aerosol spray can (£2.30 for 150ml), a small roller-ball version (£1.50 for 50ml) and a large roller-ball (£2 for 75ml) as well as the sheer stick which sells for £2.50 for 50g. These are regularly on special offer in the brochure though, so you can expect them to be cheaper. I have always paid £1.50 for mine. So some of you might be convinced, but what if you hate floral smells? Or if you’re a hunky male who wouldn’t be seen dead with anything in pink? Well, there’s a solution to this too. Avon produces its On Duty range in five scents so besides the girlie flowery one, there are also these available – Active (green top and logo, described as ‘sporty’ and suitable for both genders), Musk (orange colour, described as ‘sensual’), Original (dark blue design, ‘fresh, confident fragrance’) and Unscented (dark blue) so there should be something there for everyone. If you haven’t got a local Avon representative, don’t worry, you can order online at their website. Overall, I would definitely recommend this. I am confident this will last all day and give me the protection I need, so I don’t stink. Next time you see me, get me to waggle my arms in the air and you can check I don’t smell ;-) (For those who didn’t get the title – my hero, Paul Darrow played Avon in the TV series Blake’s 7. See, it’s quite clever really – when you get it. Oh well. Never mind.)
