Advantages: Lovely scent, keeps you fresh all day, no irritation
Disadvantages: None
I'm not normally fussy about deodorants - I just pick up the first one I see in the shop and buy it. However, the last one I bought was very overpowering and smelled a bit too strong. For that reason the next time I went shopping I chose more carefully, and ended up with Palmolive's Soft & Gentle Cool Cotton deodorant. I'm reviewing the stick version, as shown on the left in the picture above.
~Palmolive~
Palmolive is made by the company Colgate-Palmolive. As you may guess from the name of the company, they also make Colgate toothpaste, as well as making Ajax household cleaner, and more surprisingly Hill's Science Plan dog food.
Palmolive began purely as soap makers. They still make bars of soap but have expanded their range to include deodorants, bath foam, shower gel, liquid soap, shaving gel/foam, shampoo and conditioners.
~Palmolive Deodorants~
Palmolive have a huge range of deodorants, coming in different scents as well as styles, which they began producing in the 1970s. Soft & Gentle was originally a brand in it's own right, but joined it's sister company Palmolive in the last few years, to make even better deodorants. There is now an ordinary Palmolive range, a Palmolive Soft & Gentle Range, and a Palmolive Soft & Gentle Aromatherapy Range. They're made in roll-on, stick and spray form, and have a big range of scents to choose from.
~Palmolive Soft & Gentle~
Palmolive Soft & Gentle is aimed at women (sorry gents!) and they claim that feeling fresh is essential to feeling confident and feminine. It claims to provide 24 hour protection and is available in three formats: spray, roll-on and stick roll-on. Palmolive Soft & Gentle is not tested on animals and contains no animal ingredients. It is available in a range of scents:
Cool Cotton - available in spray and stick form.
Soft Jasmine - available in spray, roll-on and stick form.
After Hours - available in spray and roll-on form.
Aqua Cool - available in spray form only.
Soft Vanilla - available in spray form only.
Pure Linen - available in spray and roll-on form.
Unfortunately Palmolive do not make an unscented deodorant. Unlike many brands, Palmolive do not claim that their deodorant won't cause white marks on clothes. However they advise that if you don't use it excessively, and give it chance to dry, you won't have a problem with white marks.
~Palmolive Soft & Gentle Cool Cotton~
Cool Cotton contains '...... a fresh breeze of delicate flowers and sandlewood with extracts of natural cotton,' and is available only in stick or spray form. It has a white base with a blue lid, and the front has the Palmolive and Aloe logo in green, with Soft & Gentle and Cool Cotton written in blue. The stick form comes in a 45g bottle.
~Directions for use~
As with most deodorants, you are advised to apply a thin layer to your underarms, and allow to dry. As this is in stick form, there is a dial at the bottom to raise the deodorant out of the bottle.
You are warned to not use deodorant on broken skin, and if irritation occurs to discontinue use. As usual, you are advised to keep this out of reach of children.
~Ingredients~
Palmolive Soft & Gentle Cool Cotton contains; Aluminium Zirconlum, Tetrochlorohydrex Glycine Complex, Cyclomethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, PPG-14 Butyl Ether, Phenyl Trimethicone, Hydrogenated castor Oil, PEG-8 Distearate, Parfum, Aloe Barbadensis and Leaf juice.
~My Opinion~
As I said at the start, I wanted a subtle smelling deodorant, and after smelling several different brands at my local Tesco, I decided on this. It's easy to apply (although most deodorants are!), it dries quickly and it doesn't feel at all sticky. I've used this immediately after shaving, and not suffered from any irritation. The 45g bottle that I bought has lasted me three months so far, and I've only just got halfway through it.
I'm a very nervous person and can be extremely shy in some situations, which makes me sweat more than usual. This deodorant has been very effective though and has lasted all day, even when I've been nervous. I can also attest to it's 24 hour claim and have found that even by the next morning I smell clean and fresh. What I like best though is the fact that it does keep you fresh smelling, without having to drowned you in a heavy scent.
Upon applying this deodorant, the scent is quite strong, but as soon as it's dry it's only very faint and I can only smell it by sticking my face in my armpit (which surprisingly smells nice!) This means that it also doesn't clash with any perfumes I decide to wear, like many deodorants do. I can't say it smells of cotton exactly, but it has a delicate scent and is very pleasant. Although it's not intended for men, the scent would be more suitable for men than some of the other brands, although some men might find it too delicate.
One of the things I like about Palmolive is the fact that they don't claim that you won't get white marks. I've tried many different deodorants in the past that claim to be 'invisible' , and have ended up with white streaks on my clothes. With Palmolive, you only need to apply a very small amount, and therefore I've actually never had white marks when using it - not even when wearing black vest tops. As they advise though, I think it would all depend on how much you apply, and how much time you give it to dry.
Especially this time of year, in the Summer, I want to be able to wear whatever I want on the rare sunny days that we get - without having to worry about how I smell. I have to say that I feel Palmolive Soft & Gentle is 100% upto the job and I will continue to buy it from now on.
Summary: good one
