I know this sounds mad but the smell makes me think of amber even though I don't think amber has even got a smell! It must be because of the translucent amber colour of the bar of soap that it makes me think it smells how it looks! It makes my skin feel very clean after I've used it and I think this soap is very refreshing to ...more

hi, my name is julie and i was miss pears 1961. there were 63,000 entrants that year and the prize money was £500. i was only 3 years old and the format of the competition was to see how photogenic the children were in order to offer a years advertising contract. a single photo was submitted and one finalist was chosen from each of 6 regions in the uk. in my year we were invited to southampton docks where the final judging took place on board the ss andes. I met several stars and celebrities of that time who attended this prestigious event and the crowning took place, performed by the previous miss pears. over the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Call Me Miss Pears (398 words)

We used to use Pears soap always but now there are so many gorgeous smelling soaps available we lost interest in it a bit. I went through a phase of doing competitions in January and one of the few prizes I won was a Pears giftset, which sounds nice but it was actually very boring with just 2 bars of soap in it plus a Pears handwash and a hand towel branded with the Pears logo. I gave them my mum for the downstairs bathroom because I keep my precious Lush soap in the upstairs bathroom where my dad isn't likely to get his oily fingers all over them. The Pears is a bit bulky when it's new because its a proper thick oval shape but once the edges start ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pears Soap: An Amber Gem Full Of Nostalgia! (626 words)

Memories are what make me buy this soap from time to time. Happy ones when I first met my husband in 1978; his mum always used this soap, and when I went to stay at his house I will always remember this sturdy chunk of nostalgia perched on the side of the bath in its little dish. My husband (boyfriend then) and I were separated for a while after that, while we did our relative university courses, but we each took some Pears Soap with us, -somehow the scent of this unusual soap transports me back to those days instantly. Every now and then I buy a box from Boots. It is cheap -only 69p and for this you get a relic from times gone by, in more ways that one, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Can You See The Soap Anywhere? (365 words)

A 125 g bar of Pears soap will cost you 95p and believe you me it is money well spent. Pears soap was first sold in 1789 by a Cornish gentleman called Andrew Pears who produced soap from a London factory. Somewhere around 1915 the company was taken over by Lever Brothers and Pears soap production was moved to the North West of England, but I have recently read on the Internet that all of Pears Soap is now made in India. The fascinating concave shaped bar is not created deliberately, as the soap drys it shrinks which then makes that unique shape. The soap bar is then left for three months to `age`. Pear`s is attractively boxed and the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pears Soap: Where's the pears? (544 words)

Pears soap has got a lot of memories for me. I can remember it way back when I was a child. I only ever knew one person who used Pears soap. And that was my elderly Auntie. She always had a bar of Pears soap sitting by her kitchen sink. There was never a time when there wasn't a bar there. So, of course, I used to use this soap round hers. And that was the only time I ever used to wash with Pears soap, as nobody else I ever knew used Pears. So, as you can imagine, I have very fond memories of this particular soap, and always conjurs up happy memories of my childhood round my Aunties place. The soap itself has actually been around since 1807, nearly 200 years. ...  Read the complete review
