Advantages: The oral rinse & spray are pleasant to use
Disadvantages: Over-priced and toothpaste tastes foul
Most people have bad breath at some time and 9 out of10 cases originate from the mouth, either from diseased gums/teeth or general hygiene.
We know how offensive it is to be on the receiving end of someone else’s bad breath so it is particularly embarrassing when we realise that, horrors, we too are causing people to back away with watery eyes.
My husband kindly told me that I was suffering from unpleasant breath and I know it was because I had a build-up of tartar on my lower teeth. Whilst I waited impatiently for a dental appointment, I looked around for a good mouth wash.
An advertisement in a newspaper caught my eye, extolling the virtues of the Retardex range of oral hygiene products.
I decided to go for broke and bought the toothpaste, mouthwash and spray breath freshener.
Toothpaste:
‘Retardex toothpaste is non-foaming, low in abrasion and has a fresh clean taste’. Actually, this isn’t quite how I’d describe the product. Certainly, it is non-foaming, but I found it an oddly unpleasant to use. I prefer my toothpaste to foam so I really feel it’s working. Using Retardex is so ‘flat’ it’s not at all invigorating to use. After use, my mouth didn’t feel clean and I then resorted to my usual toothpaste.
I found the best way round the problem was to use my usual toothpaste for the foaming, feel-good clean and then give a final going over with the Retardex. I confess that my use of the toothpaste has fallen by the wayside and I just use it for emergencies if I run out of my usual brand.
75ml size will set you back £7.95
Oral Rinse (Mouthwash):
Much better. This oral rinse is unflavoured but if you prefer a fresh mint taste, a special mint flavour sachet is included in the box. The sachet can be added to the rinse; shake the bottle gently and it’s ready for use.
Very easy to use, not unpleasant and takes just a 30 seconds to swish round the mouth before spitting out.
500ml = £7.95
Oral Spray:
Great stuff. Easy to use and can be popped into a pocket or handbag for regular use.
Developed for use as part of an oral hygiene programme to help keep your mouth healthy and clean. Quite a strong peppermint ‘hit’ so be careful not to spray the back of the throat.
An 8.3ml slimlined spray tube costs £2.99
All the Retardex products contain an active ingredient called CloSYS 11® which ‘eliminates, not masks, bad breath on contact and carries on working all day long’.
The burning question: Does it work?
Yes, but only for so long! I can’t say the product justifies the high price. Regular brushing (at least twice a day) is the only answer and 6-monthly visits to the dentist to banish tartar build-up. Unfortunately, finding a dentist these days is akin to asking for eternal life so we need to find ways round oral problems in between visits.
In conclusion:
The Retardex brand is probably an over-priced reaction to the dearth of dentists and our quest for fresh breath whilst we find one. The toothpaste I wouldn’t buy again as I really can’t face the thought of the stuff in my mouth again.
The mouthwash was pleasant enough but at nearly £8 a bottle, I doubt it’s worth the price. There are other, less expensive and just as effective rinses out there.
The Oral Spray was the best of the range and I would say that I would buy this again but whether it’s any better than cheaper, similar products, I couldn’t say.
Worth the money? Probably not but I’m hanging onto my Retardex Spray to be on the safe side.

- 24/04/07 The mouth wash is actually more effective when used for longer and definitely the most effective on the market, I would say. It can really shift those bad food smells like garlic and it keeps working right through the night for me (nothing worse than morning breath!) The toothpaste is foul though - I only tried that once! The main thing I like about the mouthwash is that unlike most brands, it doesn't make your mouth sore. |
