Advantages: Meets expectations, economical and smells good

Disadvantages: None that I can think of

*As American as apple pie?*

Better known as a brand in the United States than here in the UK, Right Guard was the first mass produced anti-perspirant when introduced by Gillette in the 1960s. While no longer produced by Gillette, it's one of those products that seems to go from strength to strength and it's still available in a formula not so different from the original variety in the year 2009.

I picked up two cans of this in my local Boots store as part of a BOGOF offer and was pleased by the price, but also confident in the quality of the product thanks to some positive brand recognition.

*Cheap at twice the price*

This anti-perspirant is good value for money, but at a RRP price of £2.40 in Boots it certainly pays to shop around. A quick internet search showed that they also sell it in Superdrug, discounters such as Wilkinson's and online from retailers such as www.chemistdirect.co.uk. As stated, I got mine as part of a multi-buy deal, so ended up paying £1.20 a can. I'm currently very pleased with it and probably wouldn't baulk at paying the full RRP in future.

*3D Protection?*

Apparently this product 'provides three dimensions of protection'. The mathematicians among you will be shocked to see that among 'fights perspiration', 'prevents odour' and 'time released freshness', there's only really two distinct promises, as two and three would appear to be much the same thing. Time released freshness exists, ergo odour is prevented!

As this is a male grooming product this sort of silly branding doesn't come as too much of a surprise. In fact, I'm always suspicious of male toiletries unless they have a silly phrase such as '3D', 'Max' or 'Technology' on the packaging somewhere.

*Mhhhh - locker room fresh*

I used this after showering this morning and my armpits are still smelling great (vain as that sounds). The scent is very hard to place and there's a variety of aromatic ingredients listed among those stated on the back of the can. It's 'manly', pleasing and smells very clean. It hasn't caused any irritation, which is always a good sign (I have quite sensitive skin) and it's alcohol free.

In addition to this, it's a very effective anti-perspirant. I live in a flat with four flights of stairs in it and was left with almost entirely dry underarms after finishing off the hoovering this afternoon.

Great for the price.

*Packaging and branding*

The product comes in a fully recyclable aluminium can (well, bar the spray dispenser). It's an attractive and modern design with metallic reds, blues and silver swishes. All the wording is clear and logically set out and you're not left feeling too overwhelmed by promises after reading.

Summary: A justified classic
