Advantages: Price
Disadvantages: Can get a comparible product for cheaper
I bought myself a little treat at the weekend! Instead of my regular choice of Sainsbury's shave gel for men (retailing at £1.15 for200 ml) I splurged and spent the extra 21p to purchase this product: Sainsbury's Ladies Shave Gel for Sensitive Skin (with added aloe vera, no less!). The product retails at £1.36 and I have to say as yet I have always avoided this product as I resent paying over 15% more for a product just so as it can sit looking pretty in my bathroom.
As far as I can tell there are only a few differences in the product. The packaging, the colour, the scent and the price! As I always use shower gel after I have shaved, the scent is not important to me from the male version of the product as it doesn't stick afterwards.
Let's start with the packaging. It comes in a very attractive, if plain, canister in a mint green colour. It is an aerosol, with a press down dispenser and a rounded push on/pull off lid (transparent, in keeping with colour scheme).
When I went to open the product I pulled off the lid and pushed down very hard on the dispenser to break the seal. It went everywhere! Luckily I was in my bathroom but it did go on my carpet and as it expands to become very foamy it was a pain to clean up.
Once the seal was broke I dispensed some into my palm and applied it with the fingers of my other hand. I noticed that it is originally green in colour and then very quickly foamed up once it had hit the air. This process is sped up when the product is massaged into the skin.
The product has good staying power and sticks to the skin until it is shaved of or rinsed with warm water. The smell is very decidedly of aloe vera and this is quite pleasant. I must say I was very pleased with the results from this product and my skin felt moisturised. However I found it neither inferior nor superior to a product that costs 21p less!
I probably would buy it again, but acknowledge that in doing so I am falling victim to consumerism. At £1.36 the product certainly won't break the bank.
Summary: A fine purchase
