Advantages: Good for skin

Disadvantages: smell, packaging, product itself

***Background***

A number of months ago I opened my mailbox to find a little package from Sainsbury's. What on earth could they be sending me?

When I opened the package I found a sample of Sanex Dermo Purifying Showergel. My first thought was that the small 100ml bottle looked very unattractive. I left it on my table and forgot about it. A couple of weeks ago I decided to take it to the gym with me and give it a go. Now that I used all of it up, I thought I would let you know what I think.

***The product***

My sample came in a rectangular light-blue bottle with rounded edges and contains 100ml of product. The top of the bottle is dark blue and has a pop-up cap. It is really easy to open. The cap is also very secure, so there is very little risk that this bottle will run out in your gym bag or suitcase if you intend to take it with you.

The bottle you can buy in the store is a bigger bottle, containing 500ml of product. It can be purchased at Boots, Superdrug and supermarkets. The average price is about £3. That is not a bad deal, considering that most showergels cost about £2 for a much smaller bottle.

100ml lasted me about 7-10 days, so the store-bought bottle ough to last you one or two months.

The product is supposed to keep your skin healthy, purify and cleanse. It contains natural plant extracts and a natural mineral complex that apparently is found in your body. This complex is supposed to remove impurities of the skin.

The product is completly soap-free, ph balanced and dermotologist approved. It is made in Indonesia.

***My experience***

When I first opened the bottle and took a sniff of the product, I could not smell anything at all. I squeezed out some of the product onto the palm of my hand and was immediately disappointed. The product is completly clear and looks a lot like an ointment you would buy at the pharmacy to put on wounds.

I started massaging the product onto my arms. Since the product is soap-free, it did not lather up much at all. It produced a little bit of a white coating with some bubbles in it. I do not know about you all, but I like a bit of a lather. It makes me feel like the product is actually working.

The thing that bothered me the most about this product was its smell. It smelled a bit musty, a bit like wood and almost a bit too natural for my liking. In fact, it distinctively reminded me of the way a cemetary smells - I think the plant may be myrtle - not very pleasant at all.

After using this showergel, I did not feel very refreshed or cleansed at all, but I decided to use the product up in an attempt to determine whether it would actually help me to healthier skin.

I have now finished the bottle and can tell you that I do not notice any difference to my skin. It has not cleared it or purified it at all.

***The verdirct***

I am not sure how long Sanex expects you to use the product before it brings your skin back to its 'natural condition', but I am not thrilled enough with the product to try it out again.

Would I recommend it to anyone? Not for the average Joe or Josephine, but I do realise that some people have a soap allergy and cannot use normal showergels. If you are one of them, this might be a blessing for you - but I will certainly bury this product in my showergel cemetary along with my Palmolive 'Bottle of slime'.
