Advantages: Good aid to visualising plaque, Easy to use

Disadvantages: Leaves you with a red/blue mouth

Disclosing tablets work by dyeing plaque either blue or red. Because they dye all bacteria and your mouth contains a lot of "friendly" bacteria the tongue and gums also get dyed. You don't need to clean these off.

Bacteria in plaque cause the most damage where the tooth meets the gum (ie. at the base of the crown of the tooth).

Use the tablets AFTER brushing and make a note of where the dye is left ( the areas that haven't been cleaned as well). Usual areas are the inside of the back teeth and bhind the front teeth especially the lowers.

Clean these off with the toothbrush. Next time you brush your teeth pay special attention to these areas (but do not neglect other areas) and everytime you use the tablets you should see a reduction in the number of areas you are missing.

It is a good idea to have a mental note of where you usually miss while brushin your teeth so that you pay attention to them.

hOW DO YOU TELL IF ITS WORKING?

A general indicator is bleeding gums... as you clean your teeth effectively they will bleed less and less. They may also look less reddened and swollen... although this is difficult to see at the back of the mouth.

I'd recommend using the tablets for about a week and then (provided there has been improvement) use one tablet a week just to make sure you aren't missing any areas.

And another thing... use them at night if you don't want to go to work with a red/blue tongue.

SAFETY:
You shouldn't swallow the tablets whole as its pointless. They aren't toxic... but may turn your stool funky colours.
They are OK to use on children... but use half a tablet... smaller mouths = less teeth = less areas to dye
