Advantages: Helps sort out sensitive teeth, protects against acid erosion, hardens tooth enamel, tastes nice
Disadvantages: Tends to cost a little more than other toothpastes.
A few months ago I started to experience sensitive teeth. I had never had problems in the past so was anxious to sort out the sensitivity (especially as I'm now without a dentist due to mine retiring!). I decided to change my toothpaste and went for the Sensodyne range as they say their toothpastes are "specially formulated for people with sensitive teeth".
I was happy using the Sensodyne Mint toothpaste, but when I saw Sensodyne Pronamel Daily Toothpaste in the shop I decided to give it ago. My reasons? Well, as well as helping with sensitive teeth it says that it helps protect against acid erosion (which is good because I drink fizzy pop and at weekends drinks like cider or malibu & coke - all very acidy!), helps harden tooth enamel and contains fluoride for cavity protection.
Sensodyne Pronamel Daily Toothpaste is used just like any other toothpaste... Put some on your toothbrush, then brush your teeth! The tube does state that you should consult your dentist before use by children who are under 12 years of age (I'm guessing this is due to the fluoride conent, but I'm not sure). Children who are 6 and under should only use a pea-sized amount and be supervised when brushed to ensure they spit it out rather than swallow the toothpaste, but again this tends to be advised with any toothpaste. (There is also a Sensodyne Pronamel for Children toothpaste, so it may be better to get this one for the kids).
Sensodyne Pronamel comes in a 75ml tube which keeps for 12 months, but to be honest I can't see why you'd need the tube open for 12 months as I use mine 2-3 times a day (recommended use is 2-4 times a day). The tube is made rfom some kind of soft plastic and so it is easy to get the toothpaste out of the tube without the need to roll up the tube like the ones that are made of aluminium. Even when there's very little toothpaste left in the tube, I don't struggle to get it out. The lid of the tube is wide, which enables you to stand it up rather than lay it on it's side.
I find that the Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste has a pearl-like look to it, rather than the white of other toothpastes, and seems softer than other toothpastes I've used. As with other toothpastes, it has a minty kind of taste to it, but isn't overally minty and I think it tastes quite nice. It isn't harsh and I find that it doesn't burn at all (like some toothpastes can do if you've got a sensitive mouth).
I do find that the Sensodyne toothpastes tend to cost a bit more than other toothpastes, but if you look around you can find it cheaper in some shops. I have seen Sesnsodyne Pronamel for over £3, but Boots currently sells it at £2.99 (and it's in their 3 for 2 offer).
Does it do the job? Well, I haven't a clue if it really is hardening the enamel on my teeth or protecting against acid erosion, but I do know that my teeth are no longer sensitive. So I do believe it's doing the job it's supposed to and I would certainly recommend people try it, especially if they have sensitive teeth.
Summary: A nice toothpastes which does what is says on the tube!
