oldschool toothpaste! (Signal Toothpaste)

I was in my local Tesco express and needed to buy some toothpaste, I find when you go to a smaller outlet the variety of products are very limited and often have to buy the expensive leading brand products. Then I came accross Signal, now I think I do vividly remember using this as a child as I remember the red and white stripes but don't often see this brand in the shops and don't think to buy it.


The reason I was drawn to this product was because of the price, i think it was about 99p whereas they only had another choice of colgate and it was one of those pump ones but double the price. Now call me tight but I refuse to pay extra because its a pump toothpaste to me this is just an pointless gimmick.


I did buy the signal ( credit crunch and all ) but was pleasantly surprised by it:

Firstly the cost I thought was great value for a 100ml size tube.

secondly I thought the packaging was attractive looking in white with blue and red and had plenty of consumer information it. But at the same time maybe a little out dated as I think the packaging was like this when I was younger. I googled it ( sad I know ) and signal has actually been around for 40 years worldwide! I was thinking after and I decided that maybe they are trying to be all retro! Like with most toothpaste I do think that the cardboard outter packaging is a bit pointless. The tube inside was easy to open and easy to squeeze the toothpaste out so there is in my opinion no need for pump toothpaste.



Thirdly the taste of the toothpaste wasn't too strong, call me wet but I really don't like toothpastes that are to strong as they almost feel like they are burning my mouth. My daughter whose six loves it as its red and white stripes and its mild tasting as nomally she won't use our toothpaste and has to have a childs seperate toothpaste so I thought bargin I don't have to buy two.


signal has flouride in it which protects against decay and strengthens tooth enamel.


Although it has good points there are some negative ones:

Firstly it doesn't have all the protection which some of the leading brands have like whitening ( which I like ) but I suppose you can't have it all.

Secondly as it has a milder taste I found that it didn't keep my mouth tasting as fresh as the other brands I use which are quite strong and minty tasting, and i find if I don't always use mouthwash my mouth still tastes fresh, so you could call it false economy. As it tastes milder do you find yourself using more of it? Also do they say the worse it tastes the better its doing? or is that something to do with medicine? anyway I will stop waffling.

Another negative point is that even though I got this from my local Tesco express I was unable to buy it when I went to do my grocery shopping online in tesco which I found quite odd, so its obviously not a widely used toothpaste. This would discourage me to buy it again as when I do my weekly shopping online I like to get all of it in the same place so unless like the other week when I ran out ( which we normally don't ) I probably won't buy it again.

All in all I think the toothpaste was extremely good value for the price but wouldn't desperately go out my way to buy it as there are other toothpastes which I have used in the past which are of equal value and more easily accessible, although it served a great purpose.

Summary: good value wouln't go out of my way to buy it
