Advantages: Delicious Smell, Great Exfoliant & Lovely Sensation.
Disadvantages: Hot feeling doesn't last long enough.
Since I've moved into my own house I've had to make major cut backs on my spending, a few months ago I think I used to devote one review each week to a new beauty product I'd acquired but since I've moved out this has decreased dramatically. I visited Boots last week for the first time in at least a fortnight and decided to treat myself to a reasonably priced product or two. After browsing at Clinique and coming to the conclusion that my budget couldn't quite stretch to more than one product here I decided to move onto the cheaper ranges. I finally ended up at the Soap and Glory section and as they had a promotion on I decided to spend my money here. Soap and Glory is a range of beauty and skin care products that has only recently been introduced in England, this time last year I'd never even heard of it. The range is very focused on the female market and boasts a range of products including body and facial scrubs, body moisturisers, hand creams and shower gels too. More recently the range has moved into the beauty arena and now offers a range of facial moisturisers, perfume and toners. The products all have a rather 1950's feel to the packaging as well as having rather humorous and unique names, similar to the Benefit make up range. The products are currently stocked in Boots and Harvey Nichols.
The scrub that I'm reviewing is called "Some Like It Hot" which is just one example of the brilliant and creative names the marketing team at Soap and Glory have come up with. It comes in a pearl coloured plastic tube which stands upright on a candy pink colour; this pink colour is typical of the Soap and Glory range and seems to be their trademark colour. The word "Hot" is illuminated on the packaging by being in a larger font and a pink colour and this is what initially caught my eye. There is also a "Warning" sign on the packaging, presumably to entice you to buy it further with the claim that it's too hot to handle almost. There are also further claims on the packaging that do make me giggle including "This scrub gets quite toasty when you rub it" and "It's the most exciting thing I've had in my shower in months." Presumably these are all marketing slogans which attempt to make you buy the product but to me they just make me giggle really. They do certainly make the range quite unique as you don't find these sorts of marketing tricks with any other ranges on the skin care counters at Boots. Overall the packaging is really eye catching and it did make me pick up the tube while browsing in Boots. It's practical too as the tube stands upright on the lid meaning when you're reaching the end there's no need to squeeze!
The product is dispensed through the pink flip open lid, I can't stand lids that require you to screw them on or off while in the bath so this one is ideal for me. The scrub itself is a light pink in colour, similar to a MacDonald's strawberry milkshake, and you can clearly see the exfoliating beads which are quite dark and large too. There's a lovely sweet smell to the scrub as well, it's slightly perfumed and it does remind me of strawberry Nesquik - the powder you can mix with milk to give it a strawberry flavour. The scrub itself is much runnier than the previous Soap and Glory scrubs that I've tried; they always tended to be more like a gel when they were dispensed but this one seems to have the consistency of a body lotion. Now it's advertised as a body softening thermal scrub which did lead me to believe there would be some sort of heat release involved when it was applied to the skin so as I dispensed some into my hand in the bath last week I was almost nervous! The tube recommends you squeeze a plum sized blob of the product onto your hand and then quickly massage it onto damp or wet skin. You can use this on all areas of your body although it is recommended for particularly dry or stubborn skin areas. I thought I'd start off with it on my arms and legs as they hadn't been exfoliated for a while and just see how I got on...
So there I was in the bath, holding a blob of the rather runny Some Like It Hot scrub in my hand where you could clearly see the little black and white grains, a mixture of sand grains and two sugars which are both used to exfoliate the skin. In addition to this the product contains macadamia oil which is an emollient meaning it's ideal for dry skin and it is also absorbed very quickly into the skin too. As if that wasn't enough it also contains calendula oil which not only calms and soothes the skin but is also used to treat bruises, veins and wounds. I applied it to my skin with some trepidation and found it spread very well to cover a large area with the same strawberry candy floss scent being given off. After only a second or two I felt it begin to warm on my skin until it actually felt hot - not painfully or unpleasantly hot though. This warm feeling lasted about twenty seconds in total before it cooled off but it created a lovely sensation on my skin while I could clearly feel the exfoliating grains doing their job too. As I applied more and more of the product to cover all my body it felt really nice, like I was having some sort of thermal massage even and the aroma that was given off was delicious. I didn't feel that the scrub became too hot at any time and I would say don't let the thermal aspect of it put you off at all, it's great!
As for the after effects well it was really easy to wash off and I didn't feel the need to use any shower gel or soap after it as I felt thoroughly clean. Once I'd dried myself off I found my skin still retained the lovely scent which is common to most Soap and Glory products, but it also felt really moisturised and soft too. This feeling lasted through the night and I could even smell the scent very faintly the next morning. They do recommend that you use a moisturiser after you've used this product but I didn't feel the need to, since using it for the first time I have followed it with a moisturiser and have found this makes the results last longer. They recommend you use the scrub a couple of times a week, I've only used mine three times so far but my skin does feel permanently softer and in a better condition that before I started using this. I've used hardly any of my tube so far and imagine it will last me for a couple of months although this will vary on how often you use it and how much of it you use too. I'd really recommend this product to anyone, it's slightly more exciting and interesting than your typical exfoliater and I really like the thermal aspect of it as it makes it unique. Whether or not the thermal aspect actually has any additional beneficial properties I'm not sure but it certainly feels like it's doing some good when it's heating my skin!
The Some Like It Hot body scrub has certainly worked well for me and I know one of my friends have tried it who actually suffers from dry skin and she said it's one of the best products she's found for getting rid of her dry skin painlessly. I'd give the product full stars for its cute yet still practical packaging, full stars for its imaginative and unique name, full stars for its appearance and aroma and lastly, full stars for the job it does as well on your skin. This product is currently priced at £7.50 for a 200ml tube in Boots stores although I managed to pick mine up when there was a third off all Soap and Glory products which made it a bit of a bargain. Soap and Glory regularly have money off offers or three for two offers on so I'd keep an eye out if you are looking to invest in some to make it a bit more of a bargain. I'd certainly buy it again, even if I had to pay full price, and when I compared the price to other exfoliaters it really wasn't that much expensive at all. I'll certainly be buying this for some of my friends for Christmas as a little additional present as I know they'll love it as much as me. I'd give this five out of five stars personally although I do wish the warming feature lasted a little longer! So next time you're looking for a treat, and obviously if you like it hot too, then remember check this one out - you won't be disappointed!
Thanks for reading.
