Soap & Glory Feel the Knead
Advantages: Nice scent, exfoliating, makes a decent soap
Disadvantages: Useless against cellulite, wears down easily
I'm a massive fan of the brand Soap & Glory. Started in 2006 with the aim of helping women pamper themselves without 'spending an arm and a leg just to moisturise one', the retro pink and black & white bottles and packages are a familiar fixture on the shelves of Boots and Harvey Nichols. They're also available online from retailers like ASOS. The stated aim may not be completely accurate, as the products are often more expensive than brands like Dove or Radox, but most of them are high quality.
I obtained the Feel the Knead Massage Soap on a 3 for 2 offer at Boots, though it normally retails for just over £5. It is part of the Soap & Glory Spa range, which is a subsection of the brand producing particularly refreshing products. Like other products in the range, it comes in a bright blue box. Feel the Knead is described as a super invigorating spa massage soap. It has exfoliating bamboo beads, seaweed suds and essential oils of cacao and carouba (I admit I have no idea what these are). The product also contains two different kinds of seaweed as well as caffeine extract. The scent is described as a "mesmerising" blend of mint, thyme, chocolate, vanilla and musk. I must admit I originally thought this product was a plastic massage product when looking at it from afar - it was only when I started to investigate more closely that I realised it was soap!
This product is designed to get rid of cellulite. Using it to massage your thighs is supposed to stimulate fluid movement and drainage to reduce the appearance of lumpy thighs (the packet also states you can use it to massage the knots out of your neck, but I didn't try this!).
Inside the box is a largish round soap with several 'knobbly bits' on. The minty-chocolate-herby smell was present and I wasn't sure what to make of this, as it was rather unusual and I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. To use the soap, I waited until I was in the shower and used the soap to rub my thighs vigorously. The soap felt slightly scratchy, which I put down to the exfoliating bamboo beads, although this wasn't painful. The whole sensation wasn't unpleasant - it just felt like I was giving my thighs a massage.
Unfortunately, the suspicions I had when I found out that this product was soap and not a piece of massage equipment were proved right. The soap lathered up very well - not a good thing in this instance - and after a week and a half the knobbly bits had all worn down. Even if using it does make a difference to cellulite, it's hardly going to be a marked difference after such a short time (I couldn't see one, but this is hardly to be expected).
I was able to continue to use the product as a normal soap for several weeks afterwards, and actually quite enjoyed this as the rather odd scent grew on me and I found it very refreshing - it certainly helped to wake me up in the morning. As previously mentioned, it lathered up very well and neither did it irritate or dry out my skin.
I'm going to give Feel the Knead a rather generous two stars because it did do a good job as an ordinary soap. However, I can't recommend it for the purpose for which it is intended - it is pretty useless against cellulite in all honesty, and I won't be repurchasing!
