Advantages: Doesn't sting, doesn't flake, dries reasonably quick, good price

Disadvantages: Perhaps the fragrance could be a little more noticable

Now, normally I'm a girl who likes the smell and feel of a squirt or two from a body spray, mainly because they give me and other consumers a wider variety of fragrances to choose from. However, as nice as a body spray is, they don't always stop me from perspiring, especially in this warm weather, and they do tend to give me a big ouch factor after one has shaved ones pits. So with the warmer weather slowly getting warmer, I'm afraid my dread locks under my arms have to go, well I don't want to stick the room out, and as much as smelly pits reduce queuing up times at the check out in Tesco's, I still hate the stench and the feel of sweaty pits, so it's off with the locks.

So being the freshly shaven, skin flint that I am I decided to find a roll-on that was cheap, smelt nice, not too sticky and kept sweaty pits at bay. So with shaving season well under way the real test for me was whether or not it was going to sting like crap applying it after shaving.

Now like most of my purchases I went for price, yep; told you I was tight, and this one seemed to be the cheapest branded roll-on that I could find, costing £1.29 for 50 ml's. Another reason after price was the brand "Colgate-Palmolive", I have always found Palmolive products to be of exceptional value, excellent quality, good variety and above all non irritable to my mildly sensitive skin. So what you can call a well established trusted brand that our family tend to use very often for household cleaning, dental hygiene and for personal cleaning.

Colgate-Palmolive Soft & Gentle Cool Cotton Anti-perspirant Roll-on
---------------------------------------------- -----------------------------

The deodorant as mentioned before comes in a 50 ml roll-on form, but don't let the size fool you. Unlike sprays, with it being a roll-on you don't need to use as much to apply directly to the chosen body parts, because it co
ncentrates on the one area, where sprays tend to get around 60% of the deodorant where you want it and the rest evaporating into thin air. So in this case size isn't really important guys, you can do a lot with this 3 inches ;o) provided you use it right of course.

*Packaging
------------

There is not really anything to exciting to say about the packaging or presentation. The packaging lacks a certain amount of appeal and if it was presentation that some consumers would be looking at first then I'm afraid to say this one couldn't even give it away, more un-interesting. The shape of the bottle is average and out dated, sporting it's classic, common and original form. It's white, yep, so not a great deal of imagination or inspiration when into the design of the packaging. The labelling and details are plain and ordinary, basic design, usual kind of details and information, i.e. size, ingredients (makes it sound edible), directions for application and contact details, but was surprised not to see warnings about safety of this somehow entering your eyes or mouth, or directions in case of such occurrences. So if looks alone and info provided on a product is a major buying factor then I really don't think this one would really appeal to you.

*So Does It Stink or Make You Stink?
-----------------------------------------

The "Cool Cotton" fragranced roll-on deodorant is what I would call more then average in this product type but not by much. For me personally I like a deodorant that smells enough to help you remember you have already applied it, but this one is light on fragrance, it doesn't strike out very much at all, but is a pleasant fragrance for those who like just a hint of fragrance. I don't mind wearing a subtle bouquet fragrance rolled on my pits, all I have to do is roll as normal but just add a touch of body spray to me (avoiding my
shaven pits) if ever I do feel like having that freshly sprayed feeling for the best part of the day, so all in all a pleasant touch of bouquet to slightly linger on my pits.

Despite the lack of invigorating fragrance of this particular one from the range available, it did keep offensive odours surrounding the air around me, I am very impressed with it's guarding against smelly body odour, and it just goes to show that you don't have to be chocking on the smell of your deodorant for it to be able to defend your body of that nasty, offensive body odour our body producing time and time again. I am naturally quite a sweaty type of person, and when I perspire and forget to apply deordorant or apply using cheap and ineffective deodorant, the smell can be what I would call very offensive, but luckily this one has put a stop to those days now, for me it has been spot on in tackling body odour and perspiration.

*So Does It Feel All Yucky, Sticky?
-------------------------------------

Part of the reason why it has been a while since using my previous roll-ons has been the feel of it after application. Very often I found it felt tacky, like one of my kids have shoved a previously sucked lolly in my pits, and anyone who has ever had sticky anything from sweets know how horrible it feels, so it was a big step going back to a roll-on after all this time.

Before I started using this I kind of expected the worse, it's not like much is likely to change in the feel of these types of deodorants, so I was pleasantly surprised when all it felt was a little damp, and come on girls even feeling damp in the right places feels nice ;o), but what was even more surprising was that it only took just under a minute to feel dry, a big thumbs up from me on that point.

Do I Still Need To Keep Dreaming Of A White Christmas?
---------------------------------------------- ----
------------

Well with this one it appears I do need to keep dreaming of a white Christmas because my pits aren't going to produce any snow storms using this one. I have had loads of very embarrassing moments from the dreaded snow storm originating from my pits, and trust me it can happen when you least want it to. Remarkably after applying the roll-on and despite the feeling of moistness, I didn't once suffer from flaking or the dreaded chalky white marks on my clothes that some deodorants have inflicted upon me in the past, I have to say on this point I was and still am impressed.

The Shaving Test
-------------------

Of course the real test for any ladies deodorant is the shaving test and for those wondering what the hell I'm banging on about when I mention the shaving test. Well what I mean is those occasions where you shave your arm pits, but you are in a rush, so with out thinking, you get out of the bath, grab your deodorant then spray, roll, smooth over, squirt (what ever takes your fancy really) deodorant, then you get the most raging, stinging, burning, throbbing pain imaginable happens as you suddenly realise from the shock of the pain taking over your entire body, that you have only just finished shaving your arm pits! Not nice is it? Personally I find this pain far worse than child birth, but luckily doesn't last as long : o) Unfortunately for me I have experienced many occasions where I so mindlessly not thought about the consequences of applying deodorant to your pits not long after shaving, it really isn't a pleasurable thing to go through, I would rather grow dreadlocks then have to put up with the agonising pain of combining deodorants with freshly shaved pits. So I went for this one a roll-on, not something I tend to buy often (probably because back when I used them last they felt all sticky, and sticky pits is not nice), but was worth a pop at it none the less.

So dying to free my pits of my locks, and to get some fresh air flowing in there, I set off for a bath, in the evening of my purchase, shaved in the normal manner, dried myself, and then proceeded to take a 50/50 chance of hopping around the living room in total torturous pain, by tipping bottle upside down, rolling under my arms, and then waiting for it to dry before I got dressed, or the start of the most raving pain. So I waited, then waited some more, did a bit more waiting and ....................... Nothing! Not the even slightest hint of any pain that I have suffered with many times before. Like the name suggest "Soft and gentle" and so far that is what it has been, this one really does live up to it's label, which is something you don't find all too often.

Score 5/5

Overall
---------

Overall, not a bad deodorant at all, where it lacks in any immediate appeal, it does make up for its plain and basic approach. The name is "Soft & Gentle" and that's just what it is, not often a product lives up well to its name but this one does in a couple of ways, the fragrance : soft, delicate, floral, the feel: a little moist but leaves your skin feeling soft, skin irritation: probably the most highly recommended points to this product is the way I can shave and apply as soon as I am out of the bath, so far it has never failed to keep deodorant/shaving related pain at bay.
