Advantages: great colour, widely available
Disadvantages: takes a while to apply, cost, smell
I am what my friends call a fake tan 'expert', not because I am ace at applying it etc but because I have tried practically every brand available.
A year ago I bought and tried the St Tropez pump action tinted lotion. I followed the instructions exfoliated and moisturised using other St Tropez products and I was not happy with the results. Firstly I am quite pale and the tan turned out WAY too dark for me. Secondly it smelt very strongly of that fake tan smell. Thirdly it had taken me AGES to apply. However it did last a long time and did not streak which I suppose are bonuses.
But this year I bought and tried the St Tropez whipped bronze mousse and am sticking with it! It applies quicker and easier than the lotion with a faster drying time. It is also not as dark and therefore suitable for my pale skin. You exfoliate and moisturize as usual, then apply the tinted mousse wearing plastic gloves. At first it looked a bit streaky just after application but when it was still tacky to the touch I GENTLY buffed my skin where it was patchy with a dry cloth. I went to bed still a bit apprenhensive. When I woke up I hopped into the shower and gently washed off the guide colour not using any shower gel. Then I moisturized again revealing an even, natural looking, NOT orange tan.
It is a bit pricey though at around £18 but worth it I'd say as it lasted about 7 days. I have also used the 120ml bottle several times now and have still got some product left so it goes quite a long way which could justify the price. I'd recommend the mousse to those people who want a hassle free tan that is not too dark. I also found this fake tan very easy to maintain.
Other fake tan tips:
When you buy a fake tan don't buy a bottle that looks faded or dusty, fake tans 'go off' after about a year (depending on the make) and can change if placed in direct sunlight/exposed to extreme temperatures.
If you are looking for a cheap fake tan that works I recommend L'Oreal sublime bronze spray. It gives a natural golden colour and is moisturizing to the skin. It is also widely available.
If you want a perfect fake tan for a special occasion I would reccommend an airbrush tan done by a beauty therapist. These tans ususally turn out much better than one you'd do at home. A su-do airbrush tan lasts 7 days and can cost between £15-£25 depending on where you go. I had one done for my mum's wedding, all the bridesmaids and the bride went and it was a really fun, girly thing to enjoy!
Summary: The mousse gives a lighter, more natural colour and is easier to apply.
