Advantages: Pleasant odour, dry underarms. No nasty side affects

Disadvantages: Slightly Expensive

According to The Concise Oxford Dictionary, an Anti-Perspirant is "a substance applied to the skin to prevent or reduce perspiration". A deodorant, on the other hand, is "a substance sprayed or rubbed onto the body or sprayed into the air to remove or conceal unpleasant smells".

It is a common mistake for people to believe their deodorant has antiperspirant properties. A true deodorant does what it says on the tin - it de-odorises, it covers smells, but it does not stop you sweating! Most antiperspirants, however, also act as a deodorant. In other words, they reduce perspiration and they smell nice! Sure Original comes into this category.

I've been using Sure 24hr Intensive Original for more years than I can count (I was never good at Maths) and it definitely does the business for me. There was a time when I trialled various other brands, such as Right Guard for instance, but I found that they either smelled liked crap, were ineffective or brought me out in a rash. Sure is none of these things. It smells great, is effective and is kind to my skin. So let's have a look at it shall we?

***** What's in the Tin? *****

Sure is produced by Unilever. It comes in a pressurised tin containing numerous unheard of ingredients. It is pH balanced and contains no alcohol (this is probably a good thing, because I already contain way too much alcohol - it oozes from every pore!). The tin itself is silver in colour with the Sure "tick" logo and the words "Sure" in black and "original" in red. On the reverse side is a list of ingredients, cautions, directions and Customer Services information. According to its own "blurb" it is designed for Men, giving 24 hour protection which contains an "ultra-effective formula", "specific odour fighting ingredients", "fresh masculine fragrance" and is "dermatological tested". Of course, I'm a bloke so all that means absolutely diddly squat to me! It's nicely topped off with an opaque plastic lid.

***** Cautions *****

Yes, it's Extremely Flammable. Not recommended for lighting and using as a flame thrower. There are the usual warnings not to spray near eyes or face or on sore or broken skin. In addition, it has a "Solvent Abuse" warning.

***** Directions for Use *****

You're kidding, right? Oh well, if I must. Hold can in one hand and with the other detach lid from top. Shake well. Press down firmly on nozzle whilst holding can 15 centimetres from underarm. This bit always gets me, because I've tried but really can't hold the tape measure in place at the same time as spraying! This is obviously a two person job or….just guess.

***** Cost *****

A 250 ml aerosol costs £2.38 in Tesco, but it is also available in 150 ml tins at a cost of £1.76. Now I do find this quite expensive when you compare it to, say, Adidas or Right Guard, but then I believe it to be a better product. It is cheaper than Lynx, which I don't rate anyway. In any case I normally buy a few when there's a special offer on such as BOGOF.

***** The Product Test *****

Well, finally managed to guess the 15cm measurement and sprayed in vaguely the right direction to the underarms. It's got a good manly "perfumy" smell. You know, not poofy or girlie, but crisp and clean. After a day of hard work, it's still wearing fine. As I sometimes miss my direction when spraying, some of it gets to other areas of the body. My fiancée often asks me what lovely aftershave I'm wearing (which is a bit thick since I don't wear aftershave) only to find out that it's just Sure Original. Additionally, I've never noticed it leave any white residue on clothing. So it's long lasting and great smelling. What more can you want? …..great tasting too, according to my chick, but hey that's another story……….

***** Verdict *****

Personally, this is the only Anti-perspirant (deodorant) that I'll use. OK, sometimes I might get adventurous and try Sure Sport or some other obnoxious "flavour", but Sure Original works superb and smells great. My Fiancée loves it and I love it and I couldn't give a monkeys fart for what anyone else thinks. Go on, get out there and buy a can. If you don't like it you can always send it to me (for free). Quality.
