Advantages: Cheap, essential for kids, smells good, cleans fast

Disadvantages: Is bacteria really all bad?

Like a lot of parents, the need for constant cleaning of small hands on a regular basis is enough to drive any mere mortal to despair. So there was great interest when we first discovered this miracle substance. I believe in the not to distant past we first saw the stuff while visiting an open farm. Of course there they were in large anonymous pump action tubs with warnings to pregnant ladies about touching sheep. Since that day my quest to find the stuff began.

I think that Carex first introduced the gel in the current form, and I snapped them up in abundance. As with almost everything these days though, the supermarkets' own brands soon starting spouting up, hence the Tesco Antibacterial hand gel.

Great tip coming up soon!

Now the Tesco 50ml bottle does contain additional information about the ingredients etc, but you have to lift a little 'peel here' flap at the bottom of the label to find it. Apart from Alcohol there are a number of ingredients in there which should be studied before use, especially if you have hands of a sensitive nature.

Okay, the important bit, how does it handle? Well the little flip top lid is easy enough to open, not as fast as the Carex pump action, but I guess Tesco's cost savers found an opportunity here. A gentle squeeze will release one or two drops of the clear gel onto the hand. Now a brisk rub of both hands together working the gel all over back and front will produce a cold sensation (as the alcohol evaporates) this also doubles as an easy indication of how much coverage you have achieved. There is a faint but pleasant scent from the gel which will linger for some time after the liquid has gone. The great thing about this gel is that it is small and so very portable, essential for travelling with kids, renowned for their ability to pick up bacteria in all forms, at will. We scatter them all over the house and find them an absolute essential in our kids hygiene.

Now I hate to give you a link to the Daily Mail newspaper, but if we reach beyond the somewhat biased political opinions then there is a very interesting little article hidden away on their website which I stumbled upon. It is carried out on a number of cleaning agents targeting the effectiveness of bacteria in general. Suffice to say that Tesco does very well scoring 4/5; the Carex brand only got 2! And now for the Great Tip!

Remember that flip top lid that is not quite as good as the Carex one? Well you can buy one bottle of Carex with posh pump action, and once you have used it all then buy a bottle of Tesco hand gel and simply swap over the tops. Yes they do fit perfectly. Therefore from then on you get all the benefit of the cheaper and just as good (if not better according to the DM) Tesco product with the superior pump action dispenser. At 47 pence for a bottle, you just can't go wrong.

Summary: A great product to beat the leading brand hands down
