Advantages: Great price, yummy fragrance, closer shave & softer legs
Disadvantages: Runnier than others
I usually use shower gel for shaving my legs, but do tend to get through quite a lot of it for this reason. In a money saving attempt, rather than opt for a cheaper shower gel, I decided to try this shaving gel.
I had used similar products in the past, and knew that a little goes a long way with this stuff as you only need to squirt a tiny globule onto your hand and it turns into a huge mass of foam. I hadn't bought any shaving gel for a while though, as I remember it being quite expensive for something that I then classed as unnecessary when there is shower gel in the bathroom already. However, when I came across this Tesco version for just £1 on a recent shopping trip, I thought I'd give it a try.
** Packaging **
The shaving gel comes in a brightly coloured purple/pink 200ml can, and it really does stand out against other similar products which are mostly light blue or aqua in colour. The design is simple, displaying only the necessary information as is often the case with supermarket branded products, with just the product name and a small image of a few berries on the front against a plain patterned background. The reverse of the can tells us that this shaving gel is 'enriched with moisturisers' and 'its luscious creamy lather helps your razor glide over the skin smoothly', and also gives the ingredients and all the usual aerosol warnings.
** Fragrance **
From the name, colour and design, you can guess straight away that it is going to have a fruity berry fragrance to it, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite so strong. It's not an unpleasant smell, but is perhaps a slightly odd choice given the fact that most products of this kind usually tend to be given various floral fragrances. It is a very strong, sweet fragrance that smells good enough to drink, and actually resembles the smell of chewy blackcurrant sweets. After using the gel, the scent does linger on your skin for a while, and is actually much more pleasant and subtle at this stage.
** Using the product **
The directions for use on the back of the can state that you should 'Wet skin and dispense required amount onto fingertips. Gently massage onto the skin to produce a rich lather. Shave. Rinse well after use.' I would recommend, however, cupping your hand tightly before squirting the required amount into it. Unlike other shaving gels I have tried, which tend to be of an almost jelly-like consistency before they foam up, this product is incredibly runny. You can't be at all heavy handed when dispensing this one, as it will go everywhere. Instead, just tentatively apply a small amount of pressure on the 'squirty thing' at the top of the can, allowing a very small amount to ooze out into your hand; a little really does go a long way. I also find it best to smooth it over my leg quite quickly, allowing it to transform into its foam form rapidly before it slides off. As soon as it has changed to the white foam, it does stay put, but when it is still in the gel form it is so runny that it will just slide off.
Perhaps I am making the process sound like more of an ordeal than it really is, but the point I am trying to make is that although this product is more awkward to use than more expensive versions, these minor difficulties can be easily overcome, and by getting used to it you can make it last a lot longer. I would much rather buy this product for £1, and be a little more careful using it, than spend almost 3 times that amount on another brand just because it's thicker.
I get through quite a lot of disposable razors, as I don't feel as though I have achieved a close shave unless I am using a new razor. But this gel allowed more uses than usual as a close shave was achieved every time. The razor seems to glide over my legs more smoothly than it did when I was using shower gel. Also, I didn't feel the need to use moisturiser afterwards, as the gel had left my legs feeling softer than usual.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this shaving gel. It does what it says on the can, is much cheaper than other versions, smells yummy, and lasts a long time (saving me a lot of money in shower gel!).
Summary: Highly recommended cheaper option
