Advantages: Natural Ingredients, Actually Work, Smell Nice, hydrate Skin

Disadvantages: Expensive, Shops Are Tiny

Since the age of three I have suffered with eczema which varies from itchy to extremely uncomfortable, depending of the amount of physical activity I do, temperature, clothes I wear and shower products I use. For years my mum trekked me off to the doctors to receive ointments that while targeting the problem momentarily only left my skin drier and flakier than before and with harsh ingredients I often found that I would get mild allergic reactions to them. After years of trying creams, butters, oils, ointments and god knows what else I admitted to myself that the fight against eczema was one that I could win and waved the white flag. It wasn’t until I bought a house with my wife and found every spare inch covered in Body Shop products that I discovered Coco butter Body Butter, a rich, creamy skin moisturiser that smells faintly of vanilla. Instantly after years of scratching, bleeding and flaking my skin finally felt hydrated, less taut, appeared to be significantly less red and had a healthy look that I hadn’t seen in years. Eventually after a few days of using it before I went to bed I noticed a huge improvement both in texture, feel and look of my skin, even on the most eczema ridden spots (back of the legs, arms, back of neck and even between toes) and I observed a drastic (and blissful) reduction in the amount of itching.

Coco Body Butter comes in a round cream container that contains 200ml (6.9oz and 196g) of Body butter and has a very attractive picture of coca beans on the top which displays the famous Body shop logo an the title of the product in large, easy to read letters. I like this packaging because it would probably fit in with any kind of bathroom colour scheme with its non-chalant magnolia and brown, it also has a pleasing rustic appearance that fits in with The Body Shop’s image and is very unisex so can appeal to both sexes. The label boasts ‘Cocoa butter to moisturise, Shea butter to hydrate and Soya bean oil to protect’ and the cream does have a slightly nutty scent with subtle hints of warm vanilla and chocolate which while not my favourite fragrance is warming and fairly pleasant. It also helps that it isn’t overtly feminine and not all that distinguishable after a few minutes so it is suitable to wear at work and wont perfume your office and all of your clothes. Inside the actual butter is firm with a creamy feel and a pale cream colour, when rubbed onto the skin, it absorbs very rapidly without leaving a greasy residue and does instantly moisturise dry areas.-this is just my experience, if like me you do suffer from severe ezcema or skin problems then I would always suggest trying it on a patch of skin first-

Body Butter really has had a positive impact on my life that I couldn’t have predicted and certainly didn’t expect. For the first time in my life I do actually feel ‘comfortable’ in my own skin and the product has added to my quality of life more significantly than I could have imagined, I have found that my body has become more resilient to shampoos and shower gels, at winter my skin doesn’t become dry and itchy and at summer my eczema isn’t sore and red. Also I can actually go into a swimming pool without being in pain for weeks after, which makes holidays and the gym a lot more fun! At ten pound for a two hundred ml it is expensive –there are smaller tubs who’s prices go down accordingly- but I have personally found that one of these pots lasts a surprisingly long time, I use it every single day and find that a pot lasts me around six weeks. I think that because of the unbeatable results and longevity of the butter it is actually good vale for money.

Because of my pleasing experience with the Coco version of The Body Shop’s range of Body Butters I decided to venture into one of their impossibly small shops to look at other ‘flavours’ my favourite being without a doubt the Mango version. This has a vibrant orange container and is pale yellow in colour with a stunning, happy scent that instantly brightens your mood and perks up the senses. It contains mango seed oil which is famous for moisturising the skin and also includes sweet almond oil –rich in essential fatty acids, which helps the restore the moisture barrier of the skin, thus restoring suppleness and smoothness- and cocoa butter. Other favourites of mine include Hemp –hemp seed oil has an unusually high level of essential fatty acids- which is the one I use most regularly as it is probably the most suitable for men with its extremely faint scent, simple packages and nice green colour. Coconut which smells just like a big ol’ Bounty it contains Caprylic –a derivative of Coconut oil that moisturises- and has a nice brown tub, Nut which includes Brazilian nut oil, Papaya which contains high levels of Papaya seed oil and Sesame.

I don’t think that it is a massive overstatement when I say that The Body Shop’s Range of Body Butter has changed my life, with crisp presentation, wonderful fragrances and natural ingredients they really are good all over moisturisers.

The Body Shop Website: www.thebodyshopinternational.com –there is lots of information on ingredients, the charity work the Body Shop do, locations of the stores and all with really clean and professional presentation.’

Summary: An Effective all over moisturiser
