Advantages: Interesting scent, scent is noticeable, nice texture, melts into skin, moisturises and softens skin

Disadvantages: Expensive at full price

I am quite a fan of the Body Shop body butters and always have a few on the go. At last count I had seven tubs of this stuff in various varieties in my room (only open a couple at a time though or else they could go off before I use it all up!). This candied ginger one is a body butter which was a Christmas special edition scent and I picked it up for £3 in the Body Shop sale a few months ago.

The Body Shop body butters come in sturdy round plastic tubs with screw top lids. The tubs are all different colours corresponding to the scent, and the candied ginger is a sort of orange and gold colour, as pictured above. The body butters contain 200 ml or you can sometimes get small travel ones at 50 ml but I have not ever seen the candied ginger in this smaller tub.

Normally the body butters state on the lid which skin type they are intended for, for example normal, normal to dry, dry and so on. The candied ginger does not actually state the skin type and so I therefore always assumed it is for normal skin. It is definitely closer in consistency to the other "normal" body butters and is not as rich as the "dry" body butters.

This candied ginger body butter is a dark creamy or pale peachy colour. The butter is quite solid, but when you scoop a bit out it warms up on contact with skin and becomes very maleable, making it very easy to rub into the skin and it absorbs quickly. It does leave a bit of greasiness if you use a large amount, but this only lasts a few minutes. Despite not being as rich as the "dry skin" body butters, the moisturisation of this product is excellent. It feels very light and refreshing but makes the skin feel smooth, healthy, hydrated and cared for. I especially like to use it on areas such as elbows, ankles and heels as these are the areas which are more prone to dryness and get a great result from this body butter. I also use a bit of it all over my body sometimes before bed. It is effective and a little goes a long way. I prefer to use this in the evening rather than in the mornings, as it is not as quick to use and absorb as a light lotion. I think body butters feel a bit more luxorious so I like to use them in the evening to relax for bed.

The scent of this one is quite unusual. When I first tried it I didn't think I really liked it, as it is very strong and quite spicy. It has a strong, recognisable ginger scent but quite spicy and sweet. It is quite a noticeable fragrance as a few times when I had just used this my family commented on it. However, I don't think it lingers for hours on the skin. I can notice it for an hour or so, then it seems to die down. Although I was a bit unsure about this scent at first, I have actually grown to like it. I find it quite a warm and comforting scent. This was actually brought out as one of the Christmas scents but I think it is fine all year. It does not seem particularly Christmassy to me, although maybe it is more wintery than summery.

The full price is £12.50 for the 200 ml tub but I never buy the body butters at that price.

I would recommend it if you like the scent. This one is not available in Body Shop stores at the moment but it might come back again at Christmas or in a sale - try and smell it before buying if you can, just because it is a bit of an unusual one. I am just coming to the end of my tub now and it is not one which I would be desperate to buy again if given the option of all the different scents, but if I saw it reduced to £3 again then I would be tempted at that price.

Summary: Good quality like all the Body Shop butters, but scent is an acquired taste
