I bought this Cranberry Joy Shimmer Lotion the other day at the Body Shop as I was stocking up due to having a voucher for money off and the fact the sale is on. This lotion is currently 3 pounds (sorry no pound sign on this keyboard!) or 2.70 for those with a Love Your Body card, who get 10% discount.
Cranberry Joy is one of the seasonal Christmas scents which was brought out a few years ago in the same range along with Spiced Vanilla and Candied Ginger. I have had a few Cranberry Joy items before such as the body butter, hand cream and scrub, and I really like this scent, so when I saw this lotion on sale I picked it up without too much thought - as it happens I really should have actually read the bottle, as I thought it was a normal body lotion and did not realise there was such a shimmer element to it! I love the Spiced Vanilla lotion which comes in the same bottle as this, which is why I just thought this was a cranberry version of that lotion.
The bottle contains 250 ml and it is a tall, thin red plastic bottle with a pump dispenser. I generally really like the pump dispenser format as I find it easy and hygenic, and it discourages me from overusing too much lotion, as it only gives a fairly small amount with each pump.
When I first pumped some of this out into my hand I really got a shock! The shimmer is immediately very noticeable, and the lotion appears quite perlescent and almost glittery. It is a kind of whitey silvery colour. the consistency is not watery, but not rich - I would say it is a light, mildly firm lotion. It is easy to spread it over the skin and rub it in. The lotion and moisture is absorbed very quickly, but the shimmer effect is left behind on the skin. I have found it can be quite easy to over do this and it is by no means an all over body lotion for every day use, as you will be seen sparkling from afar! A little goes a long way or else you will look extremely glittery and shimmery. I don't think it is particularly moisturising as it is quite light, and the Spiced Vanilla lotion moisturises my skin much better. I will have to just use this if I ever want to add a bit of sparkle somewhere, but I won't really use it as a regular body lotion as in my opinion it is just not suited to that.
The shimmer can rub off onto your clothes, which is a bit annoying, and you definitely need to wash your hands after applying or else your palms look totally covered in shimmer, so it is not one to quickly apply and go!
The scent is very pleasant as it is similar to the rest of the Cranberry Joy range. It is a fruity, berry scent but not overly sweet and has a slightly tangy edge to it.
It is difficult to know how many stars to give, as personally I was a bit disappointed, but that is because it is not what I thought I was buying and not what I was bargaining for! I'm sure someone who consciously bought it for the shimmer would be pleased with it. I will give it three stars as the scent is nice, the shimmer is good if that is what you want, and it is absorbed quite quickly, but two stars are lost due to it rubbing off on clothes and not doing that great a job of actually moisturising and softening skin, as it is more shimmer than moisture in my opinion.
~~~~~~~~ The Body Shop Cranberry Shimmer Lotion ~~~~~~~~
My mum received a Body Shop cranberry gift set a few Christmases ago, amongst it was this shimmer body lotion. She gave it to me as she wasn't keen on the shimmer element, and I happily squirreled it away in my cupboard and forgot about it until the next Christmas. I was wearing a low cut top for a Christmas night out and when i found this in the cupboard I decided to have a go, thinking a shimmer over the cleavage might just go down a treat.
~~~~~~~~ Packaging & availability ~~~~~~~~
The bottle I have is just 125ml, and as I say was part of a set. This is not currently available on The Body Shop website, but a customer review dated February this year states that it is only available during the festive period. I can also see that the packaging has been updated from the bottle I have. The one I have is a dark red semi transparent bottle with a gold coloured flip up cap; when you flip this up the small dispensing hole is revealed. The label is also suitably festive, in shades of red and gold simply with the product info on it. Nothing to get excited about really, but the colours are very befitting of seasonal joy.
~~~~~~~~ Appearance, texture and scent ~~~~~~~~
The cream itself is a pearlescent white colour, and you can clearly see it shimmering in the light. This bodes well for a noticeable bit of glitz on the skin! It is quite thick; if you put a blob on your skin it does not run or drip at all. Saying that, it feels light and soft and when you start to rub it in you can see how smooth it is too.
It smells very very lovely and although it is a strong scent it is not overpowering. It is sweet but I don't find it sickly or cloying, just fruity and warm. It really does put me in mind of Christmas! You can clearly smell the cranberry, but also a slightly muskier, heady warmth too. It is not all out sweetness and the dominating feeling for me is definitely one of comforting warmth rather than crisp, fruity freshness (which I associate with being 'cool', whether that's technically correct or not I don't know!).
~~~~~~~~ Using it & results ~~~~~~~~
Dispensing the lotion is very easy - simply flip the lid, invert the bottle and squeeze gently. As I said the lotion is quite thick so although care should be taken you don't have to worry about it pouring out of the bottle at high speed. It spreads over the skin beautifully and is absorbed almost instantly, leaving my skin feeling soft, smooth and supple; not at all greasy or sticky.
The scent is transferred to the skin and sticks around for a very long time. It is highly noticeable so I would say you should avoid any other scents that may clash. I applied some to my hand to refresh my memory for this review, and after washing a draining board-full of dishes a couple of hours later, the scent was still there! Most of the shimmer had gone down the drain with the dishwater but not the fragrance.
The shimmer is really beautiful, not too in your face but definitely noticeable. The whole lotion glitters so you get a really dense and even coverage of tiny light reflecting bits all over the skin it is applied to. Be warned though, this does transfer to anything it touches/rubs against, so make sure you wash your hands after applying it so you don't get it where you don't want it. It washes out of clothing no problem at all though and when you want to remove it from your skin (to avoid a glittery bed), your normal body wash will shift it and facial/make up removing wipes will as well.
~~~~~~~~ Important ingredients & other info ~~~~~~~~
This does have a rather long ingredients list, not at all completely natural either. I am not going to copy it all over but those I feel are worth note are sunflower, shea butter (ethically sourced), cranberry obviously and unfortunately, alcohol.
This will keep for 12 months after opening but I have to say, mine has been open almost 2 years and has not suffered at all. As with all my lotions and potions though, I keep it in a cool dark cupboard not in the warm steamy bathroom.
~~~~~~~~ Overall opinion ~~~~~~~~
I think this is a really lovely lotion, but I fully understand why my mum didn't want it! It is rather glitzy and even though the glittery bits are small I would say this is not a subtle sheen, but not quite a sparkling eruption! The smell is gorgeous though and teamed with a similar matching perfume it will see you through the night with bells on. Not only that but your skin will feel beautiful too.
When I used it the first time, it did indeed give my décolletage a festive sparkle but this was the only place I applied it, and sparingly at that. I have also used minuscule amounts on my brow bone to act as a sort of highlighter and I was really pleased with the results. I applied it with a cotton bud though as you really do not need much at all. It is quite easy to go overboard (in my opinion, I don't like piles of glitter on myself ) since the shimmer given is so dense.
I can't comment on the price, but I can say that it lasts a long time since not much is needed per application. It is a lovely scent, beautiful effect and just an all round nice product for a special occasion.
I bought this Cranberry Joy Shimmer Lotion from my local Body Shop a few weeks ago - simply as it was on sale!
I was attending a wedding that week so I decided to give it a go! My skin was so soft after using this, and the shimmery tones definately made my legs look more attractive! I used this on my arms and a small amount on my chest bone area too, to highlight my collar bone. It worked too! It gave me a really nice and subtle shimmer which was very flattering! The smell was gorgeous, too!
I have used the Bodyshop body butters before and loved them, and this was equally as good. Overall I would say that this is perfect for a special occassion or a night out to use along with a pretty dress and to make you stand out that little bit more! Enjoy!
The Body Shop cranberry joy shimmer lotion
I initially purchased this Body Shop cranberry joy shimmer lotion as a bit of an impulse, I was buying some other items online and I noticed that this was in the sale. This year I have been a huge fan of the cranberry joy range, which isn't really cranberry in fragrance but more of a beautiful fruity berry scent with added cranberry oil. A shimmer lotion isn't really something that usually appeals to be but given that it was less than half price and I assumed it would also have the same gorgeous scent as my other cranberry joy products I decided to pop it into my online basket and give it a try.
One of the very first things that I noticed about this lotion when I pumped a small amount out was the smell, which was surprisingly and refreshingly strong more so than the body butter from the same range. I think of all the cranberry joy products I have tried this has the strongest and most pronounced scent. However, don't expect a cranberry scent as I have already mentioned this is a berry fragranced product despite the name of cranberry joy.
The lotion has an appealing rich shimmering pearlescent quality about it, which is all wrapped up in a creamy coloured lotion. I did expect something that was perhaps pinky or reddish in nature due to it being from the cranberry joy range, but I wasn't disappointed. The look of it makes you instantly want to rub it onto your skin. The texture and consistency of this lotion is nice, it is actually quite thick. I love some of the other body shop lotions and in particular the Moringa Milk Body Lotion which is very liquidy and I was expecting something similar from this but it is much, much thicker.
The Body Shop don't give any recommendation for which type of skin that this lotion is most suited for, in my opinion this isn't the most moisturising product. If you have dry skin then I doubt that this would do much for you apart from giving you that shimmering shine and nice fragrance. However, that being said it has left my skin feeling soft and moisturised, but then at the moment my skin is in pretty good condition anyway. When I have applied the lotion it doesn't take too long to dry in, but I do tend to leave it a bit longer than I would a body butter before I get changed into my clothes just to make sure the shimmer doesn't rub off on my outfit.
So does this product shine or should that be shimmer? Well, yes. The body shop have done a great job at creating a lotion that is filled with tiny little sparkles, it is noticeable but it doesn't look like you are walking around shimmering. It is subtle enough that you could wear this throughout the day and most people wouldn't even notice. After applying this in the morning it is still noticeable at night time but nothing like it was just after I applied it initially. Also I haven't noticed the shimmer transferring to anything else, it seems to do a pretty good job at staying put on my skin.
The berry fragrance also stays around for a long time and it does begin to settle as the day goes on but when I woke up the next morning after applying this after a bath I could still smell the fragrance on my skin and on my PJ's.
I do like this product and I have and will continue to use the rest of this up, but I doubt that this will be one item that I will buy again. I think that I would have liked this more in my late teens, early twenties as I really don't have that many nights on the town anymore, and I think that this is when most people would wear this to give their skin that extra bit of sparkle and gorgeous scent.
The packaging is slightly different from The Body Shop's usual variety and this comes in a slim bottle rather than the short stubbier ones that I am used to. It also has a pump to release the amount you want. However, sometimes the bottle does slip from my hands while trying to get some out when they are covered in the lotion.
Sadly, I do not think that this Body Shop cranberry joy shimmer lotion is available to buy, unless your store has some sale items left. However, I believe that they bring these products back year after year so it is something to look out for in the next festive period. I paid £3 for this, which I believe makes it fantastic value for money, even at the full price of £8 this is still a nice product.
Despite the fact that this is not a product that I would personally buy again, it has more to do with personal preference than anything to do with the product. I prefer my lotion to be simple rather than shimmery. Therefore, I still think that it deserves a well earned four out of five stars. In my opinion, I think that this is a bit of a novelty product and I believe that it would make a great gift.
