The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter
Advantages: Excellent quality, moisturising, lovely scent
Disadvantages: Expensive at full price
Not content with my Lush collection, I've been buying quite a few toiletries from The Body Shop recently. An advantage to this is that The Body Shop often has special offers on, which Lush rarely does, so I can obtain the products much more cheaply. Having previously tried and enjoyed some items from the Satsuma range, I turned my attention to the body butter and got hold of a smaller 50g tub. This normally costs £5 and the larger 200ml tub is £12.50, but though I can't remember exactly how much I paid, it certainly wasn't the full price!
The body butter comes in a bright orange tub with a label covered in pictures of satsumas. Inside, the butter is a pale orange colour and emanating from it is the delicious fresh scent of satsumas. The smell is very natural and lovely. I never used to like citrus scents, but Lush and The Body Shop between them are converting me! The scent makes the product ideal for use throughout the year: it's fresh and summery, but being a satsuma scent, it also evokes the festive season and those satsumas you get at the bottom of your Christmas stocking (which, I admit, I tend to put back in the fruit bowl when my mam isn't looking!).
The delicious scent of this product derives from the satsuma essential oil contained within. The butter's moisturising properties come from Community Fair Trade shea butter and cocoa butter. The former comes from the all-female Tungteiya Shea Butter Association in northern Ghana. The trade has helped to fund services including medical centres and nursery schools.
Body butters are designed as a more intensive alternative to body lotions, and I don't use this one every day. Rather, I keep it for after my evening shower (I shower in the evening at least twice a week after visiting the gym), and it acts as an intensive moisturiser overnight. I scoop out a little of the body butter and rub it into my skin until absorbed, repeating until my whole body is covered. A little goes a long way, so the product lasts a good amount of time. I am very impressed that, despite being quite thick, the product sinks in really well. I have tried the matching Satsuma Body Lotion and found it to be slightly sticky, but this is not the case with the body butter at all: I can get dressed (or get my pyjamas on) almost straight away after applying.
After use, my skin feels incredibly moisturised, smooth and not at all irritated. The moisturised feeling lasts right up until the next morning, when I have another shower before work. Clearly the body butter does the job it is designed for very well.
In addition to the product's fantastic moisturising properties, the delicious satsuma scent really lasts on the skin too. It remains all evening and is lovely and refreshing. However it's not so strong to be cloying or to stop me going to sleep.
Altogether, I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this body butter. It smells delicious, moisturises extremely well, lasts ages and, provided you get it on special offer or with a discount code (both of which are frequent), it is value for money. Five stars from me.
