Advantages: Convenient, no mess, cheaper than a salon
Disadvantages: Ripping hair from your body is never going to be fun!
After several messy and unsuccessful attempts at waxing a few years ago I gave up and had a professional torture me instead. Up until a couple of months ago I would go for my waxing like a 6 weekly ritual, but due to not having my student loan I have had to think of new ways to save money, and looking through what I spend my £90 waxing expense was the one to be cut back.
I could never shave as I don't like how the hair grows back, I hate the smell and mess of removal cream and epilating scares me! Once I'd spend a fair amount of time researching my options in Boots, I chose the Veet wax strips. They were on offer at just under £5 for 20 wax strips and 4 wipes.
The strips come with 2 stuck together, you rub them inbetween your hands to warm up then pull apart and use each one seperately. Then apply, press down and then the tough bit of pulling them off! I have to mentally prepare myself for that bit as I have a problem of inflicting pain to myself, if someone else is doing it then im fine but when im in control it reminds me of pulling a plaster off...you know you have to do it but just cant!! Keeping the skin taught you have to pull against the direction of hair growth, then once all smooth use the finishing wipes to soothe and remove and wax traces.
I wouldn't do it myself to an area that takes precision waxing such as eyebrows or bikini line as I know i'd mess up and end up looking like an egg with no eyebrows, so I only use the strips on my underarms and legs and leave the rest to the professionals. I found that the strips removed even the shortest of hairs and wasnt TOO painful, and the fact there was no messy pot of wax dribbling all over my bathroom was a bonus too.
The main advantages of using wax for me is that the hair takes several weeks to grow back and even then its finer and flufflier, more like the hair that grew when you was about 10 year old. These strips are so convenient too, pop them in your bag and take abroad or whereever you may feel the need to wax quickly and easily!
Compared to the wax that you heat up then apply with a spatula I found this to be a lot less painful and left my skin looking less raw and lumpy. As with any waxing your skin does go slightly red with little red lumps where the poor little hairs have been ripped from, the wipes didnt really make too much difference but im sure they have a purpose or they wouldnt give them you!
Summary: Perfect if you want smooth legs without paying someone else £30!!!
