Advantages: Kind to skin, leaving it soft and calm.

Disadvantages: Takes a long time to work. Smells chemically. Struggles with thick hair types.

When I recently went shopping I was surprised by the lack of choices when it came to hair removal products. In the major chemist chains Boots and Superdrug and alongside the store's own brand products the shelves were overtaken by the brand 'Veet'. Veet is formally Immac, a name that is a little more familiar to me as being the brand of choice for my mother and big sisters when I was growing up. So I decided to try this although my usual brand is Boots' own.

There are several different hair removal creams and waxing strips on sale from Veet in serveral different guises from pump action bottles to spray on cream. The more high-tech the product the more expensive they are. I decided the plain old squeezy tube would suit me fine. This particular product is especially for sensitive skin types. It is sold in a distinctive blue cardboard box. The cream comes inside a malleable tube. I have had experiences with old tubes drying out and bursting open in the past but the softer plastic material of this tube means it is more squeezable and less likely to split. This range comes in 100ml or 200ml size tubes. I have the 100mls version. It has a screw top which is easy to remove and replace and a large dispenser nozzle.

All detailed information about the product is written on the box. A quick guide to usage is also printed on the tube but it makes sense to keep the box as it has important safety precautions, ingredients and picture illustrations of how to use the product. My tube did not contain an inner information leaflet either so I made sure I kept the outer box. In addition there is also a plastic spatula type applicator included in the pack. This is a fish shaped piece of plastic which is set into a wavy mould. The idea behind it is that you hold the fish-tail end and smooth the cream onto the area to be treated with the fish-head end! Either end of the spatula has a softer, rubbery line of material so that it bends gently into the skin without scratching or hurting.

You can use this cream on legs, bikini line, arms and underarms but NOT on the face or elsewhere on the body. You should apply straight onto dry skin using the supplied spatula. The cream should be left for a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of ten minutes. You can check the progress of the process by wiping away a small area of cream with the spatula to see if the hair comes away. After use, simply rinse the area with warm water.

The cream is thick and sticky and doesn't drip. Veet have tried to mask the strong chemical smell that is common to most hair removal creams with a jasmine and sunflower perfume. However the larger area the cream is used over the worse and stronger the burning chemical stink is! I use this cream primarily on my legs and find it is very easy to spread the cream over the skin. It does get a bit messy with the cream caking on the edge of the spatula though.

I do find this cream to be a much weaker formula than the Boots' own cream that I was previously using. I have to wait the full ten minutes for this to take effect and remove the hair. Even then some of the more coarse hairs hold on fast but are reduced to a strange stringy, elastic material. I have dark thick hair naturally and it seems to struggle with this. A positive for this cream though is that it is very suitable for sensitive skin as it does not hurt, burn or tingle. It also does not leave horrid red, inflamed marks on the skin after you rinse the cream away.

The cream contains a "moisturiser complex" with extracts of aloe vera and vitamin e. I do find that my skin feels soft and velvety after use when this special formula has taken effect. It is a good ending and a nice touch to an otherwise tiresome job! To back this up, the cream is endorsed by the British Skin Foundation who validate the brand's research into skin health.

I would recommend this to anyone who has the time to be able to sit and wait for the cream to take effect. I would also suggest it is a must for those who have had unpleasant reactions to other hair removal creams as this a very gentle formula has never stung or burned my skin.

Summary: A must have hair removal cream for sensitive skins.

I use this sometimes but I really hate the smell! It fills the room up and takes ages to get rid of.
