Advantages: Removes the hair from the root, takes a lot longer to grow back than when you shave.
Disadvantages: A little painful!
A male colleague at work volunteered to have his legs waxed to raise money for comic relief and nominated me to be the one to do the waxing!! Being a man and having very long leg hair I knew that I would have to get a good waxing product to remove the long hairs!!
I took a trip to Tesco to see what was on offer; it was here that I saw the Veet (formerly known as Immac) warm wax jar. It cost £8.95 for a 250ml jar; I thought this would be more effective than the wax strips so decided to purchase this.
The box itself is square and peach in colour with the Veet logo on the top, it also states that is contains invigorating green tea which is supposed to help soothe the legs after the waxing. Inside the box you will find the plastic jar of the wax, 12 fabric strips to remove the hairs, a precision spatula to apply the wax with a temperature indicator and an instruction leaflet. It advises that this jar of wax is sufficient for upto three depilation's of both half legs.
For those not familiar with leg waxing! This jar is basically a jar of wax that you heat up either in warm water or in the microwave, apply to the legs and then use the fabric strips to rip off the hairs from the root! This option is preferable to a lot of women rather than shaving as it leaves a smoother finish and the hairs take longer to grow back and tend to grow back finer.
I was very surprised at how easy this wax jar was to use, as mentioned above, I heated the jar in the microwave for 40 seconds, I firstly had to remove the screw on lid and the foil top of the jar and put it in the microwave without the lid on. Once the 40 seconds was up I then had to stir the wax with the wooden spatula for at least a minute. The most ingenious part of this spatula was that it has a heat sensitive strip on it that told you whether the wax was too hot to apply to the legs. If the wax was too hot the blue strip said no, but if it was the correct temperature it just remained blue with no writing on it.
Once the wax had reached the correct temperature you then apply it to the body part that you wish to wax! This wax can be used on the legs, underarms, bikini line or upper lip. I have only ever used this on legs so will advise how this is done.
Firstly you use the spatula to apply a strip of the warm wax onto the leg from the knee down; you should only apply the wax for the same length of one of the fabric strips. You then stick the fabric strip to the wax by stroking in a downward motion, from the knee towards the ankle. It is very important that you press it down firmly so that it pulls out as much of the hair as possible. Once the strip is firmly stuck down you then remove the strip by pulling the end of the strip in the direction from the ankle to the knee. To remove the strip it is very important that you do it quickly and don't prolong the agony (a bit like pulling a plaster from your knee!!) You should also pull the skin tight at the bottom of the strip, as this also makes it less painful, you should never pull the strip up but keep it as parallel to the skin as possible.
I must admit that I had never used this wax before and was very scared to have to use it for the first time on one of my work colleagues!! But I have to say that I was absolutely amazed at the results it achieved! On the first strip it removed ALL of his leg hair, which, as you can imagine was a lot! His hair was at least 3cm long, so for it to achieve this then it must be am amazing product!! I then went on the remove all the hair on both his legs from the knee down!! After I had finished I felt his legs and was amazed at how smooth they were, this product removed absolutely all the hair and didn't leave any stubble at all.
I became more confident at doing it as the time went on and found this wax very easy to apply and very easy to use. For both his legs I only used half a pot of the wax and half of the fabric strips I took the rest home to try it on myself as I wasn't sure if the experience of waxing myself would be quite so satisfying as waxing somebody else's legs!!!
Once my leg hair had grown slightly I decided to test the wax on my own legs and see if it was as easy to wax yourself as to wax somebody else. I followed the same instructions above to re-heat the wax as this wax can be reheated as many times as needed until it has all gone. I applied the first strip of wax and the fabric strip with great trepidation!! I then pulled off the first strip and it wasn't half as bad as I expected it to be. It did sting a little, as expected but didn't hurt too much at all; I was then able to continue and finished waxing both my legs.
I am very happy with this product and think I may permanently switch from shaving to waxing, I found that the hair on my legs took three weeks to start growing back and was a lot finer than before when they did grow back.
The other thing I found really good about this wax pot was that the wax is water soluble, so once you have finished waxing you can simply rinse it off your legs, which is a pleasant change to the old wax you used to get that used to remain on your legs for hours afterwards! Also, the fabric strips can be washed and re used time and time again.
Summary: It has converted me!

- 01/04/09 I don't think I dare, I've only just recovered from a waxing "incident" that took off the top layer of skin and left me with painful blisters for 2 weeks! |
