Disadvantages: It hurts, but the pain is shortlived.

WAXING LYRICAL

If you were to describe some of the obsessions that human beings develop to another race of beings, some would certainly come out as peculiar. Take for example the female species need to get rid of hair. Such is the obsession, that manufacturers all over the world have come up with different methods, so that a girl is totally confused into thinking that amongst them must be that one illusive product that suits them to a “tee”.

I have been part of this search. I mean, who wants to appear on a beach with hair sticking out of their bikini line ? Well I certainly don't, and as the years change, and fashions change too, bikini lines are getting skimpier, ladies legs are appearing longer, and somehow I don't fit the bill of a natural beauty. My legs are short and stumpy, so the higher the leg line on a bikini, the longer the appearance of my legs seems to be, and people like me need all the help they can get.

In an attempt to look good, I have tried creams, which frankly smell horrible and sometimes sting. I detest them. You wipe them on, wait, then wipe them off with a horrible spatula and make a mess of the plug hole in the bath or shower, and the smell seems to linger in the bathroom for hours.

I've tried an electrolysis pen, and whilst this is superb for facial areas, it doesn't exactly look very elegant if my husband enters the room, as the top of the electrolysis pen actually looks like a vibrator, and I certainly would not wish to give him the impression that I am doing something I shouldn't be. The hours that the machine takes to be effective would certainly mean he would find me at some stage in a position of embarrassment, and let's face it, us girls don't need that kind of spectacle, and I feel that the removal of hair in this area is an extremely private affair.

Shaving is a no go area. I certainly would not attempt to attack private places with a razor and having already experienced it in a hospital environment, remember the stubble that follows so quickly afterwards, making it not an option.

So what are the choices left to me ? Strips don't work when you have extremely dark hair such as I have. They are fiddly and awkward and don't reach those hideaway places. On the other hand, this product turned out to be a good one. I call it my “sufferance” product, because there is no way of getting around the fact that ripping out pubic hair by the roots is painful, but what's pain in the search for beauty ? “If it doesn't hurt, it's not working”, I have heard people say with exercises and suchlike and it certainly is true of this product too.

The product is nicely presented in a little sachet (discretion being the better part of valour here, and you can hide it in the bathroom cupboard easily). What you get is a pot of wax, and believe me this lasts months, spatulas for applying the wax and strips to use for the removal of unwanted hair. It's easy and one of the reasons that I go for this product over others is that although it's a painful experience, it works. It's quick and over in no time, leaves no smell and by goodness your skin feels smooth after using it.

So how does this instrument of torture work ?

You open the wax pot, place it in the microwave, but here be careful. Everyone's microwave is different. Too much heat and not only will you be pulling your hairs out by the roots, but leaving burn marks as well. It's easy to overheat the wax, and the way to tell is to give it half a minute first. I have used this with two different microwaves, and found that each produced different results from the instructions that come with the wax, so have disregarded the instructions because of burns. Touch the top of the wax and see how hot it is. Warm is good, and it doesn't take long for it to cool down if you have overdone the cooking. Wait, don't even attempt to use hot wax. It hurts. I heat mine for half a minute and it is just right, although as stated, you have to find this out for yourself.

Applying the wax.

Because it is being applied to a delicate and not easy to see region, I would suggest the use of a mirror. Apply the wax to the chosen area of removal and cut strips the right size. Apply the strip on top of the wax and rub it in the direction of the hair growth. You will soon know the time factor, and how to do it efficiently, and it only took me one go to get this right.

Ridding yourself of hair.

Having applied both wax and strip, get ready for the shock of your life. Rip the strips in the opposite direction to the hair growth and by goodness this stuff works. One second of pain isn't a big price to pay for perfectly clean lines around your bikini area. It's marvelous stuff.

My thoughts.

I do this about every six weeks. I have dark, strong hair. I have never come across such a quick and easy method of hair removal. Yes, it hurts, but only momentarily. Advantages outweigh disadvantages. Quick, in comparison with all other products available, effective, no smell, and no red skin afterwards. It's a really good product. The instructions are pretty basic and common sense, and it certainly is not a product to leave around as if a child accesses it, even whilst cold, it's pretty messy stuff. I don't like the spatulas and replaced these with some that I bought in a craft shop which are much better. The strips run out as well before the wax does, and I found here that I could buy the same product much more cheaply in a material shop and now have a vast stock.

Marks as a beauty product – efficiency 10/10
accessories that go with it - 5/10 as you will need to buy more.
Odourless - which I like a lot.
Lasting effects : Superb compared with alternatives.

At a price of less than the equivalent of 4 GBP it really is good, lasting value.

Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised that it is worth the pain.

Excellent! A superbly written review on what is, I agree, essentially a private beauty routine! I can't be doing with the modern tendency for women to display themselves without apparent embarrassment when they are doing stuff like this! Even talking about it makes me blush! Your review was interesting and most informative and when I next consider donning a cozzie, I shall look at this product most seriously! Oh! and yes, congrats on winning this comp! Lou x
