Advantages: Quick, Clean and Tidy, Effective
Disadvantages: A small amount of pain
I am probably one of waxings greatest advocates. As an incredibly clumsy person, I tend to cut myself rather severely when I shave my legs and so long ago I decided that any alternative that didn't leave myself and the bathroom covered in blood was better for me. The first time I tried waxing was not actually on my legs. I actually went to a salon to have my eyebrows shaped. I had rung them earlier in the day to ask them if they did eyebrow shaping and they had said yes. I booked a appointment. I must stress that throughout all of this I was under the belief that they still plucked peoples eyebrows. On arrival I was asked to lie on a bed and close my eyes. The next thing I knew there was sticky hot stuff being put on my eyebrows. This was the first indication that my eyebrows were to be waxed - I nearly screamed the place down. In the end though it was actually a very quick and effective way of doing things and was inly painful for a few seconds, the best bit was when the soothing moisturiser was applied - something to look forward to. Shortly after this I decided to be adventurous and risk having my legs done too. My friend came with me and sat in reception waiting for the screams, she was highly disappointed when there were none (my friends are quite disturbing). In addition to having my legs and eyebrows waxed I now also have my armpits and bikini line done too. I have found a salon that does a waxing package that allows you to have all this done for a reasonable price. For those of you that have never been waxed, it basically consists of a therapist applying hot wax to your legs, then sticking a strip of material to the wax and then pulling it off against direction of the hair growth. This may sound rather painful but it is only a short sharp pain and it actually gets less painful if you ahve it done regularly. I have also tried the home kits but have found these to be messy and sometimes down right
dangerous. In one case I bought a roll on wax applicator, which you heat up in the microwave and then roll onto the skin. I heated it up but the lid fell off whilst I tried to roll it on and I ended up with hot wax all over my legs. That was painful! Other attempts at home waxing have ended up with wax all over the place, and various things stuck to my legs. Home waxing is not something I would recommend. I think that waxing is a quick and convenient way of getting rid of unwanted body hair and that the small amount of pain is outweighed by the benefits. There is also something about going to a salon that makes you feel pampered and special. I see it as a bit of a luxury. Go on throw out that razor!

- 25/09/02 Waxing at home is messy, but I wouldn't be comfortable having somebody else do that to my legs, armpits etc... :) Ingrid |
