Avon Skin-So-Soft Original Dry Oil Spray
by MagdaDH
We recently moved onto the west coast of Scotland, straight into the heart of midge-land and although it has been a drier summer than anybody remembers, the midges are still occasionally a nuisance.
We equipped ourselves with a selection of repellents, among them this Avon product that works out the cheapest by volume and is ... also slightly pleasanter to use than some.
Until the arrival of Smidge this was the locals' repellent of choice (it's hard to walk around permanently covered in DEET not least because it destroys many plastics you might touch), and as I said it can be cheaper than others especially ordered online.
It is primarily a dry-skin oil, and the moisturizing effect is one of the bonuses of using it as a repellent. I can't however imagine using it for that purpose alone as I find oils unpleasant on the skin - a bit like Vaseline based lotions for example, especially when rubbed in. But when just sprayed on it feels OK, and certainly doesn't dry the skin out.
It smells like a cheapish perfume or a decent room freshener, not a scent I am keen to wear on my person, but not as bad as to put me off using it.
As far as repellent action, it does appear to work. I am not sure if it's the scent (it does contain citronella) or the fact that a layer of oil acts as a barrier: midges are small and kind of drown in the oil if you can imagine it, but it certainly has some effect - I get less bitten with this stuff than with nothing.
However, it's greasy on application and doesn't last that long, you need to reapply.
In summary, it's not a bad repellent and it's not a dreadful moisturiser, but not particularly brilliant at either of these functions. If you can't stand the smell or consistency of other repellents, it's a good choice and I would also put it on the face and hands more readily than DEET or even smidge (both of these taste very bitter even if a tiny amounts gets on your lips).
For casual use it's also a good value for money (you can get it for less than £4 a bottle on eBay) but if you are outside long enough to need to reapply, you will need to do it more often than with smidge or DEET. Read the complete review |

Avon Clearskin Immediate Response Blemish Cleanser
by kayleighmcharris
I'm not typically one of those girls who will have a beauty routine and who consistently looks after their skin well. However there came a point where my skin was getting to the state that I couldn't handle, being on a budget I ordered this product from the sale booklet in the Avon catalogue a long with a few other products, I paid £1.50 ... for the product but I think it retails at around £3-4 at full price.
The idea of the product is to use it daily and it will reduce and remove any blemishes on your skin and just leave it feeling and looking a whole lot healthier. My expectations of the product was that it probably wouldn't work very well and if it did it would take a few weeks to start showing visible effects.
The packaging of the product looked nice enough, there is a fresh blue theme that looks encouraging to those who don't really feel comfortable using products like this and the flip cap makes it easy to keep clean and minimises spillages and leaking. To apply the product I usually put a reasonable amount of it onto my hand and then apply it to my face in a circular motion until my face is covered in a thin layer of the blue gel. The gel is fairly firm and not at all runny which made it easier to apply.
Whilst the gel is on my face I feel a cold tingling feeling, it's not a painful feeling but it does feel as if the product is in fact doing something to my skin. after 2-3 minutes I rinse the gel off my face which didn't turn out to be as hard as I thought it would be, the product removes in just a few wipes from a wet flannel or using your hands over the sink.
The results of the product are quite impressive, there was a visible reduction in spots and redness and it also left my skin looking moisturised and not oily. There were still parts of my face which weren't improved so much however for £1.50 any improvements were great.
Overall this product can be bought cheaply if yo wait for the right time and can offer great results for those who suffer with less than perfect skin and would like to bring it back to life a little. I would definately recommend this at the sale price and the retail price seeing as other products on the market that don't work so well can go up to triple the price of this one!
