Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
by lights84 I've heard a lot about palm oil recently and the horrid impact it is having on the rainforest in Borneo, the people native to the land and the animals that need the habitat to live in, including the orang-utan and the Sumatran tiger. So, I decided to reduce how much palm oil I consume. It would make sense to cut it out completely of ... course but it's in SO many products that it's virtually impossible to do that, so I'm basically trying to do what I can. One way of reducing my palm oil use is by cutting down on processed foods which almost always contain vegetable oil, which is actually usually palm oil as companies don't have to say what type of veg oil it is. This is where coconut oil comes in. I started out using it instead of margarine on bread and toast, as it has a very mild, light flavour and is also very creamy a lot like butter, and with added health benefits! Despite the name of the product, the coconut is not actually a nut and is therefore suitable for nut allergy sufferers, so it can be a good way of getting healthy fats and oils in your diet in place of nuts, if you can't eat nuts. The oil is high in good fats, omegas and EPA and DHA. I don't worry about getting too many fats in my diet as I don't eat dairy products, and anyway coconut oil contains healthy fat not nasty trans fats or anything like that. I have been eating it for a few months now and I can certainly attest to feeling a lot healthier in myself. It's not often that one can say that a food product has revolutionised the way they live, but I am going to make this bold claim about coconut oil! I eat it as a snack spread on rice cakes, in cooking, cakes, and even as a moisturiser on my face, as it feels nice on my skin and absorbs quickly. A friend of mine suggested using it on my baby's cradle cap so I have been doing that for about a week now and the flaky skin has significantly reduced already. Coconoil cost me £5.95 for a 250g jar from Amazon.com, and although you might think that is quite pricey for what is essentially a small tub, it does spread very far. You only need a small amount for whatever purpose you are using it for - I should know, because I use it for so many things!! I also like that the jar is recyclable and not made of plastic, which everything seems to be nowadays (my local council does not recycle plastic). Another good thing is that Coconoil is organic, so I am confident giving my baby girl a spoonful of it now and again, as she absolutely loves it and it adds a bit of fat to her diet, as she can be a very fussy eater sometimes and I don't want her to lose weight because of a phase. The oil also contains lauric acid which is apparently very similar to breastmilk, which would explain why she likes it so much! The coconut oil melts easily, which I discovered when we had a spurt of hot weather recently and it got quite mushy in the jar. It solidified when the weather cooled down again though. Otherwise it melts easily in your hands if you leave it for a moment after taking it out of the jar, so it easy to scoop out with a spoon or your hands. There is also some evidence that coconut oil strengthens immunity, which I can't testify to exactly because although I have certainly become healthier since using it, this could also be due to cutting down significantly on processed foods. As with any other oil, if you eat a lot of this it may make you feel a bit queasy, but it is certainly less thick/greasy than other types of oil, including olive which is what I usually use in my kitchen. Though Coconoil is slowly taking over there, because it is so versatile and doesn't leave an aftertaste like olive oil can, and because it spreads quite far it actually costs the same if not less than virgin olive oil does. All in oil, I highly recommend this product to everyone, because it can improve your health, reduce rainforest destruction if used in place of certain kinds of spreads, make your skin feel nicer, and it tastes lovely too! You can easily add it to your diet, and it requires very little work to do so. That's my kind of 'superfood'! Read the complete review |

Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
by fudgey05 Following a disastrous haircut/bleaching job, I have been desperately scouring the net in the search of products that can restore my hair to it's former glory and/or help my hair to grow five inches overnight. While I have been unable to find a product, apart from hair extensions, which can aid this miraculous growth, I have ... stumbled across an array of products which have significantly helped my damaged tresses. Following one google search, I discovered a number of sites/blogs all raving about the benefits of coconut oil. I had never heard about this product before, but I was desperate so I decided to give it a whirl. I found the product on Amazon, and it cost nearly £9 for a generous 460g. I decided to purchase the virgin coconut oil as I read somewhere that it is most effective in it's most pure form. I was quite surprised to read on the packaging that it can also be used for cooking purposes, I assume you would use it in replacement of more common oils such as olive or sunflower, although I have not experimented with this as yet! The oil is in a solid form at room temperature, and so I find it easier to melt it a little before using it. In order to do this I place the entire tub in warm water until it melts a little. Following a little internet research it appears that you can use the oil in a number of different ways. Some seem to use it as a conditioner, while others leave it in their hair in the place of a serum. I have found that my hair is far too thin and greasy to leave in my hair, and I have to make sure all residue is removed to avoid the chip fat look! I apply a small amount to dry hair and slowly rub it into the roots before smoothing it down the hair. I then leave it in my hair for at least half an hour, and once a week I like to leave it in overnight. There is obvously a coconut fragrance to the oil, however it is not offensive in any way and does not leave an unpleasant smell in my hair. To remove the oil I just wash my hair as normal with shampoo then apply a tiny amount of conditioner, too much conditioner and it's too oily. I have to warn that a couple of times I didn't wash it out properly, and the only way to rectify this is to wash it again. I have been using this product for four months and I still have half a tub left, so it offers excellent value for money. I would probably have purchased at least three deep conditioning treatments by this point. After using the oil, and washing it out properly, my hair feels light and healthy. In addition, I have had a couple of compliments the day after I have used it regarding how shiny my hair looks. I can't state that this product is 100% responsible for improving the health of my hair as I have been using a couple of different products, but my hair definately feels better after using it as a treatment and that is good enough for me! I would estimate that this product will last about 5-6months if you use it once or twice a week, which is excellent value for money. I will definately repurchase when it runs out. I would recommend this product for anyone who has dry/damaged hair, or anyone who wants to give their hair a bit of a treat. Read the complete review |

Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
by soundsprettygood After reading about the effects of pure virgin coconut oil on hair, i decided to look for some on the internet, i searched in google for some virgin coconut oil and this came up. Virgin coconut oil just means that it is 100% pure coconut oil with nothing added to it, making it completely natural. The website (coconoil.co.uk) has both ... organic and virgin coconut oil, the organic comes in 3 different tube sizes, between the prices of £6.50 for the 250g tub, and £90 for a 10kg container....so a fair option of choices depending on how much you want and what you are looking to spend. I went for the virgin coconut oil, only one size is available here, a 460g tub for £8.99, there are bulk buying options which work out a bit less per tub if you decide you would rather stock up. This coconut oil can be used in cooking as a much more healthy alternative to any other cooking oil, but it can also be used on the skin and hair, i haven't personally tried it on the skin, but its meant to keep it young and moisturised from what i can gather (since i had done a fair bit of reading before deciding to try it out) the 460g tub was a pretty decent size, and i found that coconut oil is one of those things that not only requires you use very minimal amounts, but it seems completely necessary that you only use a little bit, too much and i found my hair would become flat, lank and looked a tad Greasy. This meant that i felt it was pretty good value, i was particularly impressed with the fact that is was free post and packaging, that always makes me feel better about buying anything online. I have tried im cooking and i find its a lovely alternative to other oils, adds a very small and subtle amount of flavour and is very easy to use. The oil is solid at room temperature and requires heating up to melt, so to just spoon a small amount in a frying pan means threes no chance of spilling any, and spilt oil i always find is a bit of a pain to try and clean up. The main reason i purchased this was for my hair, im constantly searching for a miracle cure to make my hair soft and shiny, but more importantly, to attempt to fix the dramatic damage. I found this difficult to work with and have read all sorts of things for how best to use in your hair, and this left me confused, and thus i had to try a few different things before i got it right, but when i got it right the effects were simply amazing. I found this difficult to use for hair, as obviously i had to melt it first, and so you will need another small container in which you can spoon a little out and put this container half submerged in a sink of hot water, it does not take long to melt, but i found that this seemed a lot more effort than if you were to simply buy a cream or mask, or serum for the hair, which would obviously be ready to just put right from the container to your hair. The first time i used this i tried putting a small amount on th dry hair, as if it were a serum, but i would not advise this, as it left my hair very greasy, the way no other serum would. I then tried it as a sleep in mask, this some what worked, but it made sleeping uncomfortable as i had to put a towel down over my pillow to avoid making a mess, the towel was nothing like my silk sheets to sleep on and this irritated me, there is also the fact that it seems to make the towel smell odd, which isn't exactly ideal, the effects were reasonably nice, i did notice a little more shine and a tad more manageability, but it just wasn't the miraculous results i had been expecting, in fact, it wasn't even close. I did not use this product for a while due to the fact that it seemed more effort than it was worth, but then i decided recently to try again, this time on wet hair, i put a very small amount on my hair just after i got out the shower, only on the ends as oil on your roots will always make it seem greasy, and i towel dried my hair, this time i was extremely happy with the results, it seemed to protect against the damage of my heat products, and my hair looked healthy, and despite the fact i knew secretly that it was not healthy, i still felt very happy about this miraculous mirage or shiny healthy glossy hair. I think that everyone's hair is different and some will find a different way of using this oil will work best for them, and some may find they don't like it at all, but then you can always try it with your skin, or use it up to cook with if you come to that conclusion. In the tub the smell was extremely weak, i was hardly able to smell it, but once my hair was dry it had a subtle but still some how clear smell of coconut, i am very happy that i tried this product, despite all the trial and error efforts involved, the product is well worth the money due to the tiny amounts you need to use.....the only problem i had was that if you accidentally put too much in the hair, the only way to rectify your mistake is to re-wash....always a nightmare.
