About a month ago, I switched to Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal moisturiser from my old 'oil free' moisturiser. I always like to leave a few weeks before reviewing cosmetics so I can be sure of its impact, but boy have I been impressed with this one.
I took the decision to switch to a natural moisturiser after getting fed up with the fake ingredients found in so many high street brands. My skin is normal to oily, so I always opt for an 'oil free' option to minimise shine and so as not to cause breakouts. I shopped around for quite a while, but in the end opted for Avalon based on the price, trust in the brand (my girlfriend uses quite a few of their products) and the positive reviews already floating around about the product.
The first thing you notice is the smell - which is AMAZING. Its fresh, zingy and really fruity - but not in any way synthetic. It smells like real fruit oils, which, when you read the ingredients, you realise are actually a feature in this product. Its made with a base of Aloe Vera (which is really soothing) and contains organic lemon, orange and bergamot oil, as well as moisturising cocoa and shea butter. There are no parabens, and certainly no alcohol.
But on to the important part - the results! After a month of using the product, my skin feels smoother and is noticeably brighter. I very rarely have oily days now, which were a problem in the past, and my breakouts have subsided. I haven't changed anything else in my skin care routine, so I'm putting all of the credit in the hands of this moisturiser. Whilst its very light, it packs enough power to stop any outbreaks of dry skin - it really feels like this product cares about the user.
Price wise, I paid £7.99 for a 57g pot. Considering I have paid upwards of £40 for moisturisers in the past with results nowhere near as good, this price thrilled me. I'm not even half way through the pot which represents fantastic value for money. I will certainly be buying again - when I finally have to!

Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Facial Cream
Over the years I have tried many facial moisturisers and some have disappointed and some have impressed, but one of my all time favourites is The Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Facial Cream, which I only discovered in the late Autumn of 2011. I have a friend to thank for this as she recommended it to me.
I purchase mine from Amazon where it retails for £12.14 for 50mls with free delivery. If Avalon is a new make to you their website can be found at www.avalonorganics.com.
In recent years I have migrated away from traditional brands and over to more natural companies. This has been intentional- to use products that are simple and as far as possible free from chemicals, and also to purchase from those who operate ethically and with respect to animals. Avalon is an American brand who has environmentally friendly policies and demonstrates a respect for nature. They don't use parabens or synthetic ingredients and all their products are organic.
I have tried their lemon shower gel before which is lovely, but apart from that I am just beginning my journey into their world, and in discovering this new moisture cream I am sure I will be enlarging my collection in the near future.
A Look At The Product
The cream is presented in a box, and inside the packaging the jar is a beautiful orange and Tuscan yellow colour which is lovely. The cream is said to be nourishing and antioxidant intensive with sun ageing defence, and is intended to be applied twice daily to the face and neck after cleansing. It also claims to be firming and repairing with a skin smoothing lipo-filling complex, which also imparts luminosity and is anti-ageing. The vitamin C is intended to improve clarity, tone and texture. Also in this cream are vitamin E, borage, flax and sweet almond oils, as well as melatonin, white tea and lemon bioflavanoids.
So it certainly contains a lot of things as most facial products do, but all of them are natural, and it claims to produce results, so how did it live up to these claims and what was my experience?
Removing the lid I have to say that the fragrance has the most beautiful scent of fresh oranges, and I think of all the face creams I have ever purchased this is my all time favourite scent. It is fresh and suggests Spring to me, and takes me back in my mind to Spanish holidays when the orange groves have been in blossom. I don't think Avalon could improve at all with this aspect of the product. They use essential sweet orange oil to create this fragrance and it is delightful.
The consistency is ideal. Unlike the Lavera coQ10 cream I recently reviewed which had a consistency that was too runny this is a perfect texture, it is a soft but firmer off white cream. It is much easier to handle than the Lavera, and easier to transport on trips and holiday too, as the jar is made from plastic.
It is easy to apply to the skin and it leaves no greasy residue but leaves skin really soft and nourished. This time of year with harsh weather and central heating my skin needs a lot of moisture, and given my age (51) I have also noticed that my skin requires slightly more attention than in my younger days.
The cream is perfect to apply under make-up, and here is an important point - it doesn't leave residue so I have found I can apply foundation straight away. This is important as sometimes I need to be somewhere, and don't have the time to wait for moisturisers to sink into the skin.
I have had no adverse reactions to the cream at all so I think if you have sensitive skin this could be a possibility.
I think this product is suitable for all ages and all skin types from normal to dry, as it is not specifically aimed at one target purchaser. Avalon also make a sister product designed for normal to oily skin which is oil free, and I would say this probably is aimed at the younger market. This is called the Avalon Organics Vitamin C Rejuvenating Oil-Free Moisturiser.
As to the claims let's look at them - I have found that my skin feels soft after use, and I have discerned a new brightness and luminosity which was not apparent with my previous moisturiser. That is the total benefit I have gained, and I guess time will tell if it has anti-ageing properties that go beyond this. Vitamin C is reputed to be excellent for fading age spots, but as I don't have these yet I can't comment on this. I would hope that the antioxidant blend may guard against sun and age damage over the years to come, as it certainly contains some well thought of ingredients with excellent properties.
The Vitamin C range also contains a cleanser, toner and serum, and I am planning to collect these gradually as my older products come to an end, as I have been really impressed with this first purchase.
I would purchase this just for the fragrance alone, but the fact that it is natural and organic, and certainly seems to have brightened my skin somewhat means that I am delighted to recommend this product. I always apply highlighting lotion after my make-up as I like to have that dewy glow to my skin rather than a matte look, and this moisturiser has certainly helped to brighten my skin all over.
I think it is especially good if you are someone who has normal to dry skin. This does tend to be those of maturing years but not necessarily exclusively so.
One negative aspect is that although the product has sun ageing defence it does not have an SPF, so it is important to wear sunscreen if you are going to be outside for any length of time. I have also discovered that Avalon also make a bottle of a similar Vitamin C lotion, which can be used on the face and the body which has similar ingredients, and this does have an SPF 15 so I will purchase this for my next holiday.
I am delighted with this moisturiser. With twice daily applications it has lasted me for almost 2 months and I have no hesitation in re-purchasing this and many of the related products as I love this product so much. It is just so refreshing in the morning to apply a moisturising cream that has this beautiful aroma of fresh oranges, and to be able to apply make-up and go is an added bonus. I love the organic and natural ingredients and the ethical considerations employed by Avalon. Only one negative is the price which is slightly more than I wish I could pay, but then it is part of the ever growing market that is natural, and as more consumers make this ethical choice hopefully the price might come down a little.
