Avène Hydrance Optimal Riche Hydrating Cream
Avène Hydrance Optimale Riche Hydrating Cream is a product made by the company Avène. They have a long history with origins in the Languedoc Rousillon area of France, and the beautiful thermal spring water that is found in the region is used in many of their products.
Until recently their products were quite difficult to purchase within the UK but recently their popularity has grown. Boots now stock their creams, and Escentual.com also sells their range, and is more comprehensive in terms of what they stock, and often have offers and samples so is well worth looking there. The reason I came to purchase this cream was because I needed to replace another Avène moisturiser that I use, that being the lighter version of this cream, which also has an SPF factor in it which I tend to wear in the summer. However my local Boots only had this cream and I needed it urgently so I decided to try it and I am so glad that I did!
Before going on to talk about the cream I must mention that if you visit www.avene.co.uk you can fill in a questionnaire. This will then be able to diagnose your personal skin needs, and Avène will come up with a recommended programme based on their products for you to use from cleansers through to moisturisers for the day and the night. This website also allows you to register with them, and this should yield some free samples from time to time, as well as the opportunity to store your skin details from the questionnaire and product recommendations for future reference.
All About The Cream
The cream that I am reviewing is called Hydrance Optimale Riche and it is intended to be used by those with dry to very dry skin. It is part of a range of four creams - Light and Riche in both SPF 20 and without.
It is sold in a tube which is presented in a cardboard box, and 40ml retails for £12.15 from Escentual.com. One of the first things I noticed on the box was that it could be used during the day and the night, so I thought it would be ideal for travel especially during the winter. It does not have an SPF so I wouldn't recommend it for use during the daytime in the summer months, unless you are working in an office all day, or wear a foundation with a high sun protection factor over it. Avène do make this in a version that contains an SPF of 20, and for summer wear I would recommend this alternative. I have found it to be perfect for use on long haul air travel to keep skin hydrated during the flight.
All products made by Avène are free from parabens, and are hypo-allergenic and ideal for sensitive skin. This cream when dispensed from the tube appears to be of a fairly solid consistency, but it glides onto the skin effortlessly and soon disperses into a milky soft and creamy film onto the skin that blends effortlessly. It has a delicate and fresh scent but nothing overpowering and certainly no floral undertones.
I love this cream, it is an excellent choice to use under make up and it leaves skin hydrated but not greasy so foundation application is easy. When I have used this at night I have been really impressed by the softening qualities this product has, and the way my skin feels in the morning. It removes any trace of dryness and imparts moisture, and I think it makes my skin look so much fresher and youthful. In my opinion it is ideal for mature skin. Although my skin isn't extremely dry I am 52, and have recently noticed that moisturiser is vital, and I have to use even more than I used to to gain the hydrated complexion that I like to have
I always like to check out reviews over at www.makeupalley.com before buying a product as they can give you a really good idea of how it performs. Their contributors gave the cream 4/5 and 75% would repurchase based on 81 reviews, which I think is testament to the high regard many have for this product. A careful scan of the reviews also showed a consistent theme running through them - that many with acne prone skin reported a decrease in redness, and overall those with sensitive skin were delighted with the results they obtained using this cream with one or two exceptions.
I have also discovered that this makes a fantastic hand cream too so if you are travelling, and not going to be in the sun, or have a favourite foundation with a high protection factor this is an excellent all round moisturiser that would cut down on packing requirements. Being less than 100mls in size it is also perfect to take on board aircraft in carry on luggage.
Is This The Holy Grail Of Moisturisers?
I suppose the question is would this be my go to moisturiser of choice? I have to say that although I love the make Avène, and this variant is of high quality, and is a perfect moisturiser for me, I know that to date I have yet to find anything that I love more than the Avalon Renewal Vitamin C cream which is also paraben free, but has the addition of vitamin C and smells absolutely gorgeous. This product comes in a round pot so is not quite as good for travelling, but it is a beautiful moisturiser again ideal to use both at night and in the day, and again also has no SPF so care is needed in the summer to use a foundation with a high protection factor if you are outdoors. Both this and the Avène Riche retail for around £10.
Do I prefer the Avène Riche over the Avène cream that I was using before it ran out? - that being the Avène Hydrance Optimale UV Light SPF 20 Protective Hydrating Cream- the answer is that for hydrating properties yes I do feel this has the edge over the alternative which is excellent for its sun protection qualities, but is not quite as hydrating as this Riche variant. It is also worth noting that my personal profile on the Avène website recommended the lighter version for me so perhaps I am not a shrivelled old prune just yet!
There are some excellent French moisture creams on the market and they offer excellent alternatives to brands we all know and love. What really appeals to me about this cream is that it hydrates the skin beautifully and is so easy to travel with. I wish it had an SPF factor in it but otherwise it scores top marks for me as being paraben free, and also worth noting is that they stopped testing on animals many years ago. The SPF issue can easily be solved by selecting the variant which has the SPF 20 in it. Indeed this is recommended on the box to use this alternative on sunny days.
I would recommend this product to anyone who has dry skin especially if you are prone to skin sensitivity, or if like me you seek to avoid parabens wherever possible. It's also great for those in the maturing years categories.

This is a fantastic moisturiser especially if you suffer from dry or sensitive skin. I do and I have to say this cream has been a godsend! It is part of of the Avene thermal water range which uses water which has been filtered through the Cévennes Mountains absorbing precious minerals and trace elements for 40 years until it reaches the mouth of the Sainte-Odile spring. Its composition makes thermal water ideally suited for the care and management of sensitive skin. There have been many tests and studies conducted to support the claims made on this water. (This information was found on their website).
Well I don't really know about all that but I do know a good moisturiser when I try one.
This costs about £11 for 40ml, but a little goes a long way. I alternate this with another moisturiser as its quite intense. My first tube lasted about a month or so.
The packaging on this is quite basic. It is in a white tube, with orange and black lettering. It comes in a box which has lots of information printed on it and a detailed leaflet inside about the benefits of thermal water, which is quite interesting. I like the simplicity of the packaging. It looks expensive.
This cream glides on, is easily absorbed into the skin and has no smell whatsoever, which to me is a good thing.
Performance - This cream is fantastic and is really great for sensitive skin. It really works and has made a huge difference to dry patches on my face (particularly around the nose). If I was rating this would have a definite 10/10!!
I highly recommend this product.
I have tried many different skin care products, all claiming they were designed for sensitive skin and found them all to be irritating, within a few days or so, in one way or another.
This product has really impressed me, it is so natural and inoffensive to the skin I doubt it could harm even the very most sensitive of skin.
Reasonably priced, not cheap but not expensive either, this is the first moisturiser I have found to be pure good news for my face, I hope they never stop making it.
