Well it seems that it has already reached that time of year again where not only the nights are drawing in but my skin is drying out. My hands always suffer the most and if I do not act quickly with moisturiser then it's never long before my eczema begins to emerge. Noticing that my skin was already beginning to feel dry a few days ago I had a root around my toiletries for some moisturiser and came across a small tube of the Avon Far Away skin softener which I had received last Christmas as part of a gift set.
My tube of the Far Away skin softener contains 50ml and came as part of a gift set which also contained a tube of shower gel and bottle of eau de toilette. This skin softener can be purchased separately in a 150ml tube currently priced at £3.50 and can be purchased on the Avon website (www.avonshop.co.uk) or from an Avon representative.
The tube is made from Ivory coloured plastic and stands on its Pink screw tip cap and has a picture of a tassel on the front. Like I have found with many Avon products there is limited information on the tube itself as apart from the name on the front of the tube and ingredients listings on the back there is nothing else although I think the use is pretty self explanatory.
As this was just a small tube I decided to use it just on my hands rather than as a body skin softener to make it last a little long. The softener itself is white is colour and has a fairly thick consistency. My hands were rather dry when I began to use this skin softener a few days ago but are now feeling much softer and moisturised. I have only needed to use a small amount around the size of a 5 pence to give a good coverage over my hands. The softener absorbs well into my skin and does not leave it feeling at all greasy which is something I really do not like from some moisturises. Although I do find that I need to reapply this fairly frequently I have been impressed with the results and my hands have been left feeling much softer and my skin appears to look brighter. I have also had no adverse reaction to this moisturiser at all, even with my sensitive skin.
I was a little sceptical of the fragrance as although I use the eau de toilette in the same range I do find that the scent is quite strong and can be overpowering if more than a couple of sprays are used. But I am pleased to report that the fragrance of the skin softener is a little more subtle. You can still tell that it is part of the far away range as the scent is the same consisting of florals spiced with amber and musk but it is much lighter and is almost not noticeable a few minutes after it has been applied which I do not really mind as long as the moisturising aspects are working.
Overall I have been quite impressed with this skin softener it has made a real difference to my previously dry hands and has helped them to feel softer and smoother. The fragrance was much better than I anticipated and I would certainly purchase it myself or be happy to receive it again as a gift in the future.
Far Away Skin Softener
Normal price per 100mml = £2.33
Exotic essenses of rare florals spiced with amber and musk.
Used to be a cream coloured pot but has now changed. The product is a pot that is much larger than most creams. Its about the same size as a pack of multivitamin tablets. The pot is plain and the lid has the far away logo and brief info on the top. There are no recommendations or instructions from avon either online or when this item arrives. It does not come boxed up, just nice and simple sold as seen. Plus with being called a skin softener I suppose one doesn't need much instruction :-)
The cream is very thin, although not runny. Its very easy to use too much because it spreads out very well. The smell is very strong indeed, but very very nice. The product is rubbed into skin until gone and makes the skin instantly smooth.
I am very very pleased with this product, the smell lasts for ages and smells like a perfume. The cream doesn't leave skin sticky at all and is very easy to rub in, providing you don't use too much. I have sensitive skin and this product has never irritated my skin. To be honest I only really use this as a hand cream, the smell is so strong I think it would be a little heavy going to face cream. But if I ever get any dry skin patches anywhere I use this as it works instantly.
As this product doesn't need much cream to apply to large areas it lasts AGES and I mean ages. I've had mine for about a year and its only half way down.
I would rate this product:
Value for money - *****
Ease of Use - *****

Avon are well known for their affordable fragrance range, and Far Away is their No1 best selling perfume. This Skin Softener is a creamy body lotion and forms part of the Far Away bath and body range which includes several items all scented with the beautiful Far Away fragrance. This can be purchased via your local Avon sales representative or online at www.avonshop.co.uk
Far Away also happens to be my favourite Avon perfume. I was given a set as a gift and this included a shower gel and skin softener as well as the perfume. The Skin Softener is a rich body crème that comes in a screw-top plastic jar. The jar is not very practical as you have to stick your hand in the top and scoop the product out. The lotion sticks to the edges and can be a bit difficult to get out of the tub. The lotion itself is a milky white colour and manages to be thick yet runny at the same time.
Far Away is described simply as: "Escape the norm and get lost in a tantalising blend of exotic blooms and sandalwood. [Scent type:] Oriental, Sandalwood." The exotic tones of sandalwood, musk and florals work together well and develop as they settle onto your skin. It is very sexy and mysterious, with a sensual, musky tone to begin with. As the top notes fade off it becomes a little more subtle and the floral notes come through. I frequently get compliments on this perfume and it is easily recognisable by other Far Away fans, a lot of my friends also love this scent. The scent is the best thing about this lotion, as it lasts on the skin for hours after applying and builds up a longer lasting fragrance when layered with the other items as well.
The lotion is creamy and quite rich but also light enough to be able to use frequently. I don't use this all over as it only provides a medium amount of hydration, and I need something stronger for my problem dry areas. The lotion spreads easily and soaks in quickly. I particularly like to use this on my arms, shoulders and chest as this really allows the fragrance to be noticed. It also feels fabulous on freshly shaved legs and gives my skin a silky feeling.
This body lotion is good for daily use and can be applied frequently as required. I get a reasonably well-lasting level of moisture from applying daily, and my skin looks noticeably better and smoother afterwards. As mentioned above, I do use a richer body lotion or body butter for my patches of dry skin as this is more of a light soothing lotion. I normally apply this once or twice a day, as it is not long-lasting enough to provide a deep level of moisture.
This is an ok body lotion that gives an adequate amount of hydration, but will need to be applied daily to achieve the best results. The fragrance is lovely and it works very nicely when teamed with other products in the range. Apart from the awkward tub, this is a nice product and I would recommend it if you have normal skin that doesn't require too extra moisture.
If you like this then you may also enjoy other items in the Far Away range, including:
+ Far Away Eau de Parfum
+ Far Away Roll-On Anti-Perspirant Deodorant
+ Far Away Moisturising Bath and Shower Gel
+ Far Away Shimmering Body Powder
+ Far Away Perfumed Body Spray
And there is also the lovely and light summery fragrance, Far Away Dreams Eau de Parfum.
I just wrote a review on a shower gel that I got from Avon, from the Far Away perfume collection. I mentioned in the review that I had pruchased the whole collection for only £12, I know; what a bargain!
Well anyway, in that collection came this Far Away Skin Softener. Skin softener is exactly that - a cream that softens you skin. It is a sort of body lotion, moisturiser type cream that you are supposed to rub all over your body after drying with a towel, after having a bath or shower.
The skin softener comes in a strange little tub as shown in the picture provided. It is rather a strange shape and I'm not too keen on it actually. I think I would prefer it if it wasn't so weird looking to be honest and I'm not really sure where on earth Avon has got the idea for the design from as it does look a little bit crazy!
The normal price for this is £3.50 and there is 150ml in the tub. When I used this every day all over my body, it only lasted me about two or three weeks so I'm not sure this is very good value for money. However I have seen body lotions and moisturisers priced much more expensive than this one so it's up to you whether you think you would spend this much on it or not. Personally I don't think it is good value for money.
As this is part of the Far Away collection it is lightly fragranced with Far Away perfume. It does smell quite nice however I have smelled much nicer body lotions and moisturisers in my time so I wouldn't call this anything special.
I liked using this as part of the collection but I wouldn't use it on its own.
I wouldn't recommend this as I think there are much better similar products out there.
I bought this as a gift for my self as my favorite scent is the smell of far away by avon. I thought for sure that I would love this product. When it first arrived I put it up not wanting to use it till after the holidays as it was intended as a Christmas present for my self.
Because I put it up I forgot all about it till just the other day. When I pulled it down I was happy to see that the little pot was not damaged in any way and really did a great job of holding in the lotion/skin softener. The pot was very stylish and reall looked great on my vanity table. Too bad that was all that was to be good about this product.
When I opened the pot it did smell nice and very much like far away. How ever that was to be the only thing that was similar. I stuck my finger into the pot and pulled out a large glop of the stuff and put it on my hands and started to rub it in.
I can only compare the feeling of sticking my hands into a tub of cooking oil and rubbing that on as lotion. It seemed it was a very greasy product. I rubbed and rubbed it in trying for it to get into my skin completly. Needless to say it never did. I ended up wiping it off and then washing my hands 3 times to get it off.
I have to say that I am not happy with this product as it seems way to greasy and does not rub in well. I have very dry skin I need something that will actually soften my skin not make it extremly oily and gross to feel.
I would not recommend this to any one as it does not really soften as much as it makes you feel like your on an oil slick.
As noted in a previous review, at Christmas time, I received a lovely Avon gift set, from a friend who regularly buys gifts from this company. One of the three items in the Avon Far Away gift set was a skin softener.
Within the gift set of course, the three items were all of a smaller size and quantity, so my skin softener came as a 50ml tube, with a bright pink lid and cream body.
As I have already stated previously, I very much liked the smell of teh Avon Far Away shower gel and expected this to be similar. Unfortunately I tend to buy very plain skin care products myself due to my sensitive skin, however I thought I would give this a go.
According to the Avon website, this skin softener is a moisturiser that contains 'exotic essences of rare florals spiced with amber and musk'.
Like a lot of people, in this cold weather we are enduring, my hands have taken the brunt of it, despite me wearing gloves, and my hands although I tend to have oily skin have been rather dry in places recently. So this was a perfect time to try out this new skin softener.
The skin softener comes out as a white cream and is easy to spread. Although the smell is not overpowering, it does not smell like the Far Awar shower gel in any capacity. To me, it smells like a mixture of sun lotion and fragranced tanning milk - neither of which are a terrible smell, but just not what I expected.
I was disappointed that after several applications over the course of a week I have noticed no difference in the softeness of my skin, compared with using my trusty aqueous cream. I have found that when it is immediately put on, the skin does feel smootherand softer, but this does not last, which is not much use in this cold harsh weather.
All in all, I was very disappointed with thie skin softener, especially after being so taken with the Far Away Shower gel and particulary the lovely fragrance it has. This skin softener does not measure up at all in terms of scent or in terms of effectiveness, and is therefore not something that I would recommend you buy a whole bottle or tub of, as there are much ebtter skin softeners out there at very reasonable prices which do a lot better job.
One of my Christmas presents this year was a selection of Avon skin products, not the usual functional items I'd buy for myself but some of their more expensive items which my niece had parcelled up in a lovely basket. One thing I received that I couldn't wait to try was the Far Away Skin Softener as I'd been impressed with the corresponding shower gel and like the smell of the perfume itself when my sister wears it.
It comes in a lovely tub, different to the one pictured above and is quite retro in looks I think. It looks very nice on my bathroom shelf and stands out amongst the tubes and bottles that this kind of body lotion usually comes in.
While this is quite similar to the fragrance of the Far Away perfume, it doesn't have the strong oriental tones that the perfume relies heavily on. It's quite a floral smelling body lotion but has a hint of musk which isn't apparent in the Eau de Parfum spray. I love the fact that this skin softener smells the same while in the pot and also after I've applied it to my skin. I haven't got the perfume but think it would be very easy to layer your fragrance using the Far Away shower gel, skin softener and talc with a spritz of perfume to finish it off.
You have to scoop the skin softener from the pot using your fingers but because the rim of the pot is wide this is easy to do and you don't have to squeeze your fingers in and make a mess of the top of the pot when you try to extract them with the lotion on them.
The consistency is creamy, slightly thicker than a bottled body lotion but thinner than say a body yogurt or butter. It's very easy to apply to my body and rubs in well, I found it absorbed straight away into my skin and left me with no greasy residue at all. Providing you have time to rub it in properly then you'll be able to comfortably get dressed within a couple of minutes as it absorbs and dries so quickly.
I was sure this wouldn't prove to be a very moisturising or nourishing cream at all, I'm not sure why as I've been impressed with other skin softeners from Avon. Perhaps the overly perfumed aroma of it made me associate it with a more drying product, but really it's very moisturising and left my skin feeling soft and supple. The results don't last all day and within I'd say three hours I have to either reapply this skin softener or put on a longer lasting body lotion or cream, however this isn't too bad in my opinion for a reasonably priced product such as this.
The skin softener doesn't irritate my skin as I thought it might because it's so highly perfumed, I had a reaction to the Treselle Skin Softener from the same range so was a little concerned about trying this one the first time. I am pleased to report that it didn't cause any itching or redness whatsoever and certainly not the broken skin that some perfumed body products can bring on with my strange skin.
This skin softener costs £3.50 usually for a 150ml tub, although is currently on special offer at £1.75 which is an absolute bargain for such a lovely perfumed body lotion.
When it comes to the purchase of body moisturisers I have the best of intentions every time I end up purchasing one. I own too many and tend to use them once or twice (at a push!) and that's it especially in this cold, winter weather. I find it traumatic enough to take a bath or shower and get out of said bath or shower to be greeted with cold air and when that happens I'm really not in the mood to stand about slithering cold creams on to my body. Because of this I do try to use a decent and moisturising shower gel or bath products to try look after my skin but in all honesty although I'd love silky, smooth skin I have my limitations and using freezing cold stuff on my naked body in a house where my Mother is too tight to put on any heating half the time....well....that is one of them! I'd rather be super scaly in all honesty!
So I never set out to buy another body moisturiser to join all the others which are currently shoved on the top shelf of my wardrobe. Already I own 9 large and fullish bottles of the stuff and I've kept them because they cost me a fortune and are all really good one's!
All that happened with this is that my Avon lady came round. I didn't want anything but I like my rep, Anita so I decided I needed to place a small order but was at a loss of anything to buy and in the end decided to get this as a little stocking filler for my Mum for Christmas. Anita (my rep) brought it around and dropped it off when I was out and Mum being Mum of course looked in the bag to see what I'd got. When I got in she asked me how come I'd bought this set and I said I fancied it to try and cover up it was for her and she said oh thank god thought you'd bought that cheap rubbish for me for Christmas for a minute!
Yep I was a bit upset really but I do know my Mum and really.... I should have known better! My Mum is a woman who isn't a fancy pants woman like me! She's a clean and tidy person don't get me wrong but she isn't someone who spends hours and hours in the bathroom, uses body lotion or uses face moisturiser or anything like that. If you bought her Lush you'd get a lecture about it. She likes what she likes and she has a couple of very expensive designer fragrances and they are for best wear. She doesn't wear perfume every day or anything! She is a nightmare to buy for is my Mum. So I was left with a box of Far Away Perfume, Shower Gel and Skin Softener all in small/travel/mini sizes in a a very nice box thinking I don't know anyone to give these to. On a positive note though that soon rectified itself. I did know someone...Me!
Personally although I'm not keen on Avon products I have always loved little sets of things and I have a pamper bag of stuff I use to simply have a pamper night with and not particulary for using for dates or big nights out or anything but stuff I can use and smell nice with just because it's nice to and makes me feel good about myself! This product, I had no intention of using on a night out after I did wear the Far Away perfume (from this set) for a Friday night out at the casino with my mate when she questioned if I was wearing Avon stuff she remembered from years ago. There I was in a little black dress and loads of bling and I felt exposed and a cheap skate to be perfectly honest with you and it knocked my confidence big time as I felt exposed! She never said it was awful or owt but I was right put off it! I did however forget though not to wear Far Away products out again!
Well mine is a white bottom opening, recyclable plastic tube in a 50ml size with a bright pink screw on/off lid. As I have said already it came in a set in a gift box with the Eau De Perfume which is 15ml in size and the shower gel which is the same size as this all for £5.00. On the front of my tube there is a picture of a tassel at the top and then under that in small black writing I'm told it's Far Away, Skin Softener and some stuff in foreign languages I don't understand. On the back I'm told more stuff in foreign language/s, ingredients are listed, size is stated, the recycle symbol is shown and finally contact details for Avon are given. This is really nice, handy sized packaging I think! The usual pot is a light pink colour with a gold screw on/off lid and in a 150ml size and at normal price will cost you £3.50 a tub but having said that this is quite often on offer!
Well I have used this with the shower gel and the perfume and I have used this alone so I'll start by saying that if I layer the scent it does become very strong indeed. Long lasting and distinctive for me it's far too bold and in your face. Using this with other products like a perfume of your choice etc is quite difficult as well because it's so strong it overpowers everything else you use! So for me this is one to use alone or be very careful what your using along side this product or use it with other products from this range to layer the scent.
The cream is a brilliant white colour and of course mine is in a squeezy tube but if you buy it in a tub then of course no squeezing required! It isn't a really thick cream but certainly isn't a drippy formula and it has a nice easy to handle formula about it. Now the fragrance of this is beautiful. I prefer the smell of this as a cream to the other products available in the range as it does have a more gentle creaminess aroma to it than the other products. For me smell wise this with the shower gel is enough and ideal for hot summer nights.. well it would be if it wasn't for... actually I'll come back to that cos I'm talking about the smell! lol
The smell to me is Oriental, floral and very heavy although very well blended and I feel this is more so than the perfume and/or shower gel. The fragrance is listed to contain Jasmine, Freesia, Osmanthus Flower, Orange Flower, Peach Sandalwood, Vanilla, Musk and Vanilla and yes I'd agree with Avon on this list of contained ingredients. The more I sniff at this lotion the more I can smell all of these things with a big dollop or cream and a lot of sweet making this womanly in fragrance rather than a young persons fragrance.
To use this product is very simple. Gently brush on a small amount onto clean, dry skin. I use a small amount as a little of this goes a very long way indeed and I gently brush it over my body. I't spreads easily but...
It doesn't absorb really. Even with a small amount. I feel like I've rubbed it in (can't see the white lotion anymore) and then I give it a few minutes to dry. Then I give it another few minutes to dry. Skin feels rather wet and greasy still. It Simply doesn't dry. I used this and got dressed. Went out to a club (I decided to go out last minute and had used this and the shower gel and perfume) and I could feel it on my skin when I touched my neck and arms and stuff through the course of the evening and my hands felt a bit greasy. My hair at the back of my neck clinged to where this lotion had been applied making my hair feel a bit greasy too and hair kept sticking to my neck making me look like I was sweating and I wasn't! Humidity makes this worse as well. As the evening went on the room got hotter, I felt like I was looking greasier as time went on! My skin felt hydrated fair play, I did feel a little greasy and I'm sure I looked it and the only bonus was that the oils never transferred to my clothes (I was wearing very dark clothes though!) but I felt...well....damp and slimy and not all that fresh though could really smell it all!
As I say my skin felt hydrated and smooth and I didn't feel sticky just a bit kind of grubby and I knew after 4 hours of wearing this product it wasn't' going to suddenly 'set' for me. The smell was very strong and the heat warmed up the fragrance further but for me I found that a bit embarrassing really as it was so in your face and I was in a modern, trendy club stinking the place out with Avon!
Great I think for more mature women than I. It's just quite old fashioned and not all that classy although I like the fragrance well enough it just isn't really me. It washed off my body easily enough although it was without a doubt oily and my skin felt unnaturally soft with this on but when rinsed off I did feel smoother! I'd say this is great on dry skins and if you love this fragrance this must be a must by... but me? No thanks very much! lol
Only available from Avon.
