Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel
Advantages: Moisturises, soothes sunburn and after shaving, smells fresh, cools skin
Disadvantages: Can't lock the pump bottle so can't take it in luggage, full price is a bit expensive
When I was in Boots last week I saw that the large 453g bottle of this Banana Boat aloe vera gel was half price, making it £4.99 instead of £9.99 so I decided to snap this up.
This aloe vera gel really is quite a multi purpose product. I have had it before and used it as an after sun lotion to cool and soothe sunburn. That is actually mainly what I intended it for this time too - not that I have sunburn in our current weather but I will be working at a kids' camp in Austria for two weeks later in the summer and I have sometimes got a bit of sunburn there in the past from being outside so much in the heat.
Unfortunately, the one thing that lets this product down is the fact that when you release the pump by pulling it up and twisting it, it seems to be impossible to lock it again, so I won't be able to put this bottle in my luggage as the contents would end up pumping out everywhere! If I want to take it with me as an after sun I'm going to have to buy the small bottle with the screw cap. It was a bit annoying when I realised this. I do like the pump bottle generally, as it is quick and easy to dispense the product. As the bottle is clear, you can see the green gel and easily tell how much is inside.
Since I have opened it I thought I would just have to put it to use at home. Aloe vera gel has been recommended to me in the past as a good product to use after shaving, to cool and moisturise the skin and prevent any irritation from occuring and keep the skin smooth, rather than getting any red bumps. The lotion is lovely to use for this and feels really nice and refreshing on the skin.
On the bottle it is also suggested that you can just use it as a general moisturiser. They even say it is suitable for use on the face, but I personally I am sticking to hands and body as I am more particular about what goes on my face. As a moisturiser it feels different to most, as it is clearly a gel rather than cream or lotion. Actually when I first pump it out the texture of it reminds me of a disinfectant or something, but obviously without any alcohol and it does not dry out the skin - in fact the opposite. When you squirt it out it feels quite thin and liquidy, hitting you with a fresh blast of the aloe vera scent. It is easy to rub this all over wherever you want it. It feels a little bit greasy when it first goes on, but is quickly absorbed, occasionally leaving a slight tacky feeling on my skin if I put too much on, but that doesn't last too long. It doesn't leave the skin feeling particularly smoothed or softened, but it does moisturise well.
I got a really good amount of product for my money on the half price deal. I think the full price of £9.99 is a bit expensive, especially if I end up just using it as a moisturiser, as I have plenty of other cheaper body moisturisers. It is a good price for an after sun though. I will definitely look out for offers on this again next time I need to buy a bottle.
Summary: A handy little gel which can be used in different ways
