I have always been slightly reluctant to use face masks in the past as my skin is somewhat unpredictable. When my skin was going through a good phase, I was worried to use a face mask in case it caused my skin to breakout and when it was going through a bad phase I didn't want to use one in case I made the situation worse. However recently my skin has settled down a bit (about time, I've only been waiting 15 years or so!) and so I thought I would give a face mask a go to see if it could improve the overall quality of my skin.
While shopping in my local chemist I saw an 150ml Apricot Peel Off Facial Mask for £1.95 and quickly decided to buy it without even looking at it. I hardly ever concentrate on what I am buying from my local chemist as there are always people loitering in there either waiting for their prescription or waiting for everyone to leave so they can ask for whatever it is they want without having an audience! I actually thought it was a St Ives product when I bought it, I think because St Ives is famous for using Apricots in their products but it is actually made by a company called Beauty Formulas.
I had never heard of the company Beauty Formulas before, but looking on the internet I have found they have their own website.
Beauty Formulas began in 1984, are an international company and are based in Leeds. You can buy products from their website, but they don't seem to have very much choice and they don't seem to sell the face mask (typical!). You can buy the face mask from internet shops and it seems to be of a similar price to what I paid and it is probably sold in a number of local chemists.
The packaging is pretty simple and to be honest it looks a bit cheap. The face mask comes in a large white squeezy tube with a flip top lid and is very easy to use even when your fingers are sticky from the mask. Across the front of the squeezy tube it says Apricot Peel Off Facial Mask in big black letters, above the product name it says Beauty Formulas and below the product name is an illustration of Apricots. Below the Apricots we are told that this is a relaxing and deep cleansing mask which is suitable for all skin types. We are also told that it removes impurities, regenerates and gives your skin an improved glow and texture. That seems like a lot of promises for £1.95!
On the back of the tube we are told this product contains fruit extracts and anti oxidants to help draw the impurities out of your skin. The directions for use are pretty simple, all you do is apply to your face, leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then peel off. I am a bit surprised they don't tell you how often you should use it, but I assume this means it must be quite a mild product and you can use it as often as you like (within reason!)
When you first squeeze some of the mask onto your fingers you will see that it is completely clear, thick and not very runny. It has a strong smell of Apricots and plastic which I find quite horrible however when the product dries you can not smell it anymore and even before it dries you get used to the smell. I probably need about 4 biggish blobs to give my face a thick covering and although the product is sticky it is very easy to spread over the face. I would say that it takes about 15 minutes to dry completely and when it is dry your skin doesn't feel uncomfortable at all unless you have got it on your lips in which case they feel really weird and pinched.
When I first used it I put it on before I went to bed and thought I could stay awake for half an hour, but I couldn't and when I woke up the next morning I still had the mask on, it hadn't flaked or peeled at all and in fact I was impressed with how thick it looked (the mask not me!). As I peeled it off the mask came away in one piece and I could see that it had taken away a fine layer of dry skin that I didn't even know I had on my face! As I looked at my skin I felt it looked brighter and clearer and when I touched it I found it was much softer than usual and my skin felt very normal with no tightness. I gave my face a wash and then started to put my foundation on and it definitely went on much smoother and I found that I probably used less of it as it seemed to glide over my skin.
I have now used the mask three times (leaving it on at night as it worked so well the first time) and each time it has produced impressive results. One problem I have found with this mask, is that the morning and day after I use it my skin is ever so slightly greasier. This isn't a huge issue for me as I just use extra powder and I imagine it maybe because I leave the mask on at night, maybe my skin needs a chance to breathe, so next time I might stick to the recommended time limit.
Overall I am very impressed with this face mask and I would highly recommend it. I feel it is very economical, I have used it 3 times and believe there might be enough left for about 6 or 7 applications which is seriously good value for money. It has also improved the quality of my skin and although I believe these results are temporary for £1.95 I could keep buying the product and using it regularly with no problem. It wont fix any serious skin problems, but if you find your skin is in need of a pick me up this is an excellent product to try.
