This has been a staple in my facial skincare routine for a while. Its always my go to product and after trying many other toners I always revert back to this one. For the benefit of this review my skintype is combination, it does get very oily and am prone to some acne however using certain products also brings up dry patches.
What is it?
Boots essentials cucumber facial toner. It costs around £1.50 which is a bargain.
It smells slightly of cucumber but is not overpowering.
A toner can be used as the stage of facial cleansing just before you moisturise and after you have cleansed to ensure your skin is completely clean and makeup and dirt free.
Does it work?
This toner is very refreshing. It doesnt just feel like your wiping water on your face like some toners do, but them it does feel like too much product. Its very gentle and doesnt irritate my skin. I have found some toners give me breakouts but this has not. It leaves my skin feeling totally clean and removes any last traces of make up i may have missed whilst cleansing. It also helps soothe any redness on my skin and doesnt leave my face feeling dry or tight.
For the price this toner is well worth a try. Its very refreshing and soothing and helps leave skin feeling clean. Its not drying or irritating or oily. Just a plain and simple toner that does exactly what it needs to.
When No7 changed their branding and stopped producing certain items I was really disappointed that the toner was one of them. I feel my skin doesn't feel fresh or clean without using a toner so I was keen to find a replacement. I tried quite a view different brands including some of the more expensive ones. Unfortunately, quite a few didn't suit my skin and caused a reaction. Blotchy red skin was not the look I wanted
I came across this product as I wandered down the aisles in Boots one day and remembered I had used it as a teenager and had been happy with it at the time. As soon as I started using it again my skin felt fresh and clean. I have had very few blemishes or spots since and really feel it's doing it's job!!
Anyone who likes good value and fresh clean skin should try this toner!
I have sensitive skin and just love this cucumber toner from boots which they say is for all skin types. I have used it now for about 2 years.
There is no stinging or red rash which I tend to get from a lot of other toners, the smell is really fresh, I soak cotton pads with it and store in a plastic container for ease and one bottle which last me nearly one month is a bargain at £1.50 Boots often do a three for two offer which works out even better value. I also use it just to freshen up when hot. I think any one with sensitive skin should just try it once I don't think you will be disappointed .I would and have recommend this to friends and family I have also got my husband to try it and he says that it leaves his skin fresh and clean feeling.
I could never wash my face and then just leave it - I really do feel the need to use a facial toner every time. I find using a toner rids my skin of any small impurities that cannot be seen with the naked eye. One of the better cheaper facial toners I have used is Boots Essential Cucumber Toner. This 150ml bottle only cost £1.50 and it lasts for ages.
I have paid a fortune for toners in the past and a lot of them have been either too hash for my skin (and drying) or they are just way over the top price-wise. This Cucumber toner from Boots is mild and gentle and yet it has the ability to clean all the impurities off my skin at the same time. It feels light and refreshing to use, it doesn't sting my skin at all or dry it out so that it feels tight and it never leaves any tacky residue behind, as some toners can do.
I use this toner by lifting back the lid and gently dropping out the contents onto a medium sized cotton wool ball. There is a small hole in the top, which allows me to dispense exactly the right amount of toner I need and so ensuring that none goes to waste. It also means that if I accidentally knock the bottle over (as I do, every now and again) that the contents won't all splash out and usually only a small dribble escapes, instead.
The toner really does remover all those last traces of make up that my facial wash just cannot manage to reach. I pay special care around the sides of my nose and the top of my chin (where my greasy bits are) and the cotton wool ball usually shows up a slight dark area, where the last remnants of dirt have been removed from my skin.
The smell of this toner is lovely and fresh and very subtle and not too perfumed. I hate it when facial products are too heavily perfumed. This is light and gentle on my skin and causes me no adverse reaction at all. It is suitable for every day use and fine for even the most sensitive of skins.
It's certainly a high quality product and priced very reasonably.
I have only started using facial toners in the past two years and that is only because the first signs of old age have started to lurk.
As I have never been one to spend loads of money on products, this Boots Essential Cucumer toner seemed a good one to try. And I am glad I did. I use it mainly to remove traces of make up after using face wipes and face wash and just before moisturising and have found it to be perfect for my needs.
When I first bought this product I was slightly worried that the cucumber scent would be too overwhelming and I would start smelling like a salad, but I find it just right. It has a slight scent when using it but it is not a scent that lingers on my skin.
The toner is a liquid and I use a cotton pad for applciation. I only tend to use one pad with about 7 drops of toner on it and this does the trick for me. But saying that, I don't use an awful lot of make up so some may need more. I tend to use it on my neck too, which is more as a freshner than its toner purposes.
As the liquid is very light, it absorbs into my skin very quickly and so there is no lasting shiny effect which some toners have. I use it twice a day and it helps to keep my skin moisturised and healthy looking.
For £1.50 a bottle, its brilliant! I tend to buy a few bottles at a time (one for gym bag, one for travel bag, one for home) and this lasts me a good three to four months.
I love the smell of cucumber in face and beauty products, I think its so fresh and fragrant smelling and smells really clean and sweet to me. Boots do a really nice range of cucumber products in their essentials range so they are cheap but effective and have that gorgeous cucumber smell. One of the products I have used for a while now is their cucumber facial toner. I have used Clinique toner in the past but as we have been tightening our belt of late I really couldn't justify paying over £20 for a toner when I can get one on the hight street for just £1.50. Its such a good price and you get 150ml so it does last quite a while too.
I had read some reviews on here about this toner and actually went looking for it in Boots and have been pleased with what it does for my face. Boots say that their Essentials Cucumber Facial Toner, which is enriched with soothing cucumber and vitamins, refreshes and tones the skin, removing the last traces of make -up and excess oils.
The toner comes in quite a basic packaging with the essentials logo. The bottle is a light green with a dark green flip cap lid. There little hole in the top is fairly small so I find this ensures that you don't soak your cotton pad in liquid but rather add just enough toner to use on your whole face. I take all my make up off before I use this and see the toner as the final cleaner for my face before I go to bed. Then I apply it to a flat cotton pad , getting most of the pad wet and then smooth it all over my face. It's a really nice sensation as it makes my skin feel just really nice and clean and as if I have a fresh base to go to sleep with and then start again in the morning. It doesn't sting as much as some facial toners I have used and I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. Sometimes I think the sting I got from, for example the Clinique toner, really helped to work and clean my skin deep down, perhaps keeping it firmer and actually helping it in the long run and is perhaps a bit more medicated than this one. However, I still get a nice clean feeling and its good to know all my make up has come off.
It is suitable for all skin types and I would agree with that as I find it fairly mild. For a nice toner that cleans your skin I would recommend this for the price and nice smell.
I have recently started using the Boots Essentials Cucumber skincare range. The reason for this is that I simply could not afford my previous range from The Body Shop anymore. This is a budget range from Boots as it is own branded, and I was not expecting big things from it. However, I have dabbled with many of the products in the range and been pleasantly surprised with it. One of this miracle products is the facial toner which I absolutely love.
I must start out by saying that I have never really been big on skincare until recently. Because of being on a budget, I used to use make up wipes to remove make up, and then give my face a good wash. Since converting to the Boots Cucumber range, I have taken a serious skincare regime up, including cleansing, toning, moisturising etc... This is why I would recommend this range as it is effective as well as affordable even for those on extremely low incomes such as myself.
This facial toner only cost me £1.42 which is so cheap when you compare it to other toners available out there. I was previously paying around ten times more for something that did practically the same job. The price is the thing that really stood out to me, and you receive more than fantastic value for money with this toner. Many other products in the range are also around the same price, meaning you can often afford to try out the whole range. This is obviously only available in Boots and online on their website, as it is an own branded product.
It comes in a pretty uninteresting and dull bottle, but when you are paying such a small price it is expected. You get 150ml in the bottle which I think is a good size, and lasts a good couple of months or so if used twice daily. The reason I picked this up is because I like to use toner after I have cleansed my skin. I recommend using the cleanser from the range beforehand. Toner essentially clears out any make up left after cleansing, as well as excess oils. As my skin is quite oily and full of pores, I find that this is why I particularly like toner, and as I wear a good covering of make up on a daily basis, this is effective for me.
To use this, you simply have to open up the lid and pour out the toner on to some cotton wool. I find it easier and more effective to use the cotton pads, as it soaks into those better. The toner is very wet in consistency and pours out quickly, so you have to watch out. You don't need much, and I tend to fill up around half of the pad. You then have to just rub all over your face with a firm grip. I like to focus on my T zone as this is where I get quite oily and big pores, and those hard to reach areas which brings out make up and dirt from under the skin which you may have missed with cleansing. I like to also apply this to my neck just to clean thoroughly. It is really easy to use, and takes a matter of seconds just to make such a big difference to your skin.
Immediately as it is applied to the skin, it has a lovely, cooling feel and really refreshing for the skin. It certainly helps to bring out dirt and make up from under my skin which is fantastic, and due to this I have noticed that I now have much less blemishes and spots appearing. The best thing about toner is that you can see the results on the pad, and it shows that it is working to clear out under your skin. I love the cucumber scent as it is so fresh, and I am amazed that it is as good as previous toners which I have used which cost a lot more.
I will now never turn back to my old toners, and I certainly will never pay more for a toner when you can get fantastic results from Boots for just £1.42, how can you say no? I have noticed a considerable change in my skin since carrying out this skin routine. I do use this toner in the morning and of the night before bed after I have cleansed and removed all make up. It is really effective for those who often wear make up, and I would really recommend trying this out.
Overall, this is one of the best toners I have ever used, and I certainly will be sticking to this from now on. Do not let yourself be a skincare snob, because sometimes the budget brands really can work miracles. This toner is my holy grail now, and I would recommend it completely to everyone. Not one bad thing to say about this product. Thanks for reading and hope it helps.
In my opinion, there should be one cleanser and one toner on the market, and they should be reasonably priced as well! This is the one for me, I love Boots own range of skin care, they do what they say they will and don't charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege. I use this toner (and the cleanser) twice daily. It is delicate but effective. After a nice exfoliation I like to apply a few drops to a cotton pad and gently massage my face with it. It is really soothing and makes me feel so fresh! It's not harsh and it doesn't dry out your skin either, like most of toners can do, and I genuinely feel that this product helps to keep my complexion in check which is, after all, the reason we all buy skin care products! So, the main benefit aside, any more? Yes, the smell, a refreshing cucumer scent, not to over powering but a lovely calming scent. Secondly, the price, at £1.99 it's a bargain, with most others costing £4.99+ (and giving you half as much!) and last time I bought this product, it was 3 for 2 on boots skin care range, an even better bargain! Honestly, ditch the big brand name products and give this a go, it's well worth it.
A long while back my Dad got me a 3-step facial cleaning set by Clinique from duty free at the airport and the 'step 2' clarifying lotion was amazing. I used it after cleansing to remove all the excess dirt and oil for a real deep clean. I used it every day and when it ran out, I went to the Boots to replace it - until I saw the price. As a student I just couldn't justify spending £15 on a product like this.
I moved swiftly away from the Clinique counter and towards the regular skincare section. As a fan of the Boots Essential Cucumber range - I use their face wipes and eye gel - I looked there first. It made sense to have skin care products all by the same range as they're designed to work together. They had a selection of cleansers, but the one that caught my eye was the facial toner - £1.42 at the time for 150ml - bargain! I definitely wanted to stick to a liquid I can apply with cotton wool as opposed to a scrub I have to apply and rinse off; that's just a bit too much effort for me especially as I don't have a sink very close to my bedroom. And the facial toner had the exact same directions as the Clinique lotion I knew and loved. I ended up opening the bottle to give it a sniff and it had the familiar smell of alcohol that Clinique has, but not overwhelming and an undertone of that really fresh cucumber smell. The alcohol smell in the boots facial toner is because alcohol is the second ingredient on the list, after water. Clinique lists alcohol as its first ingredient and it's a little unpleasant if you get a whiff of it which actually gives the Boots version an edge for me. I have sensitive skin and sometimes the Clinique lotion leaves me a bit red and burning.
So I ended up convinced and with the mentality that if it was no good, I'd only wasted £1.42. It turns out, I hadn't wasted my money. My evening routine is take of make-up with a face wipe, apply toner/clarifier with cotton wool and moisturise with boots own brand night cream. After taking off my make-up as usual I used my new Boots toner and it was great. Obviously I could tell it wasn't Clinique, but I think it did the job just as well. It got off all last remaining traces of make-up and left me feeling very fresh-faced. Even though my face was visibly clean before toning, the cotton wool came away grey! It gave a slight stinging, but not at all uncomfortable, it just made me feel clean. It's not at all greasy which I love - it's not soapy or anything so no oily residue.
Weather you've used expensive toners in the past or not, invest in this amazingly cheap little bottle! It will save you a fortune and last for months while giving excellent results.
I invested in the Boots Essentials Cucumber range last year- as they are cheap and cheerful and just about the right size to pop into your luggage to take on your hols and then use up/ throw away whilst you are there.
I used the Essentials Cucumber Facial Cleaner first, rubbing into my skin using a circular motion and then removing with a cotton pad. After this, I used the Boots Essentials Cumber Facial Toner. I squeezed some of the toner on to a cotton pad, being careful not to over load it and also at the same time ensuring I have enough on there! I then wipe it across my skin to remove any excess dirt or cleanser that hasn't already been removed. I have found this process quite refreshing.
The toner is enriched with soothing cucumber and vitamins to gently refresh and tone the skin. It does have a subtle pleasant smell- I can't quite put my finger on it- possibly its the smell of cucumber although I didn't realise cumcumber had any smell!
After use, I have found a gentle tightening of the skin as the toner dries on the face- it is not unpleasant at all, although sometimes it does leave a slight sticky feeling. Thus in general, I am not a huge fan of following any cleanser/toner routine- I always like to have some fresh water on my face so it feels really truly clean.
At £1.42 (even after the VAT increase) for 150ml you can't really complain at the cost of it. If you are on a budget then definitely go for this. It doesn't look anything pretty in the bottle- you are not paying for the packaging- but it does the job for a reasonable price.
I recently reviewed the Boots Essentials make up remover and today I am reviewing the facial toner in the same range of Boots Essentials range, it, at the time I bought this one I was torn between this one and one that was fragrance free and so I bought them both because they were so low in price and since I use tons of beauty products because I am a junkie with cleansing products and always have since I first started doing my cleansing routine as a teenager.
This one comes in a plastic bottle with a flip lid, the toner is quite thin in consistency and the texture is quite smooth, it has a nice mild fragrance to this one and in my opinion although it is a Cucumber fragrance, the smell of Cucumbers is not too over powering but the liquid is so cooling on the skin. It feels very refreshing and I just pour a little onto a cotton pad and wipe it gently over my face, avoiding contact with my eyes and it closes the pores on my face and it does kind of feel tingly but that feeling is so pleasant on my face and I quite like it because I then know it is working. The tingling is does not last very long, a few minutes at the very most.
This one was priced at only £1.39 for 150ml and it is exclusive to Boots, the amount in the bottle does last a long time because only a small amount is needed to work on the skin, the quality is a very good one, it is extremely good value for the low price and I find that this one is suitable for my dry skin because the Cucumber is a natural ingredient. It is suitable for all skin types and it tells me on the bottle it is Dermalogically tested.
The bottle looks fairly attractive for the price and for a shops own brand and I think although it is very basic with just writing on the front, the bottle looks nice on a dresser if that is where you place your beauty products. I place most of mine in baskets as I have that many and do not like clutter but I think it would look super left on any dresser etc or the bathroom.
I really like the bottle size with this one because it is a nice size, some bottles can be quite large and too big to hold for my liking sometimes but this one is a nice one to hold and pour the contents onto my cotton pads. I think this is a nice mild toner for the skin and it is not harsh and I have had no irritation and my skin has feel so clean and fresh after using it, I highly recommend this one for anyone to buy and if you are thinking of toning for the first time and want to try a cheaper one to see how it works for your skin, I would suggest this one as it is so affordable for a first time and if you do not like how it feels on your skin, you then have not wasted so much money.
I give this one 5 stars.
Thank you for reading my review.
This toner retails at £1.39 in boots and is surprisingly good for the money. This is the only toner I have ever used as I feel it does what I need it to.
I actually use it after removing my eye make-up to remove any traces of cream on my eyes and to remove my foundation. It does this well. It is quite good for removing excess oil from your face in the morning or the evening. I always use a cotton pad. This is suitable for wiping over eyes too as I found it didn't sting mine. I usually wash my face afterwards.
I have sensitive skin and I was a little worried about using this at first. It smells like cucumber but when applied to the skin it has a cooling affect. There are other products in the range too that are worth checking out. Boots sometimes do a 3 for 2 offer on this range.
I bought this in Boots as I've been impressed by some of the other products in the Essentials range, particularly the moisturiser. I have quite oily skin and like the extra-clean feeling you can only get from a toner, but at the same time I don't want to spend loads on a fancy name and packaging, so I thought I'd give this a try. It's exclusive to Boots and retails for £1.39 for 150ml, which is a similar price to the other products in the Essentials Cucumber range - bargain!
The packaging is very simple: it's a translucent clear bottle with a pale green plastic cap which flips up and just has a small hole to dispense just the right amount at a time. It has a clear label on the front and back with all the basic information typed on it including the name of the product, 'for all skin types', and on the back, the usage instructions and ingredients. It is very minimal packaging but doesn't look cheap and nasty: it's still OK to keep on your bathroom shelf! The main ingredient after water is alcohol, which doesn't sound great for your skin but is the active ingredient in most toners and is probably what gives you that lovely squeaky-clean feelinfg...
As instructed, I used this after cleansing my face at night: I squeezed this out onto a cotton wool ball and wiped it all over my face, concentrating on the T-zone, where my skin is oiliest. The texture is like water so you do need to use something quite absorbent otherwise it would run and dribble everywhere. Cotton wool is easiest but I guess you could also use a tissue. It definitely smells of cucumber and it's quite a fresh, natural smell rather than a chemical approximation. It feels nice and cool on the skin and dries quickly. As it dried, I could feel my skin tightening slightly, but not uncomfortably, and it did leave my face feeling really clean with no residue of dirt, oil or excess cleanser. I woke up the next morning with a still-clean face which wasn't greasy (this is an improvement for me!)
I'm not sure whether it's just a mental thing but using this regularly just makes me feel cleaner and less grotty at the end of the day. It's lovely to use on hot days just to freshen up and I think my skin has been clearer since using it. It doesn't dry my skin out though and leaves it soft and easy to use makeup on. I'm very impressed with this product and at this price you can't go wrong - I'll definitely be using this again.
